Many novels have protagonists whom are unique people. These characters often try to help others and improve humanitys state of existence is some way. They can be anybody with any attitude or status in society, but something persuades them to help. These characters will often do anything they can to help in any way, large or small. Many times, the characters will invent a totally new idea to serve others and will pursue it with greater fervor than they would a conventional method. Unfortunately, in novels, like in life, good intentions can end in bad results. Such is the case in the novels Frankenstein and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest. In both of these stories, the well-intentioned protagonists wanted to help others in an unconventional way but ended up failing at least partially. So how did these well-meaning people with unique goals fail? Why did their good intentions end with sour results? These characters failed for three important reasons they were inexperienced; they had minimal control over their situations; and they did not have a well thought-out plan of action. Because of these reasons, the protagonists failed to achieve their goal helping others.

The inventive and well-intentioned characters in Frankenstein and One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest were Victor Frankenstein and McMurphy respectively. The first reason they failed in reaching their goals of philanthropy was the fact that they were inexperienced. They didnt really know what they were doing. For example, Victor Frankenstein discovered the secret of animating dead flesh. Yes, he knew how to do this, but he did not know what the ultimate result of his discovery would be. He could not foresee that the reanimated dead flesh would be flawed. Instead of experimenting further and realizing that his discovery was not very helpful, he decided to jump right ahead and create a super-human monster. He hoped that his discovery would help all of mankind, but it instead became a curse to him and those he loved. If Victor had more experience, he would have known not to jump to conclusions in his excitement and to experiment more with his discovery. Similarly, McMurphy was inexperienced at what he attempted. He wanted to open the inmates eyes to the oppression of Nurse Ratched and the Hospital but he didnt know how to go about it the right way. He just went for it. Unfortunately, he ended up suffering for it in the end and the inmates learned less than he would have wanted. Because of their inexperience in their out of the box methods, Victor and McMurphy both increased their chances of failing.

The next reason why Victor and McMurphy failed was the fact that they had minimal control over their situations. Their lack of control gave them little ability to carry out their goals effectively. Many things happened, out of their power, which doomed their efforts to failure. For Victor, the lack of control was mostly caused by his first reason for failing lack of experience. This was true at first, before he created the monster. After he released his creation, however, Victor had very little control over what was happening. There were a few instances where he could have changed his fate (when the monster requests a wife, for example), but he was mostly powerless to stop the monsters tirades. McMurphy had almost no control over his situation. He was forced into the Hospital and he was ultimately subject to the authority of his enemy, Nurse Ratched. The only power he occasionally had was the fickle favor of his fellow inmates. Using this small and infrequent advantage, he tried to achieve his goal of helping the inmates. It was not enough and his efforts ended in failure.

The final and most important reason why Victor and McMurphy failed was that they lacked a thorough plan-of-action. They had no specific short term goals for meeting their long term goals. They both just did what they wanted; they leapt before they looked. Victor had no specific plan of action after he finished his creation, or even what his creations specific purpose would be. All he did was make the monster, realize his mistake, become afraid, and run away, turning his back on his creation and responsibility. If he knew what he was going to need to do before he finished, he would have not been frightened or surprised. He needed a plan. He didnt, so he panicked. McMurphy didnt have a plan either. He failed to carefully consider how he was going to fight back against Nurse Ratched, how he was going to open the minds of the inmates, and what he was going to do if something unexpected happened. Not only did McMurphy lack a conscious plan-of-action, he didnt even consciously realize his desire to help. This almost certainly doomed him. Imagine if President Bush wanted to take out Saddam and just sent a bunch of bombs his way without any real planning. His effort would almost certainly fall apart and fail. Similarly, Victor and McMurphy lacked a plan-of-action, their efforts failed, and their goals went unrealized.

Victor and McMurphy failed in achieving their goals for three reasons they were inexperienced, they had little control, and they didnt have plans to carry out their goals. McMurphy wanted to help the inmates to fight back against Nurse Ratcheds oppression, but he didnt succeed. Victor Frankenstein wanted to help all of humanity by discovering the secret of immortality, but he failed. Well-intentioned people in real life fail because of the same reasons. For example, Robert Oppenhiemer, the creator of the atomic bomb, had no idea of the full magnitude of his work, could not have had previous experience with a similar situation, was powerless because of control by the government, and could not have had a feasible plan-of-action for a unique situation that no one could predict. Instead of helping humanity (his goal), he unintentionally contributed to the threat of its extinction. As evidenced by Victor Frankenstein and McMurphy, when trying something new the risk of failure is greatly increased, especially if you are not prepared. Unfortunately, this even applies to trying something with the intention of helping people.

Throughout history dreams have been documented, studied, and interpreted by researchers, therapists, even the Bible, proving that despite doubts and disbelievers, dreams can reveal issues in relationships, causes of stress, a childhood trauma, etc; things helping people to heal mentally, who otherwise may not have. Looking back thousands of years people have been trying to explain them and what they represent. The ideas that have seemed to stick are the ones that deal with dreams as the subconscious, trying to tell your conscious something, rather than some of the earlier ideas that dreams are messages from God, or that they will tell you the future. For such philosophies to come about, it is necessary for dreams and all their details to be documented. While specific objects do not always represent the same thing, the idea of what is being dreamt can be very revealing.

The earliest records of dreams are the Assyrian and Babylonian dream books from Egypt, around 66 BC (Stevens, 14). During this time period, the primary interest in dreams was in warnings they were believed to provide about the future. For example, if one were to dream of drinking water, it meant long life, while drinking wine meant a short life (Stevens 15). There was an Egyptian god of dreams know as Serapis. He had numerous temples throughout Egypt that were worshiped regularly, just as other gods were. Dreams were not taken at all lightly. The first dream analysis to come from Egypt was Chester Beatty. His papyrus is now in the British Museum. It contains some 00 records of dreams. While Beatty supported some ideas of dreams telling bits of the future, he also used the same principles in interpreting dreams as Sigmund Freud did many years later the elucidation of visual or verbal puns, the detection of hidden associations, and the use of contraries (when a dream’s meaning is the opposite of what it represents) (Stevens, 15).

The Greeks also had a set of beliefs and rituals for dealing with dreams. Their god of healing, Asklepia, played a large role in this. There were a number of sanctuaries for him situated all throughout Greece in places of beauty with hills, woods, and sacred streams near the sea. This is where healing and the incubation of dreams took place. Incubation was a ritual commonly preformed. A sick or deeply troubled person would undergo a long hard journey to a temple. Here he would remove his clothes and drink sacred water. Then he would be dressed in clean robes before entering the abaton (the sacred abode of the gods), which was filled with snakes. Here the patient would be left to sleep. The healing god would appear to him in a dream with a message to help in making a cure (Stevens, 4).

Dreams have great significance in the Bible as well. Larry Kettlemen tells us this in his book Dreams. They are said to be messages from God. He was reported as saying, “Hear now my words If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak to him in a dream.” Because of this, dreams were taken very seriously in terms of religion. For example, in the Bible Jacob dreams of the ladder reaching up to heaven (8th chapter of Genesis) “And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven And behold the angels of God ascending and descending. Angels are spoken of quite frequently in the presence of dreams. There is a Jewish story of what happens to us before we are born. Supposedly an angel reveals the soul of all things (heaven and earth) and everything our human destiny will bring. At the moment of birth, the angel flips our nose and we forget all we have been shown. At night however, our souls escape from our bodies to heaven. That was thought to be a dream. From ancient cultures to the Bible, there are many different ways of explaining dreams and their purpose.

The best-known philosopher on dreams is probably Sigmund Freud. He was an extraordinarily intelligent man with many ideas sifting around. His book explains in great detail is theories. More specifically, he explains the conscious and the subconscious, two states of mind. The conscious is when you are awake and fully aware of what you are doing, thinking, feeling, etc. The subconscious is usually when you are sleeping and are not in control of you thoughts (dreams). Freud referred to dreams in a number of ways. He said they are “the guardian of sleep… they represent the best in us and the worst…they are derived from childhood experience… they can be caused by a disturbance while sleeping.” There is also the popular saying, “dreams come from indigestion” (Freud, 150). Freud devoted his life to studying dreams and their hidden meanings. He actually developed a method to help people overcome their problems by analyzing their dreams. He called it psychoanalysis- an analysis of the mind and the personality. Often times he discovered that personality troubles originated from the basis of desires. The strongest desires came from people’s childhoods. Children are sometimes forced to hold back their desires and therefore they are forgotten by the conscious mind, but not the subconscious. He called this repression. He was able to determine what that desire was by looking at the person’s dreams. If he could find it in the subconscious, then he could expose it once again to the conscious mind, therefore allowing the person to confront the issue at hand and deal with it.

While this was a large focus of his career, he also recognized that events in dreams could be in relation to events in recent days or even to a disturbance while sleeping. For example, have you ever dreamt of a fire drill or a siren, only to wake up and realize your alarm clock is going off? The mind plays tricks on itself, allowing it to remain asleep. The most important dreams, however, are usually the reoccurring ones. They tend to represent something important, something one needs to discover about him/herself.

In Freud’s book The Interpretation of Dreams, he discusses a specific reoccurring case that originated from a childhood experience. Freud explains

Someone who attending a course of lectures of mine and boasted that his dreams very seldom underwent distortion reported to me that not long before he had dreamt of seeing his former tutor in bed with the nurse who had been with his family till his eleventh year. In the dream he has identified the locality where the scene occurred. His interest had been aroused and he had reported the dream to his elder brother, who had laughingly confirmed the truth of what he had dreamt. His brother remembered it very well, as he had been six years old at the time. The lovers had been in the habit of making the elder boy drunk with beer, whenever circumstances were favorable for intercourse during the night. The younger boy-the dreamer-who was then three years old and slept in the room with the nurse, was not regarded as an impediment.

This is where the dream is of what has been called the ‘recurrent’ type that is to say, where a dream was first dreamt in childhood and then constantly from time to time during adult sleep.

Carl G. Jung is another man recognized and well respected for his studies in dream analysis. He believed that the unconscious contains repressed material and possibilities for development, or in other words, to enhance the clarity of one’s conscious choices (Clift, 0). “Amplification” was the method of association he taught (symbols and aspects are amplified by the dreamer’s association with the symbol). He also believed that figures in dreams could be interpreted objectively or subjectively. An objective interpretation would represent the dreamer him/herself. Mostly, however, he thought dreams could be analyzed subjectively, meaning that the dream represents something within the dreamer (Clift, 6). Jung also had some rather farfetched theories. He was convinced that dream symbols are passed from generation to generation. This he called the “collective unconscious.” Symbols once present in a father’s dream could be passed on to his son, and to his son, and so forth.

Recording one’s dreams is something everyone should take the time to do. Besides the fact that is can reveal things about yourself you never knew, it actually gets to be quite fun. Dreams are a part of us, but more often then not they are forgotten or ignored. So many things happen in all the years of living some are big some are small, some are celebrated some are mourned, while others are simply brushed aside. A great many of these events will weave themselves into a dream in some way or another, even if it is just once, in a very tiny way. If those dreams are not recorded, most times they will be forever forgotten shortly after awakening. In keeping a journal of dreams, one is able to look back at them and try to relate them to what is going on in his/her lives, good or bad.

Recording your dreams does take some discipline. It is best to do it every morning. Keep a notepad and pen right next to the bed. As soon as you wake up, write down everything you can remember about the dreams from that night. Be as specific as humanly possible. Record every detail The weather, the colors, the time, furniture, buildings, landscape, feeling, tone, words head/spoken, thoughts that came, the people, their features (age/height, hair/eye/skin color), describe everything. Even the smallest detail may help in analyzing the dream.

For thousands of years dreams have been fascinating philosophers. There are many different theories on them, but all support that dreams are important and worth documenting and analyzing. Dreams are more than entertainment while resting the body and mind; they are a window to the unknown of oneself.

The method of Activity-Based Costing (ABC) was developed primarily for solving problems which emerged from traditional cost management systems. Troubleshooting in the management of companies throughout the late 70’s and especially the early 80’s held a constant presence.

The problems generated were mainly from the traditional cost accounting systems’ way of functioning which provided the management with inaccurate data. Where the old cost accounting systems failed badly was in supplying the company’s management with inappropriate information in order for crucial decisions to be taken in the correct and true perspective of a given company’s true position in its market territory. Since this currently accessible “itemized” information could not be provided to a company’s decision making sector, the information provided had an impact which of course distorted the decision which would have otherwise been taken in the light of different and more accurate information.

This misinformation had an adverse impact on a multitude of managerial decisions especially in the multi-product firm sector in respect of long-term, mid-term and short-term consequences such as investments in technology, quantity and specification of product production. The accuracy of data on which management decisions are based in order to maximize efficiency and establish one’s company identity in a competing market through, besides quality, a selection of sound marketable prices applied in the proper time scale to all of a company’s product range, is of paramount importance.

In other words activity based costing pin-points problems by focusing on the activities associated with operating the business. The traditional cost systems haven’t the capability to afford this insight, and so do not touch the subject, only in the case of reports that isolate salaries, benefits, and so on.

If a manager were told that the cutting of cost was first on the list of priorities, he or she would cut headcount, understandably believing that it might possibly be the only largest cost contributor in the entire company. But today people are not the major cost contributors, it is, in fact, the cost of the activities that people are engaged in which contribute more to the firm’s costs. How often have we heard the lament, the workload is the same although we have cot down staff by ten percent? Activity based costing allows managers to attribute costs to activities and products much more accurately than conventional accounting methods. This method is more than an accounting tool. These tools give you a view of what you have done financially and are fundamental to shareholding disclosure and the statutory reporting. But it is just as equally important to have the ability to be able to translate this cost information into the language of operational units and the business in which it is to be applied. With activity based costing management is in a position get a strong and comprehensive, internal view of the company products or services and customers. Armed with this information, the management of a company is automatically put in a position where financial, operational, and strategic decisions can be made, such as outsourcing and pricing.

Activity based costing identifies the activities that are responsible for costs. It is sometimes calles Transaction costing and its major advantage over other methods is that it can greatly enhance the tracability of overhead costs. This can result in more accurate unit cost data for managers, if placed into the correct hands. Activity costs are passed on to products or services only if the product or service uses the activity, for example activities consume resources, and products or services consume activities and so on. As the number of activity measures increases, activity based costing is better able to capture the underlying economics of the companys operations, and the reported costs of activities, products and services come to light. In addition, activity based costing analyzes all activities that exist in a company in order to support production as well as possible and deliver goods and services as efficiently as possible.

The optimum accuracy in costing can be attained by recognising four general levels of activities within a company, each of which can be further subdivided into specific cost activity centres. These four are as follows;

Unit level activities. These arise as a result of the total volume of production going through a facility. An example could be the consumption of power as a result of the number if hours required by a machine to complete all units on a production line which could be thought of as a unit-level activity. Some companies recognise one unit-level activity centre but most companies recognise two; One related to machine activity and the second related to labour activity.

Batch- level activities. These could include things such as placement of purchace orders, shipments to customers. Costs at batch level are dependent on the number of the batches produced rather than on the number of units made, or sold. The actual cost of, say, placing an order would be the same for one item or 10,000 items, so the total cost generated by a batch-level activity would be the function of the times an order would be placed rather than on the total quantity of items ordered.

Product level activity. These are specific and are related to the support of the production of a particular product like for instance special test routines, machine maintainence inventories.

Facility-level activities. All of these activities relate to the production as a whole and therefore are usually combined into a single activity centre. These costs can include such items as insurance, property tax, athletics facilities for the workers.

Where companies are using Activity based costing as a secondary system they should not add facility-level costs to the products. This can lead to misleading data made available to managers and in turn result in wrong decision making, however, most companies do this whether Activity based costing is their primary or secondary system.

There are various approaches for designing and implementing an activity based costing system. The size of the company and desired outcome must be considered before even thinking about, let alone attempting to make the transition from a traditional cost accounting system to an activity based costing system. Larger firms should consider pilot programs before implementing the new system across the whole organization.

The most basic approach is to use activity based costing in conjunction with a companys current accounting system. In this case, software which has been developed over the years for this specific purpose can be bought to help structure the tiering down from the traditional accounting system to a detailed activity based accounting configuration. The traditional accounting system is still used and the activity based costing structure is an add-on or shadow system to be use when specific information is needed for a management based decision. An off line system can allow an organization to improve its cost information without disrupting their current information and financial systems. This is recommended for small firms or as a first step towards full activity based costing integration for a larger firm.

At the other end of the spectrum, activity based costing can be used in place of the traditional accounting system. Every cost related facet of the accounting system would be reported to the activity based costing structure. In order to institute major organizational change, all employees must fully incorporate activity based costing into their work practices and use it as their primary source of business information. Cost and performance measurement systems and all incentive systems, for obvious reasons, have to be tied to the activity based costing numbers. The advantage of using activity based costing as the sole accounting system is that it will be used consistently for daily managemental decision making and employees will not retreat to their old practices. A traditional accounting system usually cannot report costs by processes because the purpose is to help the accounting department keep the books. The purpose of activity based costing is to help operations do their job by making cost information available at a level that everyone can use for day to day decision making.

The biggest obstacle to incorporating activity based costing as a way of life is employee resistance. Unit managers may be afraid that activity based costing is just a way for senior management to discover detailed information about a department or to reveal inefficient practices that had previously been hidden by the traditional accounting system. The corporate culture must be such that new information is not used against a business unit.

Instead, all company employees should be encouraged to dig up problems and inefficiencies so that all of those practices can be changed and decisions can be made that will benefit the company as a whole. The decision to adopt the system taken, it is essential that everyone should understand and agree that a cost-conscious approach is the companys priority, and activity based costing is the tool to make that possible.

Managers of lower levels should be part of the activity based costing system implementation team as well as representatives from manufacturing, engineering and information systems since all of these people will be using the system coherently. A diversified group also helps achieve a higher level of acceptance and ownership throughout the company. Information on the progress of the new system should be available to everyone at any time. Before any implementation is put into action, it is helpful to convince key employees to give activity based costing a fair chance before they are made redundant. Once the system is in place and employees see its benefits first hand, they are likely to be excited about being involved with the new system. To obtain continued support from employees, management must show that information from the activity based costing system is actually being used to make decisions and track performance on every level. When the new system promotes changes that reduce costs and eliminate inefficiencies, employees should be made aware of how their efforts have positively contributed to the increased profitability of the company. By doing this, employees will feel like an important and inseperable part of the new operation and thus offer less resistance when it comes down to implementing the activity based costing system.

Another important step to implementing activity based costing and getting buy-in at all levels is extensive training. All employees must be educated in the principles and mechanics of activity based costing. Depending on the level of involvement, employees may be trained in the basic concepts of activity based costing, problem solving, information analysis or how to build a new activity based costing system.

Implementation of activity based costing can take anywhere from to 15 months depending on the size of the company or plant. After the new system is in place, the old accounting system should be disguarded as soon as possible if activity based costing is to be used exclusively.

The process for setting up a new activity based costing system is not simple and goes beyond the scope of this paper. A matrix must be established for each product that tracks all activities performed for the product and all of the resources the activities consume. This information is probably not readily available and must be dug up. This can be done through searching existing documentation and historical cost information, workshops, surveys and interviews with the people who do the work. Many statistical measurements must be developed to spread overhead costs to products and processes. Larger companies usually hire a professional in activity based costing to help get the system up and running correctly.

The reason activity based costing produces such significant results is that it changes the culture of the organization. If a companys priority is to make cost conscious decisions and eliminate inefficiencies and unprofitable activities, then all employees must be given the tools, the know-how and the encouragement to work towards that objective. Activity based costing provides visibility to information that was previously hidden in a traditional accounting system especially when companies adopt Just-in-time inventory systems, eliminating inventories and reducing costs.

Therefore, it is my considered opinion that if given the right data and correct incentives to make the required adjustments to corporate culture, employees will have the means and the motivation to work towards eliminating excess costs and to work towards achieving the most affordable product possible.

After the war, Agamemnon dishonored Chryses, who was the daughter of Apollo’s priest. As a favor, Apollo threatened the people of Priam’s city; if the priest’s daughter was not given back then a terrible plague was going to get the Danaans. And it did. Many people were dying. After Achilleus found out from Kalchas, why Apollo was mad, Agamemnon stood up and told everyone that it is not a problem to give Chryses back to her father, but since he won the war, he believes that he deserves a gift. Any sort of gift. But Achilleus responded by saying that there is no way that he will receive a prize now, since everything that has been won during the war, already has been distributed. But if Zeus ever gives another city to be plundered, he assures him that another prize will be distributed. But Agamemnon believes that it is very unfair that he has to give away his prize and Achilleus gets to keep his. Achilleus was about to leave, but Agamemnon told him that even if Apollo will take away Chryses from him, he will then go to Achilieus’ home and take away his prize which was Briseis. After this argument, Athene, who was sent by Hera, came and told them to hold their anger. But Agamemnon did not stop being angry with Achilleus, and still decided to keep his promise about his threat. So he decided that when he gets Briseis from Achilleus’ house, that is when he will give up Chryses.

Winter, spring, summer, fall, the four seasons of the year. Each with its own qualities that might grab one person but not another. The season that really turns me on is summer. Not that I dont like the others its just that during spring it rains alot and its kinda saying just a couple months and summers here. So I think spring along with winter and fall tease me that summers just around the corner or a year away they almost make me cry. Summer is the season that I wait for and when it comes I take full advantage of it but once its gone I have to start the long count down till next year. In the spring time stuff is growing coming to life, in the fall and winter stuff is dieing or already dead, but in the summer everything is alive and its when I come alive too.

During the summer I can do almost anything immaginable or at least try. School is out so there is only one thing stopping me from have the best time I can my parents. But most of the time they let me do whatever I want thank god. In the summer I can wake up to birds singing, a view of the lake, and the sun gleaming in through my windows. I love waking up to all of this but wish I could put it on hold for a couple hours because waking up at 6 a.m. is not my idea of a good mourning. So after a week or two the blankets go up and my room is transformed into the liar of dracula. I crawl out of my room at about 11 every day and retreat back to it at about 1 a.m. then I have to drown out the noise of crickets and frogs to go to sleep. One of the main reasons I love summer is because my parents are gone all day not that Id do anything bad like throw a party, Im a good kid. I turn my house and yard into a playground, riding dirt bikes around the house, moving every matrise in the house down to the basement and playing football, or jumping from the roof onto the trampoline, and most importantly covering up every trace of the stuff I had do to the house. Soccer is my sport and I play it religously all year. But its the best in the summer, Im on so many teams that its nice to just ride my bike to the fields and practise by myself. Living on a lake is nice but summer glorafies it and makes me apreciate it so much more than any other time of the year. When most people are stuck inside peeling themselves off of the coffee table to fix the fan, Im living it up in the water. Doing what ever I want to racing my boat, skiing, tubing, para-sailing, or my favorite playing pirates. I get my canoe and go sink who ever I run into. When I have nothing to do Ill go eat at the famous Essex House of Pizza, which is redicuasly over priced same with the Junction but when they are the closest thing to food Ill caugh up the dough. To me summer is like a journal you can write what ever you want in it an nobody has to know, which is just like my summers I can basically do whatever I want but sometimes you could say people look in the journal and I do get in trouble, but its summer where being grounded dosent last long because before long mom kicks you out of the hosue.

Summer is my favorite season and where I live its set up for summer. So even though its only a couple months of the year they are the best, They are the months when animals come back and the our part of the planet comes to life. Between spring, summer, fall, and winter, summer is the only one that represents life so in the famous words of Sid the Sloth from the movie Ice Age I choose life.

Among the first epistle to be written were the letters of Paul to the New Testament churches. Women established themselves in the genre as men realized that the form was more suitable to the female writers style. However, due to the modest qualities of the women, little was ever published (Goldsmith vii). In the eighteenth-century, epistolary peaked in Europe. Among the popular epistolary novels of this time were Lacloss Les Liaisons Dangereueses(178), Richardsons Pamela(1740) and Clarissa(1747), and Rousseaus La Nouvelle Heloise(1761)(Norwich 148). Later in the same century, Forcey says the epistolary novel could not survive as a dominant form because, in the fast changing polygot world of . . . Anglo-America, it fell victim to the same forces of seduction and betrayal that its heroines were unable to avoid(5). In the 170s, fictional letters reentered the literary arena. Creative writers spawned this interest with Michel Butors Illustrations III(17) and Bod Randalls The Fan(177)(Altman ).

Epistolary Novels

An epistolary novel is one that is written in the form of a series of letters exchanged among the characters of the story with extract? from their journals sometimes included(Norwich 148). This genre exhibits the quality in which there are two separate audiences to the letter a character of the novel and the reader. The reader is required to become his own narrator since the plot is not being directly told by the author. The author can be compare to an editor since he has control of the epistolary composition. However, he must trust that the reader will understand the meaning and the purpose behind each correspondence(Forcey ).

Epistles from the New Testament

Buy The History of Epistolary term paper

When speaking of epistles, people frequently think of Paul, the apostle of Christ and writer of many of the books in the New Testament. His God-inspired letters were written to and concerning the churches and pastors(called the Pastoral Letters) of that time period. However, the meanings of the letters written in the first-century A.D are still alive in todays Christian church. The foundation, the primary establisher of meaning in the epistles, is the life Jesus recorded in the four gospels. Paul also used the ideas of logos and ethos in the letters. Since the Holy Bible is God-inspired there is absolutely nothing that is illogical within its covers. An example of syllogism can be seen in Romans 5-4.

And we rejoice in the hope of the Glory of God. Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.

The authors credibilty, ethos, must be established for a successful epistle. In his Corinthians, Paul must establish his ethos since the church does not believe his claims as one of the Twelve Apostles. He writes of his pain and suffering for cause of the Cross

[I have] been exposed to death time and time again. Five times I received from the Jews the forty lashes minus one. Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I spent a night and a day in the open sea.( Cor 11-5)

Paul continues writing of his suffering of spreading the gospel for the remainder of the epistle. Certainly a man who has suffered this persecution and has no doubts has seen the power of God.

There are so many advantages to music that one could say it’s truly amazing. Music helps us to identify with ourselves, be expressing what we are truly feeling on the inside. By listening to this particular field of art, we become emotionally connected with the artists performing the song. It’s as if you feel what they are singing and the way they are expressing their inner feelings as well. It’s a strange combination of both. Sometimes you will fall asleep and dream of the songs, you mentally see what the songs are saying, and what is meant by them. Then at times you become so attached to a particular song that you physically act on it. Violence is a normal reaction to the genre of music known as metal. As you listen to this music, your adrenaline begins to pump and you become enraged with anger. To vent this anger people may hit or strike others, and sometimes objects. At a concert, a mosh-pit is how people vent their frustrations. They all leap into the air slamming into one another, unleashing their feelings unto all the people around them. Strangely though no one is mad at each other. It’s as one big happy family of violence and aggresion. All in all it’s a well environment to fulfill your inner most depictions of your feelings. If they are not vented somehow then you will fall under a heavy depression which is not good for anyone. You may get done, have low self-esteem, and sometimes push away all those around you. If this happens seek help from a physician.

CivilWarLand

Picture a place where the dark half of your mind comes into view. All the weird things that you have ever thought off come into play. Messed up amusement parks where people die very easily. A place where if you have a defect you are sold into slavery because you have claws for feet or a turkey neck. I liked the book. It was very different from anything that I have ever read. The book seemed like a cross between a redneck, KKK, a gangster, and a fat guy. It just seemed like Saunders was having fun with what he was doing in a dark way. Poking fun at society. An example of this is all the amusement parks that are in his stories. He makes it out to be the only places were you could have fun. Like a place you wonder around aimlessly around for hours not because you want to because you have to. It’s like with the short story the Hunger Artist. At the end of the story all the people are still looking at the cage because there is something in there. It would not have mattered it there was a dog or a cat or another person just so long there was something. It is somewhat parallel to our society and television. It doesn’t matter what’s on as long there is something.

The first short story is called CivilWarLand in Bad Decline. It starts out with the main character is trying to woo a potential investor to support the park but a gang problem dismays the investor. He fears for his job because he did not close the deal. His personal life is in no better shape than his work. His wife doesn’t like him too much because he is stuck in a dead end job. His boss has him hire a crazed Viet-Nam vet to deal with the gangs. It starts out that he takes care of the local gangs, but when a local boy steals a piece of candy from the store. Sam finds him kills him cuts his hands off and sends it back to his employer with a note saying I found the kid that was stealing and I need some more ammo. The story ends with Sam killing his employer because he knows too much. Mean while Sam went on a killing spree, basically anybody was fair game. I thought that this story was a great opening story for the book. It sets a tone for the whole book that has dark humor written all over it. It just seemed that this was the only story that would have fit as the opening story.

I really did not like the story Isabelle so I am not going to talk about it.

Buy Civil war land in bad decline term paper

The Wavemaker Falters is the third story in CivilWarLand in Bad Decline. It’s about a man that again works at an amusement park. He kills a little kid because he was not paying any attention because he was looking at some chicks by the pool and the kid gets sucked in. For the rest of the story the boy visits him at night and they talk all night long. The boy tries to be scary but he is his scariest when he tries to do normal things. His wife is having an affair with his boss because he can’t perform in bed. His life in general is just shit. At the end of the story the boy’s father calls and says to him that he can not let him live while his son is dead. His response was I’ll leave the door open. He some what redeems himself by saying that this is as low as I go, so it seems that there is some hope for him.

My favorite story out of this book probably has to be the 400-Pound CEO. The book is about an overweight man named Jeffery working for a ruthless boss at Humane Raccoon Alternatives. The goal of the company is to re-locate the pesky raccoons that rummage through your trash. They relocate them to a pit after a tire iron to the back of the head. Jeff’s boss is Tim an ex-con. He went to jail because he purposely backed over a frat boy. In side he earned his MBA. Everybody that works with Jeffery makes fun of him. They place hippo magnets on his cubicle and make fun of him right to his face. Yet he still keeps going because he thinks there is something better out in world for him and that he has to get a little shit thrown at him to move on. I think the same way as this Jeffery. I can relate to him about this. Things start to get complicated when a female co-worker asks him out on a date. He says yes because he has been in love with this woman for as long as he can remember. When he goes over to her house he brings a present for her son. The date goes on and they have a good time. Later he learns that the only reason she went out with him was because of a bet. She apologizes but says she needed the money that would pay for the phone. A couple days later at work while he is working late he sees his boss and the girl he just went out with go down to the basement for some rough stuff. He says nothing but everyone at work already knows but they never really talk about that. A few more days go bye and he sees his boss going home but he sees a girl digging around the lime pit and collecting the bones of dead raccoons. Tim gets over there and starts to strangle her. Jeff runs along and puts Tim a big bear hug that kills him. He goes back to the office and thinks to himself this is my opportunity to make something of myself. To turn it all around, that one shot that we all look for in life. He forges Tim’s handwriting and says that Tim left him in charge. He was going to bring the company around to doing the right thing. But in the end he got caught up and arrested. He only got 60 years instead of life because the judge was sympathetic to him because he was once also fat.

I picked these stories because they are all about people trying to do the right thing and it comes back to haunt them in the end. The first story Sam was just trying to get rid of the street gangs that where plaguing his community. In the Wavemaker, he can’t let go of what he has done in his past and that affects his future and the 400 lb CEO. Jeff just tries to be a nice guy but nobody can look past that. Even in our culture people have made fun of others because they are different from us. I think that George Saunders was pointing out societies faults in all his stories but more so in these three.

Jose’s Saramago’s writing style was something that at first threw me off. He writes with little punctuation and page long sentences aren’t surprising. “Speech runs on in a sprawling mess, How does that work, By separating each statement with a comma and a capital, Oh I see, It takes a while to get used to. I initially thought it was clever; none of the characters are named, either, merely referred to by their position - the first man, the doctors wife, the man with the black eye-patch, and so on - and the combination of the two is intensely claustrophobic. You never quite feel you can see whats going on, you feel that your viewpoint is constrained - in fact, you feel partially blind.” I disagree with his statement.

While perplexing to some readers, Saramagos unabashed style gives the feeling of a firsthand account of the events, adding to the realism and tension of the novel. It provides a flowing rhythm similar to an oral dialogue. Not only the dialogue, but also the character’s thought process is also written in this style. Since we have to associate the text with the speaker, it allows us to find out more about the characters through our own judgement. We are forced to imagine the situation or else we would be completely lost. The ambiguity demands a little time to get used to, but it does become customary. I do agree the style gets confusing at times, especially when dialogue is exchanged with more than two people. It becomes confusing to follow exactly who’s saying what, which can lead to multiple interpretations. This is another criticism with the book, that it is an allegory without a referent. We are left wondering what it all means. The metaphor of blindness, and the difference between “seeing” and “understanding” has previously been explored. Although this seems to be the bottom line, with a character suggesting they had never really been blind, that perhaps the sighted do not really see, the plot and use of this metaphor is eminently worth reading.

“This is his talent, I believe, of taking a formulaic structure of seeming insanity and moulding it into a narrative where it is made human by the weakest of our kind.” This statement holds true, as so many critics seem to praise this book. Yet, this story could also be seen as a stalker or potential murderer intruding on another’s personal affairs. Though unlikely Senhor Jose will be compelled to harm her, his quest has already seen him unexpectedly breaking the law more than once. “By illuminating the mundane details of where she went to school, the identity and secrets of her godparents, why she was married, he wilfully connects to this woman through the incalculable minutiae that makes up our lives. He also gives himself a purpose and makes himself a little less like Saramago’s (anti-hero) predecessors.” It is also interesting to note that this event is how Senhor Jose will be recorded in history. By looking for the unknown woman she becomes alive, as mentioned in the line “put it [the record of the unknown woman] in the archive of the living, as if she hadn’t died”. By this quest, Senhor Jose is given a new meaning to his life. His obsession and motive for finding her, whether being the thrills of an adventure or to suppress his loneliness, has defined who he is for us. Senhor Jose now has a story worth telling; reducing our lives to statistics “is rejected by Senhor Jos when he seeks out the details of the unknown woman’s past.” His adventure has given him a purpose, and even found a friend in an old lady. “Searching seeking is part and parcel of our existence.” The more information he collects, the more of the mystery is unravelled, and greater the sense of accomplishment. Our desperate and lonely character, in an attempt to have a connection with another human being, has at least found his own identity.

The poem “Storm Warnings”, by Adrienne Rich, contrasts both the literal and metaphoric meaning of a brewing storm. On a literal connotation a storm is merely a storm, though in a metaphoric sense a storm can be a representation of danger or trouble. The first stanza briefly tells the reader that a storm is approaching. In an attempt to view the storm, the narrator anxiously “walks from window to closed window” (line 6). The second stanza simply revels the internal and external feeling that the narrator senses with the presences of a storm. Perhaps the theme of the poem is reveled in line 1 when Rich states the “weather in the heart” comes to those “regardless of prediction”. Just like a storm, danger will prevail unsuspectingly. The third stanza states that the narrator accepts the storm and is not willing to alter its path. Rich attempts to illustrate that we have no control over danger. The last stanza repeats that of the third and revels that the narrator will continue to live as though the storm was never present. This also is a suggestion to the reader that although we cannot prevent the storm there are things that can be done to protect us from its cruelty.

frontier age, this is an everyday account of slaves been punish

for there action toward his or her owner. In the mid 1800s

of Augusta County, slavery was the foreground of building or

establishing frontier settlement. Blacks and Mulattos were bound

out for indenture service for a term, could succeed in frontier life

and were valuable long-term investments to their owner.

Blacks and Mulattos were bound out for indenture service

for a term. Indenture service was an essential to the frontier

lifestyle and a way for the government to get rid of children that

would be a burden to there society. Take for example, Christopher

Roarreys contract of indenture service.

In 1748 Christopher Roarrey was bound out until he attain

the age of thirty- one, the destiny of a free yet

impoverished, illegitimate, mulatto child. If he survived his

indenture, Christopher received no tangible freedom dues

for his labor, a return due white indentured servants

(Simmons 16).

In another way, Hannah Hurely indenture service was some degree

better than Christopher.

Beginning at the age of three Hannahs indenture was to

last until she reached of thirty-one ... but by law her master,

William Bethel, to teach her to read the Bible; to provide her

with meat, drink, washing, lodging, and apparel; and to pay

her freedom dues (16).

As you can see, indentured service during the frontier age for minorities

was a very hard life to lead.

In addition to being indenture servants to their owners, Blacks and

Mulattos could succeed in frontier life. For example the success of Edward

Tarr, who was once a slave, was able to purchase a home and land in

Augusta County. “It would appear despite his race, the former slave

represented the quintessential frontier man land-owner, businessman,

church member, and taxpayer” (16). Tarrs home became very popular

with multicultural visitors, local and alike. “Local people and travelers

alike patronized his blacksmith shop. Tarr’s membership in the Timber

Ridge Presbyterian Church, located a few miles from his home, and his

thriving trade caused his shop to become a popular meeting place for other

free Negroes, whites of the “middlin sort,” and neighboring slaves” (16).

As you can see, Black and Mulattos could succeed in life the with the

help of hard work, confidence, and common courtesy.

Being that we are the third rock from the sun, we constantly are interacting with its’ atmosphere and weather. Meteorology plays a constant role in our everyday lifestyle. It affects us as individuals also businesses such as agriculture as well as travel. It is important to understand the fundamentals of how this meteorology system works.

First of we all know that the sun gives out heat. Along with the heat the sun also sends out energy in the form as solar radiation. Solar radiation can pass through space and the gases in the atmosphere. Solar energy heats anything that it hits. Energy cannot be made or destroyed, but it can change from one form to another. Energy is either potential energy, (stored energy) or kinetic energy, (movement energy). The sun is very hot and emits solar radiation. The energy from solar radiation can be changed to heat energy as in solar heating, electrical energy using a photovoltaic cell as in solar cars, and to chemical energy by photosynthesis in green plants (http//www.sustainableenergy.qld.edu.au/html/what.html).

There is a popular misconception that the seasons on the Earth are caused by varying distances of the Earth from the Sun on its elliptical orbit. This is not correct. One way to see that this reasoning may be in error is to note that the seasons are out of phase in the Northern and Southern hemispheres when it is Summer in the North it is Winter in the South. The primary cause of the seasons is the .5 degree of the Earths rotation axis with respect to the plane of the ecliptic, This means that as the Earth goes around its orbit the Northern hemisphere is at various times oriented more toward and more away from the Sun, and likewise for the Southern hemisphere (http//csep10.phys.utk.edu/astr161/lect/time/seasons.html).

Air pressure and fronts define arctic atmospheric circulation patterns. Air pressure is a measure of the force exerted by air on all objects. Air pressure is related to temperature. Given equal volumes, warm air is lighter (less dense) than cold air and consequently exerts less pressure Changes in air pressure often signify weather changes. Rising air pressure usually means fair weather, whereas falling air pressure generally signals stormy weather. This is because a drop in air pressure often indicates that a cyclone, or low pressure system, is moving into an area, bringing clouds and precipitation. A rise in air pressure frequently means that an anticyclone, or high pressure system is moving into an area, bringing fair weather. A change in air pressure signals the advance or passage of a front. Fronts are the narrow transition-zone boundaries separating two air masses of contrasting properties (temperature and humidity). Low pressure systems often develop along frontal boundaries and cloud cover and precipitation often occurs in the vicinity of fronts.Humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air and can be described in different ways, including relative humidity, which is the term used most often in weather information meant for the public. Relative humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air compared with the amount of vapor needed to make the air saturated at the airs current temperature. Humidity is a measure of the amount of water vapor in the air, not the total amount of vapor and liquid. For clouds to form, and rain to start, the air does have to reach 100% relative humidity, but only where the clouds are forming or where the rain is coming from. This normally happens when the air rises and cools. Often, rain will be falling from clouds where the humidity is 100% into air with a lower humidity. Some water from the rain evaporates into the air its falling through, increasing the humidity, but usually not enough to bring the humidity up to 100% (http//nsidc.org/arcticmet/factors/pressure.html).

The earth’s atmosphere is interesting. The Earth is surrounded by a blanket of air which we call the atmosphere. It reaches over 560 kilometers (48 miles) from the surface of the Earth, so we are only able to see what occurs fairly close to the ground. Early attempts at studying the nature of the atmosphere used clues from the weather, the beautiful multi-colored sunsets and sunrises, and the twinkling of stars. With the use of sensitive instruments from space, we are able to get a better view of the functioning of our atmosphere. Everything one earth is supported by the atmosphere, solar energy, and our plaent’s magnetic field. The atmosphere absorbs the energy from the Sun, recycles water and other chemicals, and works with the electrical and magnetic forces to provide a moderate climate. The atmosphere also protects us from high-energy radiation and the frigid vacuum of space. The envelope of gas surrounding the Earth changes from the ground up. Four distinct layers have been identified using thermal characteristics (temperature changes), chemical composition, movement, and density (http//liftoff.msfc.nasa.gov/academy/space/atmosphere.html).

A meteorologist job is try to predict what the weather will be. They use all kinds of equipment to come up with this data. Hundreds of thousands of pieces of data are collected every day from weather stations, radiosondes, satellites, and observers. To process this amount of information requires ever more powerful computers to perform the millions of calculations per second needed to model and predict the worlds ever changing weather. The mathematics of weather forecasting are very complex. Surprisingly, most information about the weather is collected by small automated land-based weather stations around the world. This has, to a large extent, replaced networks of observers around the country. Often these weather stations are similar to one you might find in a home or school garden. They are housed in a Stevenson screen or box which shelters the measuring instruments from direct sunlight and rain, whilst allowing air to flow freely. Some are still visited by observers who copy the information down by hand. One helpful devise is satellite. Satellite-derived data helps improve the accuracy of weather forecasts. The information and pictures we can get help us to understand how weather works. They also help us to anticipate weather events better for example, hurricane warnings (http//www.bbc.co.uk/weather/features/basics_fronts.shtml.

The pattern of a weather system is not consistent because the weather is constantly changing. Air masses and accompanying fronts do not remain stationary for long. Although their movements are never exactly the same, they do exhibit some patterns that help meteorologists and others predict the weather. The boundary between two air masses is called a front. As a result, moving fronts indicate a change in the weather. On a weather map fronts are drawn where there is a large change in temperature and a shift in wind direction. A front can also be described as the boundary between adjacent Highs with different conditions

(http//vathena.arc.nasa.gov/curric/weather/hsweathr/patterns.html).

In conclusion, understanding the earth and its atmosphere is very important for the future of this planet. It is critical that we as individuals in society start taking care of this planet by reducing pollution and recycling so that the next generation can live in a healthy environment.

Organizational Analysis of the YWCA

I. Introduction

a. The Young Women’s Christian Association states its mission as the following “The YWCA of the United States of America is a women’s membership movement nourished by its roots in the Christian faith and sustained by the richness of many beliefs and values. Strengthened by diversity, the Association draws together members who strive to create opportunities for women’s growth, leadership and power in order to attain a common vision peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all people” (YWCA Mission). The Richmond branch of the YWCA strives to empower women, children, and families through their current programs addressing family violence, sexual assault, and homelessness.

b. The YWCA currently employs 65 part-time and full-time staff. In addition to the staff, the YWCA utilizes many volunteers and interns to assist the agency in providing various services to women and children in the community. The agency is located in a newly renovated building on 5th Avenue in downtown Richmond. The building is comprised of four levels that have been built to accommodate those with physical disabilities. When entering the edifice, one is located on the first floor that houses the secretary, two conference rooms, the gymnasium, and the only two enclosed offices of the Executive Director and the Assistant Executive Director. The basement is a newly constructed children’s center. This location includes several classrooms, a computer room, and a cafeteria. The second floor consists of a break room for the staff, an art room designed for the children, and a large play area that the children partake in many activities including riding tricycles to taking their naps. The third floor contains cubicles that house the student unit, the rest of the full-time and part-time staff (excluding childcare workers), three private rooms for the purpose of counseling services, and a large room utilized for support group meetings. The entire agency atmosphere produces an environment that is conducive to feelings of support, comfort, and an overall sense of openness. This is demonstrated by not only the structure and design itself, but by the employees staffed at the YWCA. Please refer to Figure 1.1 for an organizational chart of the agency.

c. The YWCA offers a variety of services to women, children, and families located in the Richmond community. For example, the agency maintains two twenty-four hour crisis hotlines operated by crisis hotline specialists and has two confidential emergency shelters for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The two shelters are located in the Richmond and Chesterfield areas that each can accommodate twenty women and children. The shelters provide individual and group counseling for women and their children, case management services, employment and legal assistance and childcare for victims of domestic violence, and serve as temporary emergency shelter for victims of sexual assault. The main office, located on 5th street, provides individual short-term crisis counseling for women, men, and adolescents who are victims. In addition, group counseling is available for victims of domestic violence with a concurrent group for their children. Groups are also available for adults and teenagers who are victims of sexual assault. Furthermore, a trained volunteer or staff member is available 4-hours a day to meet sexual assault clients at the hospital emergency room to provide support and information. Another example of the services provided by the YWCA is the childcare program implemented for low and no income families. The YWCA Children’s Center is the only source of free childcare for families living in area homeless shelters. As one of Richmond’s largest Head Start sites, the YWCA serves over sixty preschoolers each day with comprehensive programming (YWCA Children’s Center). After school and during the summer, homeless and low-income children enjoy field trips, homework assistance, and educational activities in a safe, nurturing environment. Last, but certainly not least, the YWCA provides educational programs on the issues of domestic violence, sexual assault, and healthy relationships for organizations, businesses, prisons, schools and youth groups.

d. The YWCA serves women, children, and families of all ages, races, and income levels. Specifically, the agency serves any and all primary or secondary victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. The majority of the client population lives in the Greater Richmond area. However, clients are welcome from any location. Moreover, the agency serves the children of no and low-income

families.

II. Theory

a. The political economy model, as presented in Hutchinson (1), reflects the organizational theory that best applies to the YWCA. This model focuses on the dependence of an agency on environment resources in its ability to function and provide appropriate and necessary services to the community (Hutchinson, 1). Specifically, the political economy model addresses two main resources necessary for such organizations (1) political resources and () economic resources (Hutchinson, 1). The interplay of these two sources results in the overall operation of the agency. It is also important to note that this model recognizes clients as a potential resource for advocacy and power in the political arena (Hutchinson, 1).

b. The YWCA is a non-profit organization that depends on both political and economic resources to fund the agency. Therefore, the actions of the political arena directly effect the operations of the YWCA. If the government officials in power have elected to campaign for issues concerning domestic violence and sexual assault, the YWCA can ultimately benefits from such interactions and attention. Often, when political figures get involved in advocating for domestic violence, private donators become more aware of the need for such services provided by the YWCA. This awareness is a potential avenue to raise donations for the agency. Moreover, political figures make the decisions concerning federal and state laws. These political resources provide potential for additional granting and funds for the organization. In addition, several large organizations and businesses, including United Way and Capital One, provide funding for the YWCA. These funds are accompanied with expectations and obligations by such businesses. Therefore, they claim power over what type of services and programming they would prefer to fund. The YWCA is directly affected by their major contributors in that fashion, often creating limitations for the organization. However, the agency depends on these resources to operate effectively and efficiently. A number of other funds and grants are needed to run the YWCA. Whether or not these grants are approved on a yearly basis, seriously affects the clients, community, and the staff. For example, one part-time staff member was recently dismissed from her position because the grant the agency needed to continue funding her position was lost. As a result, they lost the only staff member that ran the Teen Advocacy Program. Since her departure, the YWCA has had to cancel over thirty scheduled teen public education seminars. Due to the political economy model, these types of decisions are often the result of the interplay between political and economic interest. The YWCA had no other feasible options, because of economic resources, other than to eliminate her position within the organization.

III. Critique

a. The YWCA performs poorly under the political economy model. Unfortunately, due to the nature of a non-profit organization, these conflicts will always be an issue and effect the organization on some level. Because the YWCA is so heavily dependent on political and economic resources, it is not always possible to provide efficient and effective services to clients, nor is there always the possibility of implementing additional programs the community addresses as needs. It is also important to reflect on the aforementioned staff member who was dismissed due to lack of funding. Now that her position is eliminated, the Teen Advocacy Program has no available staff to take her place resulting in the elimination of a community educational program. Therefore, this indicates a lack of efficiency and effectiveness to service those potential client populations. Moreover, the lack of government and overall funding is causing the agency to collapse positions together resulting in staffing patterns that are inappropriate the services being provided. For example, the Director of Domestic Violence has additionally been assigned the position and responsibility of Director of Community Outreach. She is not only handing an abundance of individual domestic violence clients, but is now responsible for follow-up and outreach counseling in the community. It would be impossible for her to adequately, efficiently, and effectively serve each client to the best of her ability. Unfortunately, many of the other staff members are encountering the same problems and issues. Another example are the childcare workers. They often have more children in their care than they can feasibly manage. In addition, they are not trained appropriately to provide the necessary services to the population of children. The problem here arises in the issues of salary. The YWCA cannot afford to hire qualified individuals in their childcare programs. As a result, the programs offered to these children are not performing to their highest expectations. As a whole, there are not enough people within the organization to accomplish the expectations given to them on a daily basis. This could, and probably is, affecting the way clients are being served at the agency. However, there does seem to be a common understanding among management and line staff within each program about problems, populations to be served, services to be provided, and client outcomes to be achieved. The problem arises when such needs, issues, and problems are not being met. Most of the issues concerning efficiency and effectiveness of the YWCA stems from the political and economic resources the organizations depends on for its existence. On a more positive note, the YWCA does utilize their clients as resources in the political arena. Often, the clients return to collaborate with the YWCA on political issues. Together they advocate for new governmental policies and regulations. These collaborations have proven to be effective process for change.

b. The contingency theory should be considered as a possible model that might prove to be effective for the YWCA. This theory states that there is no “one best way” to organize (Hutchinson, 1). It maintains that flexibility within the organization is key to identifying and adapting to the changing environment. Since the YWCA is consistently redefining issues of importance within the community, a more flexible theory would assist in the organization of the agency. However, the failure to recognize the strong influences of political and economic forces regarding the agency may ultimately be a limitation.
