Toni Collette is phenomenal as Muriel, an unattractive, emotionally repressed young woman whose life revolves around Abba and getting married. She lives in Porpoise Spit with her severely dysfunctional family when she decides to leave and pursue her dream. Marriage represents the ultimate success and happiness, but through the course of the film we see Muriel profoundly mature from a naive introvert into a strong woman, shaking off her need for marriage as a form of acceptance.

Toni Collette stars as Muriel, a social outcast who dreams of getting married. Unfortunately, no one has ever wanted to date Muriel, let alone marry her. One day she hears about a foreign swimming sensation in danger of deportation back to his home country unless he can find a wife. Muriel signs up for this duty and prepares herself for the day she has wanted for her entire life to arrive. Collette gives a decent, goofy performance as Muriel, and the soundtrack is comprised of ABBA songs, giving the film a light, fluffy feel.

William Faulkner(187-16) was born in Mississippi, near Oxford, were his family moved when he was five. His great-grandfather had been somewhat of a local legend after becoming a colonel in the Civil War. His heritage is a great influence in his literary works.

William Faulkner’s short story “A Rose for Emily” shows Fualkner’s concern for the destruction of the South, as represented within the destruction of the whole town, including Ms. Emily. Ms. Emily had been “a tradition, a duty, and a care,” when she was alive. From the beginning of the story the reader finds out she has just died and she is a “fallen monument.” A person to be revered. As the plot develops thru the narrator, whom many consider to be the town, we learn that Ms. Emily had not been allowed to have any male friends because her father was over protective of his daughter. When is young she is thin and wearing virginal white, while standing behind her father’s menacing presence. After her father dies she denies he is dead and refuses to turn over the body for three days. Afterwards, she begins dating a Yankee, Homer Barron, and the town can feel sorry for her. She can not date a Yankee she is of Southern heritage. Homer disappears and the town feels as if Emily will remain single until she dies. She dies and the town discovers Homer Barron in the upstairs bedroom. He had be dead for over forty years. Beside his body a long strand of iron gray hair is found. Ms. Emily had kept her love after all.

Faulkner uses images of realism, the gothic and reflection to convey his story thru the narrator. “She looked bloated, like a body long submerged in motionless water, and of that palid hue. Her eyes, lost in the fatty ridges of her face, looked like two small pieces of coal pressed into a lump of dough...” (170) LaDonna said this was extreme realism but Dr. White said it went beyond that almost to the grotesque.

Ms. Emily was framed in the window more than once during the story. “When we saw her again, her hair was cut short, making her look like a girl, with a vague resemblance to those angels in colored church windows-sort of tragic and serene.”(17) LaDonna said this was a hint of the sublime.

After the realization that Ms. Emily had poisoned Homer so she could have in death what she never was able to have in life because of her fathers overbearing personality, we began the discussion.

Question Can “A Rose for Miss Emily be viewed as a Romantic work?

Comments David said that Faulkner had taken a Poe type stance and used the gothic to represent decay literally and figuratively in the Old South.

Kellye said that the story showed the people of the Old South not wanting the let go of the past and Jennifer added that was why the town tolerated the caprices of Ms. Emily.

We discussed light and dark imagery and the “desire and loss” element embedded in the fabric of the story.

Because the narrator chooses to skip around regarding the memories of Ms. Emily and does not go in a chronological order, the class had a discussion on the fact that Ms. Emily had actually been lying beside Homer in her twilight years. We concluded this was probably the case.

Lynda asked if anything is ever said about the statement that Homer likes to go drinking with young men, and other teachers agreed that is an issue that arises every time we are teaching the story to a group of high school children..

What is the significance of the title? We did not come to a conclusion about that issue. Some scholars have mentioned the imagery in the upstairs bedroom is full of rosy colors, suggesting that Emily has her rose in Homer’s death. Other students thought the title suggests a tribute to Ms. Emily by the town which is so resistant in letting go of the past.

Finally, Al pointed out the correspondence between the house and Emily, comparing it to “The Minister’s Black Veil,” where everyone wants to know what is behind the veil, just as everyone wants to know what is in Emily’s house. Al also discussed the image of Emily silhouetted as an “idol,” which seemed to signal something primitive and pagan, contrasted to the image of Emily as an angel.

How do I love thee? Let me count the ways

Writing can be an expression of one’s innermost feelings and a great way to release emotions from one’s heart and soul. A sonnet, a fourteen-lined poem and a formal arrangement of rhymes, gives an author a way of self expression. Elizabeth Moulton Barrett Browning’s Sonnet 4 from “Sonnets from the Portuguese” is a great example of how a poet releases emotions through writing. Even though love cannot be measured in numbers, Elizabeth uses this sonnet to try to express the depth of her love for Robert Browning. Romance is one of the most popular themes of poetry. Love can inspire the most soulful and sorrowful of words because of the intensity of the emotion.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s “Sonnets from the Portuguese” first appeared in an 1850 collection. The title came from her husband’s pet name for her, “Portuguese.” “Sonnets from the Portuguese” describe the intense emotions Elizabeth has for Robert, even though she feels somewhat undeserving of his love. Elizabeth had to keep her feelings to herself for so many years and this poetry allowed her some release. Sonnet 4 of the “Sonnets from the Portuguese” is one of Elizabeths most famous poems. Elizabeth finds it difficult to put one kind of measurement or barrier on how much she loves Robert. It is a never ending, infinite love. This love contains every emotion imaginable and grows constantly, even beyond her time here on Earth.

Sonnet 4 is written in Petrarchan (Italian) sonnet form. The sonnet consists of fourteen lines written in iambic pentameter. The Italian or Petrarchan sonnet is composed of an octave (eight lines) with the rhyme scheme abbaabba, followed by a sestet (six lines) in which the rhyme scheme is cdcdcd. The last six lines can also be cdecde. The octave presents the question “How do I love thee?” and makes a proposition “Let me count the ways.” The sestet resolves the tension created by the octave by generalizing, answering or applying the proposition (she will love him after they die).

By use of metaphors, the audience learns that Elizabeth compares her depth of love for Robert to such things as a soldier fighting for freedom. Poetically, Elizabeth says, I love thee freely, as men strive for Right/I love thee purely, as they turn from Praise. Her love for Robert is relentless and with great purpose. She believes in true love having no limits, the heart and soul having no restraints, not even death. Elizabeth also alludes to the fact that we must always strive to fight for our love and keep it strong. We must not take love for granted. Elizabeth associates romantic love with common decency and virtues. This is important in her writing because it shows the passion that Elizabeth has in her heart.

Elizabeth lets the reader picture the vastness of her love for Robert through imagery. She uses such words as “life,” “death,” “sun,” and “candlelight” to show her love for Robert. Life and death describe how she will love Robert on earth and after they die. Sun and candlelight are used to make the reader think of how she will love Robert during the day and at night. By using those words, she conveys her love of Robert through imagery.

Elizabeth Barrett Browning was born on March 6, 1806 in Durham, England. She was the oldest of twelve children of an autocratic father. Elizabeth began writing at a very young age, publishing her first works while in her teens. From an early age, Elizabeth suffered a chronic lung ailment. She spent most of her time in a darkened room writing poetry and many letters. The famous English poet Robert Browning admired her Poems (1844) so much that he wrote to her. They fell in love through their letters and secretly married in 1846, despite her father’s objections. Soon after their marriage, they ran away to Florence, Italy, where Elizabeth began a remarkable physical recovery. In 184, they had a son, Robert Wiedeman Barrett Browning. She increasingly took up contemporary issues including the Italian Nationalist cause, the abolition of slavery in the United States, and the position of women in Victorian society. Elizabeth died on June , 1861.

The character, Huckleberry Finn, in the novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn”, and Tom Sawyer from the same novel are two characters that have manifest similarities and differences. The similar elements include that they both like adventure, they are both open minded, and also they do not want to be civilized. The different elements include that Tom is a leader over Huck, Huck is more serious than Tom, and also that Huck keeps things simpler than Tom.

Both of these characters have many palpable similarities. To begin, Huckleberry Finn, and Tom Sawyer both decide to form and join a group of Robbers, that go around town look for adventure and terrorizing people. For example Tom starts the band of robbers, Now, well start this band of robbers and call it Tom Sawyers Gang. Everybody that wants to join has got to take an oath, and write his name in blood. (Twain ), and then Huck joins in and they all go on adventures for destruction. One other very acknowledgeable similarity that Huck and Tom Have are that they are both open-minded. For instance whenever Tom and Huck wanted to set Jim free, “THE first time I catched Tom private I asked him what was his idea, time of the evasion? -- what it was hed planned to do if the evasion worked all right and he managed to set a nigger free…” (Twain 86), this shows that Tom and Huck have there own feelings about certain things and are open-minded about things that they were told not to do, as in to hate “niggers”. The last most essential similarity between Huck and Tom, are that they do not want to be civilized. Tom and Huck display this when they are in the Band of Robbers. Huck and Tom go into the Band because they want to be different than everyone else and not follow any of the rules that the adults have imposed on them. For example when Huck wanted to do something for the gang he said to kill Mrs. Watson, “Well, nobody could think of anything to do -- everybody was stumped, and set still. I was most ready to cry; but all at once I thought of a way, and so I offered them Miss Watson -- they could kill her.” (Twain 11). The gang was not going to kill Mrs. Watson, but this just goes to show how far they were would have gone to be uncivilized.

Even thought both of these characters have many similarities, they exhibit many differences as well. One difference between Huck and Tom is Tom leads over Huck. There are many instances were Tom is a leader over Huck, but one example of this is when Huck is in the Band of Robbers and Tom controls everything going on. The gang voted Tom the leader, “…we elected Tom Sawyer first captain and Jo Harper second captain of the Gang, and so started home.” (Twain 1), therefore Huck has to follow under the leadership of Tom Sawyer. In addition to these differences, Huck is more serious than Tom. You identify this, when the gang goes and does some of there destructive acts. Tom tells the gang that there are a group of people coming in with treasure and that the gang was going to jump them and take all their treasure. Huck finds out that there is no group of people coming in with treasure. It is just a family picnic. Huck then tells Tom exactly what he feels,

[“…there warnt no camels nor no elephants. It warnt anything but a Sunday-school picnic, and only a primer-class at that. We busted it up, and chased the children up the hollow; but we never got anything but some doughnuts and jam, though Ben Rogers got a rag doll, and Jo Harper got a hymn-book and a tract; and then the teacher charged in, and made us drop everything and cut. I didnt see no dimonds, and I told Tom Sawyer so.”] (Twain 17). Finally another difference between these two characters is that Huck keeps things simpler than Tom. Through out the novel Tom always wants to do wild and complex thing, for example dig under Jim’s Bed, “Tom said we was right behind Jims bed now, and wed dig in under it…” (Twain 6).

In conclusion, both characters have perceptible similarities to both being adventurous, open-minded, and imaginative. They also demonstrate differences that Tom leads over Huck, Huck is more serious than Tom, and Huck is more serious than Tom. These similarities and differences in Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn give the novel “The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn” a very individual appeal.

In 184 the federal government passed the Federal Uniform Drinking Age Act, there has been a lot of controversy as to whether the government has a right to create such legislation. (Berg 1) This law was passed to encourage each state to change their legal drinking age to twenty-one years of age. Congress believed that if they raised the minimum drinking age that it would save a significant number of lives. They figured that a twenty- one-year-old person was more mature than the average eighteen year-old. That, in my opinion, was a huge mistake. Just because a person lives to be twenty-one does not determine how mature they are. There are many teenagers in the world that are considerably more mature than the average twenty-one year-old. The legal drinking age in the United States should be lowered from twenty-one to eighteen years of age.

Setting the legal age to purchase and consume alcohol is unrealistic in today?s way of life. Prohibiting the sale of alcohol to people under the age of twenty-one may cause habits such as binge drinking and alcohol abuse. It just causes a rebellion. Keeping the age at twenty-one makes it seem as if an eighteen year-old is not a real adult. Drinking is then viewed as a glamorous activity since it is only for adults. Then, in rebellion, those who are underage will just find a way around it. For example, many have fake identification cards, steal alcohol from their parents? liquor cabinets, or even put another person in jeopardy by asking someone whom is twenty-one to illegally purchase the alcohol for the underage drinkers. This kind of deceitful attitude does not encourage responsible drinking habits. In addition, this gives young individuals the urge to drink even more when they get older so that they could make up for their so ?called lost time, hence causing alcoholism. An examination conducted at East Carolina University, students indicated, ?it might be easier to hide a little pot in my room than a six pack of beer?. (Hanson ) This is the attitude that congress is teaching today?s young people to have.

?Children in European countries such as France, Spain, and Portugal are taught appropriate drinking behavior because no drinking taboo exists in their society. In these countries, despite higher rates of alcohol consumption, there are lower incidences of alcohol abuse?. (Berg 1) As a matter of a fact the United States has the highest legal drinking age in the world, many countries have no minimum drinking age. (?Legal Drinking??1) The reason these countries policies on drinking work so well is because at an early age they start educating the young people which I think is something the United States should consider.

The determination of legality in drinking should not be age, but rather maturity and ability to handle responsibility. The twenty-one restrictions seem out of date in today?s society. Many parents of today?s teenagers were legally allowed to drink at the age eighteen. Today?s teenagers face more responsibility and are treated much differently from the way their parents were treated. If twenty-one is considered so mature, then why are eighteen year-olds considered adults? At the age of eighteen, an individual can vote, serve on a jury, stay out without a curfew, leave home, drive, smoke, buy weapons, engage in financial contracts, start a family, be sent to adult prison, join the military, and die for this country. (Park ) I f an eighteen year-old can be held to so many responsibilities, and then it seems unfair to say that they are not old enough to drink. At eighteen, a person can even have a closed container of alcohol in their possession, but they cannot drink it. That is absurd! ?An examination of East Carolina University students? intentions regarding their behavior following passage of the twenty-one year-old drinking law revealed that only six percent intended to stop drinking, seventy percent planned to change their drinking location, twenty-one percent expected to use false or borrowed identification to obtain alcohol, and twenty-two percent just intended to do other drugs?. (Hanson ) The other drugs these students are doing probably have worse side effects than alcohol.

Write your Changing the Legal Drinking Age research paper

It has been said that with the law remaining at twenty-one it helps to prevent needless deaths from driving under the influence. As numerous studies have shown, one of the biggest killers of young teenagers is drunk driving. (Neveau 1) This is evidence to me that is only proof that the twenty-one year-old drinking laws are not working. I feel by that by lowering the drinking age to eighteen these young people can sit down in a controlled environment like a pub or bar and legally consume alcohol without having to drive around and hide from people, putting other person?s lives in jeopardy. It has also been said that, the earlier a person begins using alcohol, the greater the risk of current and adult drug use. (?Booze News? ) If in the educational system young people were taught more on the effects of what drugs and alcohol could do to a person?s development maybe they would stop using as many drugs.

In conclusion, the legal drinking age in the United States should be lowered from twenty-one to eighteen years of age. People have provided congress with sufficient evidence on why the legal drinking age should be lowered; yet they refuse to take into consideration that they should speak for the people instead of their selves. I for one feel being able to drink should be based on the person?s level of maturity instead of their age. I for one feel that at the age of eighteen I was responsible enough to consume alcohol but still I was refused the chance to. It is upsetting to know that if I were married at the age of twenty I could not legally toast with champagne at the reception.

Time

Can you ever image not worrying about time? I could not. I live off time, everything I do is based on time such as my work and school schedule. I work and study a total of 10 hours. Some other parts of the world dont use time as we do in the United States, such as some parts of Africa. Europeans lifestyles depend neatly on time, unlike countries like Africa. Africans in Africa at most time do not take time seriously. In Africa they dont use time, if something happens its because it was meant to happen. The Europeans and Africans have different sense of time.

In the European worldview, time exists outside man, exists objectively, and has measurable and linear characteristics (16). The European feels himself to be times slave, dependent on it, subject to it (16). Europeans use time daily such as work and school schedule and when we go to the doctors, we have a set time for the appointment.

To exist and function he must observe its ironclad, inviolate laws, its inflexible principles and rules. He must heed deadlines, dates, days, and hours. He moves within the rigors of time and cannot exist outside them. They impose upon him their requirements and quotas. An unresolved conflict exists between man and time, and that always end with mans defeat time annihilates him (16).

Write your Time research paper

We Europeans depend on time. When we tell someone Ill pick you up in a half a hour, or meet you in two hours at Dennys for dinner, we expect them to be there and on time. We base our days on time. We always look at clocks making sure what time it is, just in case we run late.

On the other hand, Africans have a totally different sense of time then Europeans. Africans apprehend time differently (16). For them, it is a much looser concept, more open, elastic, subjective (16). Africans time is more of an easy going attitude, but they are not lazy. It is man who influence time, its shape, course, and rhythm (man acting, of course, with the consent of gods and ancestors) (16). For Africans time is different, they dont depend on time like Europeans. When something happens in Africa its because it was meet to happen. Not because there was a set time for it to happen. Time is even somethings that man can create outright, for time is made manifest through events, and whether an event takes place or not depends, after all, on man alone (16). Africans dont base there days on time. When Africans go to work if they are late, it does not matter as long as they get there work done. Africans work very hard to get there jobs done, but they just dont worry about the exact time as the Europeans.

Time appear as a result of our actions, and vanishes when we neglect to ignore it (17). How do you think the Europeans would react of they had to live like the Africans, I personally would be lost, I base my whole day on time, I wish there was more than 4 hours in a day. The Europeans and Africans have a different sense of time. They both have there own beliefs of time.

In poetry of the Seventeenth Century, many different views can be discovered about time and death. Perceptions of time and death have been symbolized throughout history. Often they can be categorized with the same meaning. Time and death has been given different personas such as good or evil. Poets, John Donne and George Herbert can be among the most well known authors that characterized time and death. In Donne’s “Holy Sonnet 10”, he directly approaches Death. In Herbert’s, “Time” he also addresses death, but calls it time. From two very different prospectives, Donne and Herbert both directly address death and its effect on civilization dealing with God and eternal life.

In John Donne’s “Holy Sonnet 10”, Donne approaches Death with an aggressive approach, using a serious and yet belittling tone. The opening of the poem, “Death, be not proud…for thou art not so;” (1-) shows his challenge to Death’s authority and power. He goes on to tell Death, “those whom thou think’st thou dost overthrow/ Die not, poor Death nor yet canst thou kill me.” (-4) Donne condemns and challenges Death’s power over human beings. Donne explains his bravery to Death by expressing that if Death is like sleep than he would be better off still. When he goes on to say, “From rest and sleep, which but thy pictures be, / Much pleasure,”(5-6) he tries to express that rest and sleep are images of Death and makes dying appear to be something that is wonderful. If they are pleasing, it shows that Death itself must be more enjoyable, When Donne continues, “And soonest our best men with thee do go, / Rest of their bones, and soul’s delivery,” he explains that Death has an advantage over sleep, which is the ability to discharge our souls from earth.

Donne continues in his poem by implying that Death is a “slave to fate, chance, kings, and desperate men,” () and this conveys his opinion that like these things that Death doesn’t have power over, he doesn’t have power over us either. Death cannot gather up our souls unless you allow him to. Donne depicts Death as a scavenger who “dost with poison, war, and sickness dwell,” (10) because Death must wait for these things to do something before he can do his job. He then criticizes Death by saying, “and poppy or charms can make us sleep as well, / And better than thy stroke; why swell’st thou now?” (11-1). This further explains the comparing between Death and sleep stating that there are other ways to sleep besides dying. He better explains himself stating that Death is “One short sleep past, we wake eternally,” (1) which expresses that the sleep of Death is short lived compared to eternal life. Finally, Donne explains what becomes of Death once it has taken our life. He says, “And Death shall be no more; Death, thou shalt die.” (14) which explains the fact that once Death carries us to eternal sleep, it is made useless and will die. Donne has rebuked Death’s pride and has reduced Death to a short nap before eternity. He also does not welcome Death, but in “Time” by George Herbert, he, does.

George Herbert’s poem “Time” has a smoother tone in dealing with the symbols of death and time. Herbert speaks about a meeting with Time, which gives a more gentle relationship between the poet and its subject. In his first encounter with “Time”, Herbert states, “Slack thing…thy scythe is dull; whet it for shame” (1-). This explains his disappointment with the dull scythe. Time desires this when Herbert continues to explain “No marvel, sir, he did reply, / If it at length deserve some blame;/ But where one man would have me grind it, / Twenty for one too sharp do find it,” (-6). This basically expresses that most people don’t want Time’s reaping scythe to be sharp. Herbert further expresses himself saying, “Perhaps some of old did pass, / Who above all things loved this life;/ To whom the scythe a hatchet was, / Which now is but a pruning knife” (7-10). He is trying to convey that at one time for some people Time’s scythe, which is death, was excruciating and deadly. But now he explains that the scythe helps our souls to grow. He justifies this change by Time and its scythe stating, “Christ’s coming hath made man thy debtor, / Since by cutting he grows better” (11-1). He refers to how Christ died on the cross to save our souls. Since Christ has sacrificed himself for us, death is just a stage that we have to go through in order to get to Heaven. He compares Time and the death to a gardener who prunes his wards to help them grow stronger.

Herbert continues talking about time explaining its change. Using the lines, “for where thou only wert before/ An executioner at best,” “Thou art gardener now, and more, / An usher to convey our souls/ Beyond the utmost stars and poles,” (14-18) he illustrates how Time is a road through life into death, journeying further to eternal life. Through death, Time now acts as a guide to God. Herbert explains how Time moves at a slow pace when one is aware of the eternal happiness of heaven. He says, “And this is that makes life so long, / While it detains us from our God.” (1-0) He goes on to say, “Who wants the place where God doth dwell/ Partakes already half a hell,” (-4) expressing that earth is a part of hell. Time finally replies by saying, “This man deludes/ What do I here before his door? / He doth not crave less time, but more,” (-0) expressing that although Time is like a gardener planting our way to salvation, humans search for more time in life. Despite the truth that life is just a waiting place to get to heaven, humans still have the wishes to live. Time expresses, “this man deludes,” (8), saying that as humans we delude ourselves with desires for long life, when in reality death is freedom to get to God.

Both poets have the same aspect of death, which is freedom, and portray life as being like a waiting place for eternity. They both look forward to death, and view life as a penalty. Herbert depicts life as “a rod” () while Donne describes death as freedom. Although there are connections, the poets insights on Time and Death are not alike. Donne is more hostile while Herbert is friendlier about it. Donne never gives Death a chance to respond, making Death appear vulnerable. Herbert allows Time to respond by singling out man’s limitations. Basically, Donne hates Death for what it has become while Herbert loves Time for what it has become. They both explain the connection between death and humanity. They also see death as a vehicle to eternal life.

HOW ARE ADVERTS DESIGNED TO ATTRACT A TARGET AUDIENCE?

This essay will show that adverts use a variety of methods to attract a targeted audience. I will tell you how a character, slogan, logo, copy, trademark, layout, colour, motive, image connotation and image denotation all work together to create an effect.

Characters are people or a person on the advert. The purpose is to attract the eye of audience and to make more realistic because their hoping that the audience will look at the character first but it depend on the advert. In my advert the character gives numerous impressions that she is sexy, feminine, and authoritative lady and that will attracts men by the way she look and will attracts the women because the advert is selling perfume and most of the women desire to be like her because of the image she gives and creates in the advert witch is that she can get any men she want.

Order Custom media paper

Colour is one of the first think the audience notices in the advert like if you see loads of bright colours in an advert the target audience will be younger people then older. It creates an image alongside with the character for the advert to make target audience. In my perfume advert the colours were red and black, this created an image of love and feeling sexy. This will make the audience think they will have more love and feeling sexy. And in my ellesse advert the colours were Red, Orange, Blue and white. This creates an image of strong, manly and a sentiment of sporty. And this advert makes the audience consider they will more maleness.

The slogan is the catchphrase where as the brand is the name of the product. It is incredible the audience can reflect of the character and colour. In my advert the slogan is “ a rose by another name” and brand name is “red” this made the audience think that the character is a rose so why couldn’t they be the same. The slogan for the ellesse is the “art of sport” the audience will consider that if they want to me a sports start when it beginnings with ellese.

Trademark is the name of the company that produces the product and logo is the symbol used for the product the purpose, of trademark and the logo is for the audience to know who made the artefact the trademark and logo are tow roses so audience know the company is red many people look at the band name if they were to by something e.g. ellesse

The layout is how the text or picture arranged on the advert and the font is how the words used make the audience felt and this is another way the advert. They create image because they are of apart of adverts that is notices and works with the rest. In my advert the layout was the lady at the top and product is beneath if. Font in the advert makes the audience feel sexy.

Audience is who the product is aimed at. Is important to give to them. Adverts have different audiences; in my advert the audience was intended at young and single ladies or ladies in love or looking for love because they will consider it will help their love life.

In conclusion, I have show that in advertising people use characters, slogans, logos, copy’s, trademarks, layouts, image denotations to get the attention of the audience as well as creating an image for the product. Every advert tells the audience something different and has its own style. All of those mentioned above have an effect on the reader’s opinions and shopping habits.

I have had my work experience in a design warehouse. It looked like a big house with loads of widows. Was I expected to use apple Mac computers but in fact I got more then I expected. I learn many things and how working people act and I gained insights into the warehouse. I hope to go back to this firm when I leave school or I hope to do this kind of work when I am older. They offered me job but only when I have A-levels. They have said they will pay for my university. I hope to get more knowledge in I.T and how working people behave.

I was worried about fitting in on my first day. I arrived on time to give a good impression. In the job I was the youngest person and a trainee but they did not care. I had to be confident again. I understood the instructions and if I did not understand them they explained again I was not embarrassed.

I enjoy working with Sarah one of my colleagues. she was a nice person she work there for three year. Most of the people who work there work there for more then three year. But There was a girl on work experience that I got on will with she was my age and now were good friends her name is Hanna. And the only person that I did not like was the embroidery manager called jenny. She always picketed on me.

On my first day I went to reception where the manager took me to his office. The manager was a big man that looks like he was 8 and he was wearing a suit. I had to wait. They have a meeting every Monday morning. For the first day I was in the design department where I helped the designer design an Internet site for the firm that was colourful with lodes of picture. I learned more about computers than. I have in any lesson. We worked until 1.00 o’clock then we had a two-hour break. Then we worked and finished at 05.00 o’clock.

I hoped that it would be good but on the first day it was not as I hoped it would be. As the days went by work got better and better. I worked in the designing department for the first -days and I was in printing for days, in the embroidery department and in the backing department. I was hoping to be in the design department more but instead I was in the backing and embroidery.

My three days in the backing department was a good experience. I leaned how a group of people work together without a teacher. My three days embroidery I worked on 6 machines at one time and on the first day I did over 00 hats. My two-days in printing was not as good as I expected but it was all right. Designing was better.

I think I worked to the best of my ability. And if I had to do that all over again I would like to have more time on the computer and in the backing. I think I chose the right job placement because I dressed correctly, was on time and I was confident. On every Friday they paid me £5. It came to £50. They gave me a bag full of different things they designed. This work has inspired me to work hard at school so that I get good A-levels then I will be accepted into this firm for a permanent position. A good report was all I wanted and two meet new people.

Should Ecstasy be legalized?

Psychoactive drugs require different policies for individual substances based on their danger potential, the severity of danger, and the patterns of usage. Certain drugs create a potentially higher risk of loss of self control. The experiences and possible prolonged effects of ecstasy, even after discontinuation of use, are cause for strict regulation prohibiting the use, possession and distribution of ecstasy.

Some psychoactive drugs are legal such as alcohol and tobacco, despite the medical dangers associated with prolonged use. This is partially due to the fact that they are not only considered socially acceptable, but the risks are also significantly miniscule in comparison to other psychoactive substances. Recently there has also been attention diverted to the legalization of marijuana, whose risks are also considerably minor, and it also contains the capacity to greatly benefit the medicinal society for various reasons. Any activity that diminishes normal capacity for self control can create dangers for those who engage in it and for those around them. Drugs that threaten self control either through intoxication or addiction, are therefore matters of social as well as personal concern (www.fas.org). Taking into consideration this ideology, drugs should be classified as legal of illegal based on the extent to which lack of self control and the inherent dangers associated with the drug, be they physical or psychological, are present.

MDMA, more commonly referred to as ecstasy, has potential risk of detrimental long and short term effects on frequent users. Users may sometimes experience confusion, disorientation, anxiety, panic attacks, depression, insomnia, depersonalization, derealization, perceptual disorders, and hallucinations, paranoia, and psychotic phenomena. It is possible that some of these affects may continue for a period after cessation of the drug (www.ecstasy.org). Many consumers of ecstasy are often unaware of the exact compound of what they are purchasing, and quite often the drug is not sold in a pure MDMA form. There have been countless reports in both North America, and more frequently Europe, of ecstasy related deaths. Extended use of the drug has also been linked to the development of Parkinson’s disease. Based on the vast amount of potential danger associated with the use of ecstasy, it is clear that this drug should not be legalized under any circumstances as it poses as a great risk to the safety of an individual.

Ecstasy is currently considered an illicit drug under Canadian legislation, as it should be. However, as with any other drug, prohibition does not entirely eliminate the use and distribution of ecstasy. Efforts need to be increased in providing awareness for users of the risks involved in ecstasy use. Pill testing is one way of ensuring that users are at least confident that what they are consuming is a safe MDMA compound, and not comprised of other substances that may result in fatality or an overdose. Such projects are underway in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Spain and Switzerland. Although only the Dutch embrace pill testing and other harm reduction measures for ecstasy as part of official drug policy (www.alternet.org).

The two companies I chose for this assignment were Ford Motor Company and Bridgestone/Firestone Americas Holding, Inc. Despite the fact that the two companies operate in different industries, they complement each other very well. The reason why I chose Ford Motor Company was because they are thought of as leaders in their industry for total quality management. The minute I decided to use Ford Motor Company as one of my companies, the Firestone tire recall of August 000 was the first thing that popped into my head. Because the recall made such a huge impact on Ford Motor Company and individual consumers, I felt that it would be a perfect company to use to demonstrate the aspects of poor total quality management versus superb total quality management and how that affects not only individual consumers but also business consumers.

Ford Motor Company began a manufacturing revolution with its mass production assembly lines in the early 100s. Now the company is firmly entrenched in the status quo as the worlds largest pickup truck maker and the # producer of cars and trucks, behind General Motors. It makes vehicles with such brands as Aston Martin, Ford, Jaguar, Lincoln, Mercury, and Volvo. Among its biggest successes are the Ford Taurus and F-Series pickup. Ford owns a controlling % stake in Mazda and has purchased BMWs Land Rover SUV operations. The finance subsidiary, Ford Motor Credit, is the U.S.s #1 auto finance company. It also owns Hertz, the worlds #1 car-rental firm.

Bridgestone/Firestone Americas Holding, Inc., the North American subsidiary of Bridgestone Corporation, makes Bridgestone, Firestone, Dayton, and private-brand tires for cars, trucks, motorcycles, tractors, and earthmoving machinery. They also make air springs, roofing materials, synthetic rubber, and industrial fibers and textiles. The company is trying to regain traction after recalling 6.5 million of Firestone ATX, ATX II, and ATX Wilderness tires, primarily the ones on Ford Motor Company’s Ford Explorer, due to the allegations that the tires fell apart at highway speeds. This recall ended Bridgestone/Firestone Americas Holding, Inc.’s 5-year relationship with Ford Motor Company.

There are several differences between the manufacturing processes, corporate culture, and the performance results of Ford Motor Company and Bridgestone/Firestone Americas Holding, Inc. that distinguishes one as a quality company and the other as one of the opposite. Ford concentrates more on the elimination of waste, prevention, and continuous improvement versus Bridgestone/Firestone’s attitude of tolerance of waste, inspection, and fire fighting. Ford’s rebuilding strategy has an explicit focus on improving quality and building on work in progress to improve quality in their design, sourcing, and production processes. They are using 6-Sigma processes to identify and resolve quality issues in their manufacturing and business processes. This is an extensive quality improvement initiative designed to reduce variability and improve efficiency. One way of enhancing their current manufacturing processes and reducing variability in their systems is through the new Ford “Quality is Job1” 00 standard. Since its inception, Ford Q1 certification recognizes supplier facilities and organizations whose quality systems meet stringent prerequisites. It builds on existing requirements and stresses continual improvement, consistent metrics, manufacturing discipline, variability reduction and customer satisfaction. These Joint supplier/Ford 6-Sigma projects are producing improvements in both customer satisfaction and waste elimination.

Custom Essays on Ford vs. Firestone

Bridgestone/Firestone Americas Holding, Inc., however, is doing the complete opposite of Ford. Instead of using its efforts to eliminate waste and strive for continuous improvement, Bridgestone/Firestone is tolerating waste and confronting problems only as they occur. According to USA TODAY, there is evidence that the tire company did, in fact, recognize a problem well before the recall. The Bridgestone/Firestone documents showed that it tracked ATX tread-peeling problems since 14. The ATX tires accounted for 4% of property-damage and personal-injury claims among light-truck tires in 14, up from just 1% in 1 (Healey, 000). Eventually, the ATX tires accounted for more than half of the companys light-truck-tire claims. In spite of all that, the company decided to increase the production of the ATX tires so that its prominence in the claims didnt raise a flag. Even though the executives and managers across the company knew about the consumer claims for reimbursement for damage caused by peeling treads, it didnt trigger alarm bells because the industry uses warranty claims to measure tire performance. On top of that, eight former employees of Bridgestone/Firestone confessed that they used out-of-date rubber stock for their tires; that radial coils were exposed to high humidity from a lack of air conditioning, making it more likely that corrosion would occur on the brass-coated steel in the steel-belted radial tires; and that final inspections were done too quickly. According to the Washington Post, some Decatur employees would engage in practices, such as puncturing bubbles on tires, to cover up flaws on products that should have been scrapped (Grimaldi, 000). As a result, Bridgestone/Firestone didn’t confront the tire problems until it was too late. It wasn’t until people’s lives were lost did they recall 6.5 million tires.

In addition to the manufacturing process differences, there is also a difference in corporate culture between the two companies. Ford Motor Company presents itself as an extremely customer-driven company whereas Bridgestone/Firestone is more company-driven. Ford focuses on measuring customer satisfaction in many ways, including surveying customers about the appeal of their products, their satisfaction with the sales and service experience and the quality of the product throughout the customer’s ownership. Studies are done as early as 0 days and as long as four to five years after purchase. These studies enable Ford to build future vehicles to the customers’ specifications. Ford also tracks the percentage of first-time and repeat customers each year. Ford Brand sales and service satisfaction continues to improve every month and, so far, both measures are indicating an all-time high.

Bridgestone/Firestone, on the other hand, focuses more on productivity and financial results rather than the customers. The Firestone plant in Decatur, Illinois that manufactured many of the 6.5 million tires recalled was rife with quality control problems, with workers using questionable tactics to speed production and managers giving short shrift to inspections. In order to meet stringent quotas, inspections of finished tires were for 0-0 seconds or often virtually nonexistent. A retired Bridgestone/Firestone employee, Joe Roundtree, stated, “If you got behind on the lines, some of the tires would pass without being inspected” (Grimaldi, 000). Employees also had powerful financial incentives to release botched tires to the motoring public. Quality was definitely being sacrificed for quantity.

On top of that, there is also a distinct difference in the value placed on employees between the two companies. Ford, who operates in a leadership style, realized that in order to be successful in any business, their core assets, their employees, must be taken care of and valued as an important part of the company. So to show part of their appreciation to their employees, Ford has established some programs and strategies that help better the lives of their employees. They have created a program that enhances worklife integration through the Family Service and Learning Centers. More than 00,000 active employees, retirees and their families will benefit from childcare, before- and after-school programs, teen programs and adult and family education classes. A volunteer support network also will allow families to contribute to their communities. With regards to stress, Ford formed a program that made significant efforts to address job-related stress and workload issues. Ford remained committed to the process of feedback, action planning, communication, and management initiatives to reduce levels of stress throughout the year. In addition to employee stress reduction, Ford has also established accountability for health and safety performance. They measure health and safety performance according to several standard indicators including lost time injuries and severity rates. They use indicators of their capacity to manage health and safety effectively to prevent accidents and improve continuously. Through the Ford Production System, they conduct periodic safety and health audits of the management systems and procedures globally.

Besides taking care of the employees, Ford has also empowered its employees by letting them be a part of the company through communication and decision-making. They communicate with their employees through email, intranet and television broadcasts. The managers use a cascading process to share and discuss key decisions and initiatives with all of their employees. They work closely with union leaders to identify and address issues of concern to their hourly workers. They also recognize the need to go beyond communication to true engagement by providing means and opportunities for employees to contribute their views before important choices are made. A process of this type already is in place in Europe where Ford has well-established arrangements for consulting with employee representatives on a wide variety of matters including restructuring.

Bridgestone/Firestone, however, doesn’t seem to place significant value on their employees. They operate in a more management style in which they treat their employees as mere workers and not valuable assets. The workers at a Bridgestone/Firestone plant in Decatur, Illinois were on strike during the time many of the 6.5 million tires recalled were made. Labor discord flared at Decatur after Bridgestone/Firestone demanded concessions from the union in 14, including a move from 8-hour work shifts to rotating, 1-hour, day-and-night shifts. When the union struck, the company hired lower-wage replacement workers. The union eventually capitulated in 15, and union members began returning at reduced pay to work 1-hour shifts alongside replacement workers. Besides the long work shifts and low pay, Bridgestone/Firestone employees also worked in poor working conditions where there were high humidity and no air conditioning. Employee empowerment was also unheard of at Bridgestone/Firestone. Employees felt intimidated by management. The intimidation was so overwhelming that the employees felt that they had to do whatever to meet production quotas, even if it meant producing poor quality tires. Rather than encouraging input from their employees, Bridgestone/Firestone management told the employees what to do and how to do it. There is evidence that suggests that the 10’s labor dispute and poor working conditions at the Decatur, IL plant contributed to the production of the many defective tires

As a result, because of Ford’s superb total quality management, the ,500 6-Sigma projects that they undertook in 001 resulted in customer satisfaction improvements in many vehicle lines and $5 million in cost savings. A recent study done by the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration showed that not only did Ford have fewer safety recalls than its major competitors, but significantly fewer vehicles were affected. In addition, employee satisfaction is slowly improving. Compared to global blue-chip companies that employ at least 10,000 employees, Ford’s favorable ratings continue to exceed similar manufacturing companies, including many of their competitors, by an average of nearly seven percentage points.

Bridgestone/Firestone, on the other hand, suffered tremendously from their poor total quality management. Because of the poor quality of the tires, 148 lives were lost and 55 people have been injured. In addition, they had to spend $750 million in direct costs for the recall and on legal settlements. They also ended up sabotaging a 5-year supplier relationship with Ford, one of their biggest consumers, and they lost confidence from their individual consumers as well. Things had gotten so bad that the company’s own public relations agency, Fleishman-Hillard, had to dropped them. A recent CNN.com poll asked, “Would you ever buy a Firestone product again?” More than 6% answered “No” (CNNMONEY, 000). According to Rod Lache, automobile industry analyst at Deutsche Banc Alex, the Firestone brand is damaged beyond repair.

In conclusion, it is obvious here on how important it is to have total quality management in every aspect of your business. Even though implementing a total quality management system is expensive and seeing results is a slow process, in the long run, it is extremely profitable. Ford is an example of how patience is rewarded in the long run with quality products and high customer satisfaction. It was too bad, however, that Bridgestone/Firestone had to learn this the hard way. They had to learn that in order to satisfy external customers, they had to satisfy their internal customers, their employees, and their internal processes. However, by the time they found this out, it was too late. Because of their neglect and out-dated management style, the Firestone brand is forever damaged in they eyes of their consumers.

This is a book simply about Cal Ripken, Jr.’s, life. It tells about his childhood, where he grew up, his family, and his love for baseball as a kid. The author talks about Cal’s baseball career as a little leaguer and in his High School career. He lists the places Cal, Sr., managed and the places Cal, Jr., played. The book also mentioned Cal’s big league career and the records he holds in it. The author even talks about Cal’s experience as the Rookie of the Year in 18 and the Major League’s MVP in 18. This book really got into detail about his life.

Cal Ripken, Jr., was just an ordinary kid who loved the game of baseball and loved to compete. He grew up in a household of four kids. His mother’s name was Vi Ripken. He loved his mother and he had great respect for her. She Mainly took care of the four kids. His dad was on road a lot. His dad was the manager of the Oriole’s minor league team through all of Cal’s childhood, so he learned a lot about the game of baseball and went to a lot of his dad’s games. Cal had a very close relationship with his dad. Even though they didn’t see much of each other when Cal was a kid, they got along well and talked a lot about baseball together. Cal tried to learn any little tips he could form his dad and the minor league players on his dad’s team. When the team practiced, Cal and his little brother, Billy, went out and shagged balls for the team. Cal was the batboy for the team during the games. Cal grew up playing baseball, watching his dad’s team play, and making a competition out of anything he did with his brothers or sister. At the age of seventeen, Cal was already playing for the Orioles in the minors. By the time Cal got to the minors his dad had gotten a job as a coach for the Baltimore Orioles. Only a couple of years later Cal was in the majors with the Baltimore Orioles. Cal had an amazing start in the majors. In 18, Cal was named Rookie of the year. In only his second year, Cal was the league’s MVP. Not long after, his younger brother Billy was on the team. The three Ripkens were the talk of the majors. Cal got along with his brother very well. You could see them talk on the field during the games. Cal was the starter at short while Billy was at second. Cal was in the majors for nineteen years. Every year he made amazing plays and added to his numbers. Just this year he retired from baseball finishing number eight on the chart for the best to ever play the game. In many persons minds he was the best to ever play the game.

This book takes place during Cal’s childhood all the way until now. Cal has lived in many different places do to his dad getting different managing jobs. He has lived in fifteen different cities growing up. Most of Cal’s life was in Baltimore, Maryland.

I really liked this book. It gave plenty of good and interesting info on Cal’s life. I thought it was cool to learn about how much Cal loved baseball and how far you can get with just a simple love for the game. I love play, watch, read, and learn about baseball. That made the book even better. Cal seems like a person I would like to meet someday. I’ve got to see Cal play once before in the old County Stadium. He had an excellent day against the Brewers that day. That made the book a little more interesting. I would recommend this book to any baseball fan.

It has been a popular saying in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean that “ freeness nuh good” (that is anything that is free is not good). However, this phrase should not be associated with all areas of life, especially as it relates to Secondary Education. It is an asset for a society to embark on granting free education. Granting free education up to the secondary level will affect the social and economic welfare of society. Our economy, has to do with financial status of the society both present and future, it also has to do with the number of economically active individuals that are productive in the work area. Social welfare would be characterized has a better nation such as less ghettos, less individuals on the streets idling around, more job opportunity and more schools to facilitate the ones of working age and of schooling age. Free education may look and seem simple but when it is looked at it is very serious and cause a positive difference in the society.

Free education gives an opportunity to each and every one “to be all they can be” as a result of this the economy is affected positively by this great progress of the Government. In granting free education up to secondary level it will result in a higher level of job opportunity in the country. One may say what does this have to do with free education? The answer to this question is the more jobs available the more the labour force will increase so as a result of this more the society receives income the more tax the government receives. In other words it is way to extract revenue for the Government. In recent years the countries with an increase in unemployment there is also an increase in the crime and violence. Crime and violence can and would be decreased by the implementation of free education up to secondary level. Someone that is poor would have a better chance to attend school and become someone of ambition and intelligence, so they can get a job with that secondary education instead of being an idler. Also one looks at Jamaica as a typical example, Jamaica as been marred by crime and violence over a period of time so as a result of this situation Jamaica’s revenue strategies have been changed quit often. The country’s business structure is at trough but with free education it is predicted to be at a “boom”.

Secondly, the society’s social standing would also be affected. There is an old saying, “if yu wha good yu nose afi go run” some individuals at school are ignoring this concept because they are there free, no sense of responsibility being hanged over their shoulder as a result of the freeness they receives by the Government. While others will make good of this free education in every way they can possibly. So in a wider bases there would be less drop outs from school as a result of this the society would have a higher level of education. As a result of free education up to secondary level the parent may find it easier to finance or rather set a foundation for his or her child to receive college education if the child desires, they often do after getting the most important part of there education free of cost, secondary level. With a much more intelligent nation no one can and could stop this nation to make a progress. “ They would log on to progress real progress.”

Free education up to secondary level, really it would demand a lot from the Government to facilitate. All the books, salary for teachers and other staffs all that would have to be taken care of by the government. With these situations one may look free education is a burden on the society but in the long run it would benefit the society and economy in a great deal. Over the past nine to ten years the country is suffering from a situation called “brain drain”, this is occurred when Jamaican citizens with a white-collar job that went to the States to get an education, which they got but did not return to the country of birth to work. These individuals commit acts do not give any thing back to the country so the country looses tax. With the implementation of free education, which will cut the crime and violence, enabling investors to invest in the country and create more job opportunities for the citizens so a result there would not be any need for migration to seek jobs. Also one would not have all the responsibilities to send their child to school, so in the end they may have little funds to invest in the country. Also in the long run if the country progresses the tax payment that is incurred on the countries citizens would decrease and the cost of living would lower.

Order Custom Essay on The Advantages of Free education

To free education up to secondary level it would be a progressive start for the society. However this process is a gradual process, it as to be done gradually and proper thinking has to be done. If this is not done the country may fall in a trough and will not pick or reach at a peak in the economic structure. Again one may look at Jamaica and say Jamaica’s economy is stagnant, they would have to borrow money to do this. Yes they would have to but this is not a short-term plan it is a long-term plan, the end result would be seen in ten or twenty years down the road. One looks at Bermuda and Cuba this system is implemented in these countries and these countries economy is recognizing a strong growth annually. If this system is planned well we can have the same result, as these countries that had implemented these system. Looking at it this Jamaica can even do better with the resources the country has, only if they are used effectively.

Introduction

Globalisation is an issue that has been arising in the last few years. It is an increasing worry due to loss of individuality, as people are tending to follow trends and not rate their personal traditions and culture as important. Globalisation is explained as the world unifying and being as one. It is about the developments that have occurred in the world, bringing us together.

The question states that a consequence of globalisation is man’s retreat to find his personal traditions and culture. This is true is everyone retreated from global. Not everyone does though. Due to the trends and increasing technology some people have retreated to find their individuality again, but some people are happy to follow in the globalisation process.

Seamus Heaney

Seamus Heaney was born in April 1 in County Derry in Northern Ireland. He grew up on a farm with his nine brothers and sisters and in 151, Heaney won a scholarship to the Catholic school, St. Columb’s college in the city of Derry. Heaney moved to Belfast and became a lecturer at St. Joseph’s and later at Queen’s college. Heaney has published several volumes of poetry and although he left the farm at a young age, his experiences on the farm remained a basis for his poetry. A lot of his poetry deals with personal issues retreating from the global. Some of these poems are “Personal Helicon”, “Punishment”, “Digging” and “Tollund Man”.

Personal Helicon

“Personal Helicon” is a poem reflecting Heaney’s journey from childhood to adulthood. Mount Helicon was a place supposedly to be the home of the Muses, the Goddesses in classical mythology who inspired artists and writers. In “Personal Helicon”, Heaney tells of his “personal helicon” his source of inspiration wells. He uses descriptive language such as “trapped sky” which is Heaney being drawn to the reflection in the water of the well. Heaney uses simple structure to convey the meaning of his life being five stanzas. He also uses an irregular rhyming scheme. The tone of the poem is a reminiscing one. Heaney is looking back on his childhood and showing his understanding of life and how he developed spiritually through poetry. A lot of the sentences have connotations, for example, in the third stanza he says, “a white face hovered over the bottom.” He has looked in the well to see his reflection, but this could also mean if we removed our outer casings like pride insecurity, and vanity, although we would then understand ourselves better. Metaphors are expressed also, for example, “to stare, big-eyed Narcissus” and Heaney is saying that Narcissuses is like a human being with thoughts.

Heaney finishes the poem as an adult, wanting to illuminate the “darkness of life” through his poetry. “Personal Helicon” is one of Heaney’s personal experiences, something that not everyone else has experienced. He has retreated from the global and expressed an event that was important to him.

Digging

“Digging” is another poem reflecting Heaney’s memories from childhood. Heaney reminisces on his childhood, remembering his father digging the flowerbed and the stories about his grandfather. Heaney uses simple language to convey his meaning, for example, “my father, digging.” It is easy to relate to and also utilises imagery well. He uses sound and sight, for example, “the squelch and slap” and “the curt cuts of an edge.” The structure is in eight different sized stanzas. Heaney uses some rhyme and rhythm, for example, “my thumb” and “snug as a gun”. Alliteration is often used as an effective form of expressing images. Some examples are, “tall tops” and “buried the bright”. The tone of this poem is a reminiscing one also, as he looks back on his experiences as a child.

The poem starts and ends with references to his finger, thumb and pen. This is showing the theme of the poem. Heaney has a pen and decides to dig with that. He doesn’t have a spade like his father and grandfather, but he’ll dig with his pen. He is still following family traditions but with a pen, not a spade. “Digging” is relatively similar to “Personal Helicon” as they both talk about personal childhood memories. Heaney has moved away from national issues to concentrate on his own memories.

Punishment

“Punishment” is a poem by Heaney that is based on the “bodies in the bog.” Heaney was very fascinated by the Bog people and composed a number of poems about them. In this particular poem, a young girl was dug up and was thought to be an adulteress. Heaney describes about how he imagined she would’ve looked and felt the day of her death. He uses simple language, yet it is very descriptive and effective. An example of a simile is “like a stubble of black corn” which is comparing the girl’s shaved head to corn that has been buried in mud. Heavy alliteration and assonance sounds are used to express the weight of her body and weight of sorrow. An example of this is “body in the bog” and “floating rods and boughs.” The “o” and “b” sounds are heavy. The arrangement of the poem is simple and yet tightly structured. It has eleven stanzas of roughly even length and no rhyme. It almost seems to be a short story broken up into stanzas.

The tone of this poem is empathetic, as Heaney empathises with the girl. He tries to understand what has happened, “I almost love you,” he feels for her. Heaney has concentrated on one person’s in the bog. He finds the bogs fascinating and has expressed one of the stories. This particular bog is in Ireland so he has focused on his own personal culture and beliefs, completely separated from the rest of the world.

Nell

“Nell” is a movie about a young woman named Nell who lives in the wilderness with her mother. Nell’s mother dies, and whilst removing her body, the sheriff and the doctor, Jerome, come across Nell. They never knew she existed and Jerome becomes fascinated by her, and starts to observe her actions. A psychologist, Paula, is taken into this scenario also, to keep observations on her. Nell has her own language and routines that she conducts on a regular basis. Chaos occurs when the court decides she should be taken into the real world.

The movie uses an effective landscape to portray Nell’s surroundings. It is desolate with a lake and lots of green forest. The language Nell uses is very effective as it’s a whole new thing to try and decipher. The images of the landscape and “real world” are effective in showing the differences that Nell must embrace. The tone of the movie is at times encouraging and at others a sense of loss. Nell loses her mother and identical twin, both of whom knew her ways, and now she is surrounded by strangers who want to see “the wild woman.” It is encouraging when Nell connects with her doctor, Jerome, as she is experiencing so many knew things. “Nell” is about retreating into the global and retreating back out. Because she started out by herself, it was near impossible for her to stay in society so she retreats back to her personal traditions and culture.

Conclusion

It is hard to say whether retreating from the global is a good thing or bad thing. If everyone retreats from globalisation, everyone will be selfish and self-centred. Globalisation needs to be carefully looked at and considered, as individuality is important. It is what makes a person and if the world gets tangled up in trends, there will be no individuality.

English Coursework

We have looked at several World War I poems by Wilfred Owen, Siegfried Sassoon and also a poem by Rupert Brooke. I will be looking at a total of four poems, which are “Dulce et Decorum Est” by Wilfred Owen, “Does it matter?” by Siegfried Sassoon, Disabled by Wilfred Owen and “The Redeemer” by Siegfried Sassoon. I will be looking at these poems because they convey strong points, which for many people at the time, describe “real war” and not people’s perceptions of it.

“Dulce et Decorum Est” is probably renowned as being one of the strongest protest poems towards war. This poem tells the story of soldiers who are returning from the front line and who are on their way back to the camps at night when they are attacked by a gas bomb. It presents the fumbling way that the men have to find and put on their gas masks. However, one man doesn’t and it describes how he drowns in his own blood and bodily fluids. Then the way that he is thrown into the back of a wagon and the way that his body has frozen in the position in which he died, with the expression on his face showing how much pain he was in. This poem uses very strong (insert examples) and powerful words to describe the scene wan Wilfred Owen’s feelings on war. The strong and powerful words also put across the fact that the men are not dying “in glory” on the front-line (Quote and Explain). It also emphasises the fact that these images will haunt the men for the rest of their lives. (Insert quote from 1st draft). It also shows that there are no proper facilities for the wounded and the dead cannot be properly dealt with.

“Does it matter?” is really a poem that asks questions. It is a very bitter and sarcastic poem. Each stanza asks a suggestive rhetorical question. The first two stanzas are personal with “Does it matter?”-Losing your…” The third stanza has a plural meaning “Do they matter?” The final stanza says that the home country the war veterans return to, does not really understand the traumas that the soldiers went through. Though the real point of this poem is really saying that the nightmares from the war will never leave you and the fact that no one really knows the torture they went through.

The Movie “The Count of Monte Cristo” by Alexander Dumas and story “The Cask of Amontillado” by Edger Allen Poe share a common theme of revenge. They both portray a man who has had wrong done to him by another, to even the score they make careful plans and get close to their enemy to carry out their blow.

In the movie “The Count of Monte Cristo“ a character by the name of Edmond Dantes is betrayed by his best friend who frames him for a crime and marries his fianc. Edmond wrongly imprisoned for conspiring with Napoleon, becomes consumed by thoughts of vengeance. With nothing but revenge on his mind Edmond works up a plan along with another inmate to make a miraculous escape. The escape didn’t go by the plan but was successful none the less. Edmond finds treasure on an island which was hidden by the other inmate, after which he transforms himself into the mysterious and wealthy Count of Monte Cristo, Claiming himself to be of French nobility Edmond puts his plot of revenge on his friend, who had betrayed him and became his enemy, into action. Edmond Dantes gets close to his enemy who does not recognize him. He then tricks him into losing his fortune and wife. Faced with the chance to finish his enemy off Edmond lets him go and decides to not take revenge because he found out the son of his enemy is actually his own and considers the enemy to be his father. After releasing his betrayer Edmond ends up killing him anyway as self defense when his enemy realizing he has nothing to lose might as well try to kill Edmond.

In the story “The Cask of Amontillado” a character by the name of Montressor is insulted some how by his friend Fortunato. Montressor remains close to Fortunato under the false pretense of friendship knowing that he was going to take his revenge on him for the insult, which had not been forgotten. Montressor pretended to have outward friendliness toward his enemy and shrugs off many insults from the drunken Fortunato, he then invites Fortunato to his home to sample a pipe of what passes for Amontillado, Fortunato being a wine Connoisseur accepts Montressors offer. Once at Montressor’s house they go down to the vault to get the cask of Amontillado Montressor, while giving Fortunato more to drink, then chains the drunken Fortunato to the wall and begins to wall up the vault, allowing Fortunato to slowly gain his senses and realize the stupidity of his actions. Fortunato begins to shriek uncontrollably. Momentarily frightened, Montressor thinks to kill his enemy immediately, but, satisfied with his crime and the amount of torture it will have on Fortunato, Montressor decides simply to scream back at his enemy, and take away any of Fortunatos hope of escape with his own howls.

In both the story and the movie the characters who had been wronged take revenge on the person who wronged them. Through careful planning and infiltrating into the lives of their betrayers Montressor and Edmond Dantes get close to their enemy. After gaining the trust of Fortunato, Montressor takes his revenge in one swift blow by sealing him alive in the catacombs underneath his house. While Edmond Dantes make his revenge slow and painful to his betrayer by making him lose everything he holds dear little by little.
