Speeding Ticket

You always get the unexpected. Its extraordinary how bad situations pop out of no where. My situation is a speeding ticket that was close to ending my driving privilege. Stress that I had caused me to rush and speed didn’t make me think twice of the consequences that I could be getting close to. But I had to face what was coming towards me.

It all started when I was heading to the movie theatre after picking up my girlfriend. The movie started at 0 and she had to be home by one o’clock. It took us about a solid 50 minutes to get there since she lives far away from everything. So I was thinking there would be no problem at all; we go watch the movie and then go back home from there. While watching the movie, I didn’t realize how much time passed by. It was a three-hour movie. While we were walking out of the movie we checked the time and saw that we had only thirty minutes to get to her house on time.

Quickly as possible we got out of the movie theatre and into the car. The only thought running through my mind was that I have to get her home right away. There were no cars on the road, which made me want to accelerate the speed more. I was approaching a hill. After going over car lights appeared from the side of the road. Then blue lights were turned on and I slowed down, praying he wasn’t coming for me. I passed a 45 speed limit sign and I didn’t notice how fast I was going because all I was thinking is that my girlfriend has to be on time. My heart was beating so fast and I was so nervous I couldn’t think right.

The cop pulled me over and gave me a ticket. He explained that I went thirty miles per hour over the speed limit, which he could have taken my driving privilege away for a long time he said, but he didn’t. He told me going that fast you could lose your life. He let us go and we were already ten minutes late. The rest of the way to her house we were going exactly with what the speed limit was. After dropping her off and speaking to her parents about what happened I couldn’t stop thinking about my parent’s reaction after they hear the news.

I waited till the next day to break the bad news to them. My parents told me it would cost me around four hundred dollars to take care of the ticket. That is when I started to panic. That meant I had to work more hours and days. All of this chaos for trying to be on time which wouldn’t have cost me anything.

After two weeks it was all over. No more worries, money problems, or drama. I never stopped thinking about everything that could have happened. It’s so crucial. We could have been hurt or even killed if I would have gotten in a wreck at the speed I was going. Always think about the situation before you dig a deeper hole than what you already have. One more thing, its always better to be late than sorry.

In your opinion, is ‘The Merchant of Venice’ an anti-Semitic play?

In the course of your answer, explain clearly how Shakespeare presents Christians and Jews and comment on what the play suggests about prejudice and religious values.

The Merchant of Venice focuses a great deal on religion because it is at the centre of the whole story. Shylock (a Jew) lends money to Antonio (a Christian) and this is from where the whole problem arises and where the story begins. Neither Jew or Christian really want to do business with each other but because of the situation in Venice at the time, Jews tended to be the only money lenders so Antonio did not have a choice if he wanted to help Bassanio he had to borrow money from Shylock. Because of the “ancient grudge” between the Christians and the Jews and the fact that Shylock felt very hard done by by the Christians because of the way they treated him, he decided to use his position as the money lender to get his revenge on Antonio and demand a pound of flesh if he could not pay back the money.

“If I can catch him once upon the hip, I will feed fat the ancient grudge I bear him.”

Help with essay on In your opinion, is ‘The Merchant of Venice’ an anti-Semitic play? In the course of your answer, explain clearly how Shakespeare presents Christians and Jews and comment on what the play suggests about prejudice and religious values.

The Jews and Christians have a mutual hate for one another purely based on race and both treat each other with utter contempt and would go out of their way to hurt each other just to prove a point. The Christians spit on the Jews and call them dogs and devils and the Jews lend Christians money but charge them high rates of interest and possibly ask for forfeits not unlike the one Shylock demands from Antonio.

“You call me misbeliever, cut-throat dog, And spit upon my Jewish gaberdine, And all for use of that which is mine own.”

Shakespeare presents the Jews in a very stereotypical way, especially Shylock. He is greedy, mercenary, spiteful and uncaring and has very few likeable qualities. He is completely evil and shows no mercy at all and when his daughter leaves him, he cares more about the money she stole from him than he does about losing her.

But, instead of making the Christians the complete opposite of the Jews, he also gives them some undesirable qualities, some which are not unlike the typical characteristics of the Jews. Portia, Antonio and Bassanio are all quite mercenary, shallow and greedy and are not even merciful at the trial when casting sentence on Shylock, and mercy is what they claim sets them apart from the Jews. The “Christian” qualities, which they all claim to have, are not there. This is what makes me think that Shakespeare did not intend the play to be anti-Semitic. If he did, then the Christians would not be so much like the Jews and they would be more like “typical Christians.” Instead, we see that characters such as Antonio, Portia and Bassanio believe that they act like true Christians but in fact, they act little better than their enemies. Antonio even admits to treating Shylock badly and says that he would be happy to do it again and still calls himself a true Christian.

“I am as like to call thee so again, To spit on thee again, to spurn thee too.”

Shylock then agrees to lend Antonio the money and Antonio replies;

“The Hebrew will turn Christian, he grows kind.”

Antonio says this implying that only Christians are kind but the only kind thing that Antonio does in the play is lend Bassanio the money, and one could argue that he even did this for selfish reasons, to buy Bassanio’s love. He has very few, typical Christian traits but still uses the fact that he is a Christian to persecute the Jews. Shylock even has reasonable excuse for wanting revenge on the Christians because Jews believe in an eye for an eye as a policy for revenge, as that is what it says in the bible, and he has been treated very badly by the Christians. This is another reason why I do not believe that Shakespeare intended the Merchant of Venice to be an anti- Semitic play. He has given us too much reason to think badly of the Christians and feel sorry for Shylock and the other Jews. The fact that the Christians force Shylock to convert at the end of the play shows the audience just how evil and unmerciful the Christians can be and we sympathise with Shylock more than with them. Shakespeare would not have left us feeling sympathetic towards Shylock if he had intended the play to be anti-Semitic. The Christians would have been merciful and we would be left thinking that Shylock got away lightly with what he had done but been left in awe at the endless mercy and kindness of the Christians. Instead, we are left thinking that Shylock was a bit hard done by and that the Christians were not very Christian and merciful. This is why I do not believe that Shakespeare intended the play to be anti-Semitic.

Before we start any process of negotiation, there are a number of basic principles to remember

You are the one who uses the tools, so you must know how to use them best.

The other side also uses the same mechanisms, both as tools of information and from an intuitive point of view. Because of this you must learn the means which can be used by the opposing side.

Help with essay on ibm mission statement and vision statement

Work in an automatic fashion. This will make it easier to act rationally and cope with your own emotional reactions. You will then be able to use the tactics required and react in the most advantageous way.

Commercial negotiations start from the moment you meet the other side. They are not limited by time boundaries within which it has been announced that the negotiations will now be officially done.

There are rules of negotiation, just as there are for a game of chess. There is no guarantee that the other side knows or follows the rules, but research studies have shown that they usually behave as expected. It is for this reason that we can relate to negotiation as a scientific process, not a creative one. Chess players practice regularly. If they do not practice, their skill decreases, especially when their level of expertise is high. You cannot let your negotiation skills rust; you must read articles and books and keep practicing.

Effective negotiations focus on producing a Win Win situation, the meaning of which is a situation in which both sides are pleased with the results. You must remember that in the process of negotiation, the goal is to win the majority of outlined conditions for long term mutual satisfaction and cooperation.

Before you start, check that you have not forgotten the following elements

1. a powerful desire to be one of the participants and partners in the action

. behaving with respect and humility in all discussions

. patience and composure

4. a real commitment to the organization of which you are a member

5. preparation, an in-depth understanding of the situation, and knowledge

6. prepared alternatives

7. clear strategies, tactics, and objectives

In your opinion, what are the most important reasons international business negotiations fail? Explain your reasoning for each one.

avoiding making the initial suggestion This causes the other side to make the first suggestion. When you need more information or when their suggestion is better than you expected, this could be an advantage. Listening to their stand does make it possible for you to think and react in a more suitable, informed way, and that too, can be an advantage. You will be able to make a suggestion which lies between the two extremes. However, not being willing to offer a suggestion can stall the entire process and lead to failure.

thinking that signing the agreement is the end of the process signing is the completion of the negotiation and the beginning of the next stage. Thinking that all that is needed is a signature, can lead to highly emotional crisies and irrational behaviors, even cancellation of the agreement.

losing your cool or withdrawing from the negotiations the negotiations can be postponed or fail either because they must replace you or because their emotional response is to stop the process.

misinterpretation or failure to accept and relate to the practices and attitudes of the other side cultural values, traditions and norms are different and all the diversities can make the process of negotiation difficult.

different goals objectives may be misunderstood, again, a cultural difference which can stop the process right at the beginning.

take it or leave it attitude this is a guaranteed recipe for failure. Negative attitudes, closed minds, and unwillingness to look for compromise all can bring failure.

When negotiations take a very long time, one of the following situations can occur

impasse lack of agreement on one issue. It is possible to continue the talks and avoid discussing the one issue which is the problem. This may or may not work.

stalemate this is a situation in which both sides continue to talk, but they do not advance toward any solution.

deadlock a deadlock is a situation in which no further advance is possible. This does not occur often, but when it does, the only possible way out is to bring in a facilitator or negotiator and to accept his final decisions.

In your opinion, what are the most important reasons international business

negotiations are successful? Explain your reasoning for each one.

all successful negotiations start by building trust Trust is based on reliable communications, honesty, and a feeling of shared goals.

friendly tactics Business negotiations are not conducted between organizations. They are conducted between people. Respect shown on both sides for both sides will achieve success.

presentation of data which shows interest The preparation of papers and graphs showing the advantages of your proposals, for example, comparing your ideas with the competition, are often more convincing than statements that are made vocally.

undermine their confidence Presenting the disadvantages of their proposal or referring to some deficiency on their side, as long as there is no personal attack, can improve the chance of success.

experience communication in the international business world is quicker and easier than it ever was. More and more business managers negotiate deals. The experience they gain helps them learn how to make the next negotiation successful.

awareness and better understanding of non-verbal communication Body language is often more important than the words which are spoken. Knowledge of non-verbal communication, both what you project and what is projected by the other side, improve the chance of success.

flexibility Adherence to plans and goals is important, but not so important that you cannot afford to be flexible. Being capable of lowering demands a little or compromising bring about success.

end the negotiations with friendly handshake successful negotiations beget more successful negotiations. Remembering to close in an amicable and cordial way will help maintain good relations.

My friends often ask me the same questions ¡°Why do you prefer going to Canada for a bachelor degree since you are already a sophomore in China? Haven¡¯t you found it is a waste of time?¡± At that moment, I really do not know what I should reply. How can you explain to others before sufficiently persuading yourself? However, after reading this poem, I believe the answer has become clearer¡ª¡ªwe can not choose both roads. In other words, no one could escape from making choices, probably because we are human-beings.

As a matter of fact, many students in my country intend to finish their undergraduate programs, although they are not quite interested in them. On the one hand, there are a lot of realistic factors related to job-hunting, which we have to consider primarily; on the other hand, due to the education system we are required to declare our majors before enrolling in a university, and as well we are not permitted to change majors or departments. Thus under those circumstances, not a few students, like me, feel regret for what we are learning currently. But compared with them, I am lucky¡ª¡ªfor I have the financial support from my parents, admission to Saint Mary¡¯s University and acceptance of a one-year visa¡.

Go back to this poem, one thing that echoes to me is the line ¡°I doubted if I should ever come back.¡± But what I suspect is not returning to China at the halfway point. Instead, it is doubtful whether I can adapt to Canadian life style; it is uncertain whether I can manage my studies in Saint Mary¡¯s University; also, it is a question whether I will achieve a better future in my career after graduation.

Furthermore, I cannot stop asking myself¡ª¡ªis it really good fortune for me to come to Canada? No one knows, perhaps. It is only if we drink the wine that we can tell its flavor. Let us take Frost as an example. In front of the ¡°two roads diverged in a yellow wood¡±, he ¡°took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.¡± Listening to the speaker, it is not difficult to understand how satisfied he is for his final choice. And just these words have inspired me to establish confidence in the future, even made me feel pride about my own decision. I hope someday when looking back at my life in Canada I will say it has made ¡°all the difference¡±.

Managerial problems, such as the case study, stem from a range of hidden problems within the company.

These range from lack of company policy, ill communication, lack of knowledge regarding diversity in the workplace, poor training on solving problems rationally. Diversity is a key issue in the ninetys workplace because of the mosaic of people within a broad range of age groups, diverse backgrounds, with different skills, needs and expectations. Fritz, the supervisor had made a personal agreement with Gary regarding working on Saturdays. Fritz recognised the importance of religion to Gary, and that if Gary’s need was satisfied ideally his work would be more productive. Gary displayed his commitment to his work by working Saturdays when necessary, as well as his appreciation by offering to work Sundays at Saturday rates. Fritz failed to inform employee relations, and later , Phil, of this agreement. Phil felt his authority was threatened when Gary refused his request to work the following Saturday. Gary, when pushed by Phil, became defensive and not surprisingly refused to work. Suzy was requested to aid in the discussion, but she was not all supportive with the suggestion to fire Gary. This problem may reach its optimal outcome by following a rational problem solving guide as well as investigating how to manage diversity in the workplace.

Workplace diversity is obviously a key issue in this case study. To manage workplace diversity efficiently means creating an inclusive environment that values and utilises the contributions of people of different backgrounds, experiences and perspectives. Diversity relates to a range of variants such as age, gender, ethnicity, religious belief, cultural background, sexual orientation, language and family background. It also incorporates other aspects such as education level, work experience, socio-economic background, personality profile, marital status, geographic location, and whether or not one has carer responsibilities. In reference to the case study this means that the workplace structures, systems and procedures need to assist employees to balance their work and family responsibilities effectively. Vast diversity has produced positive and negative consequences. Diversity sometimes threatens harmony and understanding, as well as co-operation and productivity. However positive results of diversity include increased creativity, enhanced productivity through collaborative problem solving and synergy with multilevel experience sharing. Successful management of diversity in the workplace involves a range of employment practises such as job-sharing, part time work, flexitime and other flexible practices so individuals can manage their family and other commitments alongside their work commitments.

To begin, it is important to seek a plan of action on how to solve the problem. In assessing the problem following Whetten’s flowchart, it is a problem able to be solved rationally rather than creatively. The outcomes are predictable, there appears to be sufficient information present and the means-ends connection is relatively clear. Rational problem solving is only useful when the problems are relatively straightforward, alternatives are readily available and when a clear standard of judgement exists against which to judge the correctness of a solution. This falls into the category of “computational problems” of which the main tasks are to gather information, generate alternatives and make an informed choice. However the case study is not strictly a “computational problem”, as it involves the complex task of managing diversity.

Custom writing service can write essays on Managerial problems - lack of company policy, ill communication, lack of knowledge regarding diversity in the workplace, poor training on solving problems rationally.

The first priority is to define the problem and specify underlying causes. These appear to be Fritz’s failure to communicate with the relevant people about his agreement with Gary, resulting in Gary being underpaid for his work on Sundays. Fritz has followed the natural tendency to select the first reasonable solution that comes to mind Whetten citing March and Simon 158). Phil has not acknowledged the importance of religion to Gary. Suzy , as an employee relations officer does not appear to be well trained. Suzy’s offering of advice that “we could fire him if we wanted to...” highlights her lack of knowledge in this area. Suzy definitely needs diversity training. Diversity training teaches people to respect and respond to the diverse requirement and needs of different individuals.

It needs to be examined why Gary should be allowed time off for religion. Gary’s desire to practise his religion needs to be supported by the company. Hereit (et al. 1715, cited in Fulop 1 84) research in the UK of the ideals that both employees and organisational representatives deemed to be the “organisational obligations.” Both the employee and organisational group believed that “Need - allowing time off to meet personal or family needs” are of importance, and had similar statistics of 5.77% and 4.88% respectively. This highlights the need for Gary to practise his religion, which appears to play a large role in his life. It is therefore not surprising that Gary, when questioned by Phil, was not willing to be flexible, nor maintain his commitment about working the following Saturday. This could be described as a “Violation.” (Fulop 1; 86 citing Morrison and Robinson 17; 0 -1.) Fulop defines violation as “ the emotional or affective state or experience that can also accompany one’s belief that there has been a failure by the organisation to fulfil a psychological contract.” According to Morrison and Robinson, “violation creates feelings that involve disappointment, frustration and distress stemming from the perceived failure to receive something.” It is therefore a high priority that Gary not be left feeling violated, in order to be a productive member of the company.

The consistency of company policy needs to be monitored more closely. Gary had discovered that a relative of the same religion, an executive in the same company had reached some type of agreement to allow him to practise his religion on Saturdays. This agreement had actually been made to make it easier for Gary’s uncle to have access to his religion. To Gary it may appear that his Uncle received special treatment because he was an executive, and Gary’s desire not treated as important because he is a process engineer.

The second step in rational problem solving is to generate alternative solutions. This would involve a meeting with Phil, Fritz, Gary and Suzy, with ideally all parties suggesting alternatives that are consistent with the goals that Gary still be employed, have access to his religion and complete all work. Short term and long term alternatives must be discussed. It is important to consider that Gary is an inexperienced trainee who currently needs more time for planning. Therefore in the long term will not need as much time for efficient planning and as a result not required to work as much on weekends. However in the short term he will still be required to do so. Although the arrangement will have to allow for both the long and short term solutions.

A solution needs to be evaluated and the alternative selected. Gary needs to practise his religion and should not be disadvantaged because the day of worship is a Saturday. It is important to remember that calendars are based upon the Christian and Catholic religion, which recognises Sunday of a day of rest and worship. Continuing on that note, the company should agree to allow Gary to have the majority of Saturdays off. If he has not completed the planning for the week, he should be given the opportunity to complete it on Sundays. However, if Gary will need the whole weekend to complete his work, if absolutely necessary, Gary will need to work on a Saturday. This should not exceed one Saturday a month, thereby still allowing Gary the majority of Saturdays off. This policy of allowing time off for religious and family needs should be extended for all within the company whether it be executives or process engineers. It is a priority that the company show flexibility for issues of personal importance such as religion. Suzy, in employee relations will need to be informed of the decision in order to use this case as a precedent. She would benefit from more training on diversity and in general improving employee relations. The main effects of this decision may be that Gary works overtime during the week , or harder to complete his planning on time. This could in fact be an incentive. It is to be hoped that Gary will feel pleased with this decision and remain loyal and committed to the company. As a result of these feelings will work obliging on Saturdays when necessary. Phil will perhaps be somewhat annoyed at this decision, but he may need to revise his view of diversity, and policies to ensure a committed and positive workplace. The side effects will be that Gary earns double rates for Sundays rather than one and half rates for Saturdays, therefore earns a higher salary. Another side effect is perhaps more employees will request more leave for religion or family needs. This is part of improving the management of diversity, by acknowledging and accommodating these needs.

The final step in rational problem solving is to implement and follow up on solution. The solution should be discussed with Suzy, Gary, Phil and Fritz.. Fritz has agreed to work the next Saturday , and the solution should be brought in for the following week. Everyone involved should be given opportunities for feedback. Perhaps scheduling a meeting a month later to discuss whether or not the solution is proving effective, and suggestions for any improvements. An improved method of communication, and consistency of company policy should also be investigated. It is a good idea that the company review all of its policies in regard to diversity management. This involves a commitment from top management downwards with a spectrum of initiatives such as diversity training programs, employee support groups, recognising and allowing for family and religious needs, communication standards, and perhaps even a manager accountable for diversity management success within the company.

The management of diversity in the workplace is by no means easy and straight forward. However with communication and understanding diversity can intervene in situations involving potential discrimination, such as the case study of Gary. Gary’s need to practise his religion needed to be acknowledged, and his workload flexible to allow him to pursue this whilst still maintaining his commitment to the company. Diversity management involves commitment and support for flexible practices and approaches to working which respond to the various needs of working individuals. It is to be hoped that the solution would serve as an example of recognition and support of diversity. By which it is enabling individuals to make full use of diverse talents, work schedules and experiences they bring with them to the workplace.

EVERYDAY USE

By Alice Walker

“Everyday Use,” written by Alice Walker, is a short story in which the use of imagery combined with characterization allows the readers to dive deep into the story, perhaps detecting hints in to what the characters are feeling or thinking. These methods prove successful in portraying how two characters, Maggie and Mama, psychologically confined themselves, thus resulting in submissive attitudes towards their intimidating and educated sister/daughter, Dee.

The story takes place in the past, probably around the mid-late 100’s. In a old run down house live a mother, Mama, and daughter, Maggie, of African American descent. A poor family, they live a simple life and are people of faith. Mama has another daughter, Dee, who was sent away to be educated at an early age. Dee being pretty, superficial, and snobbish likes to belittle her mother and sister who are neither educated nor pleasing to the eye. Maggie is homely and badly scarred from being burned in a fire, which leaves her envious of her beautiful sister. Dee comes back one day to “visit” and asks her mother for an heirloom quilt that has already been promised to her sister. Maggie, who is used to seeing Dee get her way, is stunned when her mother denies Dee the quilt.

Through Mama, the narrator, Walker uses characterization to share Mama’s observations of her daughter Maggie. From this it is easy to see what kind of person Maggie is and how she might perceive herself. Details shared throughout the story tell that Maggie’s self-image is one of negativity, which explains why she is always cowering and hiding herself in shame. Mama observes her poise while in her sister’s presence; “She will stand hopelessly in corners homely and ashamed of the burn scars down her arms and legs.” (Walker p.6). One can only imagine the effect of having burn scars and what it can do to one’s self esteem. It is also stated, “she stood there with her scarred hands hidden in the folds of her skirt.” (p. 70). Maggie’s posture and poise is one of doubt. “She has been like this, chin on chest, eyes on ground, feet in shuffle, ever since the fire that burned the other house to the ground.” (p.64).

The imagery used by the author the create Maggie starts with her red skirt. After reading about the fire she had been involved with earlier in the story, it is obvious that the red represents the flames that brushed upon Maggie’s body leaving behind a painting of scars. Then comes the pink blouse, pink may represent sweet, calm, and innocence, all of which as we get to know Maggie fit together with her personality.

As with Maggie’s character, the author uses characterization to create Mama as well. What is told about Mama is only her description of herself. Her self-image, like Maggie’s, is one of negativity. She describes herself as being uneducated, manly, and fat. She realizes that Dee would like her to be just the opposite of what she is but, “in real life [she is a] large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands” (p.64). The use of imagery comes back into play here with Mama’s rough man-working hands. Although Mama states straight out that she is not educated, it is also apparent through her vocabulary and the questions she contemplates to herself. Sentences such as, “That’s make them last better,” and “If that’s what you want us to call you, we’ll call you,” are indications of where she stands educationally. Through imagery and characterization it is apparent that Mama has a poor self image.

Though both Mama and Maggie show signs of resentment toward Dee, they remain intimidated by Dee’s sophisticated and educated persona. They allow Dee to manipulate and belittle them, all the while beating them with her intelligence. The main paragraph that Mama shows resentment towards Dee is seen here

“She would read to us without pity; forcing words, lies, other folks’ habits, whole lives upon us two, sitting trapped and ignorant underneath her voice. She washed us in a river of make-believe, burned us with a lot of knowledge we didn’t necessarily need to know. Pressed us to her with the serious way she read, to shove us away at just the moment, like dimwits, we seemed about to understand.” (p.64)

Mama’s submissive attitude is shown through her actions. While Dee is seizing particular items around the house Mama just watches, “When [Dee] finished wrapping the dasher the handle stuck out. I took it for a moment in my hands You didn’t even have to look close to see where hands pushing the dasher up and down to make butter had left a kind of sink in the wood.”(p.68). These words reveal that Mama cares about this particular item and maybe she doesn’t want to part with it, but her submissive side can’t say, “no!” to her daughter Dee.

Maggie’s resentment toward Dee is portrayed through Mama’s observation as stated here, “[Maggie] thinks her sister has held life always in the palm of one hand, that ‘no’ is a word the world never learned to say to her.”’(p.6). Or it may also be depicted by the way she looks at Dee “…eyeing her sister with a mixture of envy and awe.” (p.6). She is also heard making gasping sounds at the sight of Dee. Not likely gasps of happiness since the narrator describes them as the sound one might make when seeing “…the wriggling end of a snake.”

The way she cowers and hides in the background may represent Maggie’s submissive attitude. Her presence in the room may be hardly noticed. She is described as “cowering behind,” “hidden behind the door,” and lurking “back in the kitchen over the dishpan.” Even when she speaks in the presence of others her tone of voice is such that “you almost couldn’t hear her” (p.68). Towards the end of the story when Dee asks for the quilt Maggie says, “She can have them, Mama” even though Maggie knows they are rightfully hers.

At the end of the story Mama releases herself from her psychological confinement by doing “…something [she] had never done before,” she was able to say, “no,” and take a stand to her antagonistic daughter Dee. At this point her daughter does not intimidate her, and her intuition is screaming that the quilt belongs with Maggie. After Dee storms off it seems Mama and Maggie are left with a sort of gratification in themselves as the narrator ends the story describing what they did after Dee left, “And then the two of us sat there just enjoying, until it was time to go in the house and go to bed.”(p.70).

In conclusion, Walker’s brilliant use of imagery and characterization is very abundant, leaving many aspects of the story, which may be explored. The use of color and great description allows one to discover the different personalities of the characters.

The main theme of the story is that a person’s heritage is to be valued and cherished, not exhibited.

The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by the American author Harper Lee, is about how society kills innocence with evil. The setting of the book takes place in the 150?s, where racism was a big deal to society. Throughout the novel, Lee uses a mockingbird as a analogy to the characters, which makes the title so convenient to the novel. If we were to view a bird?s world, blue jays would be viewed as the bullies. They are loud, territorial, and aggressive. The blue jays represent the prejudice ?bullies? in Maycomb and society. The mockingbird is a symbol for two of the characters in the novel Boo (Arthur) Radley and Tom Robinson. The mockingbird symbolizes these two character because they do not have their own songs. Whereas, the blue jay is loud and obnoxious, the mockingbird only sings other birds songs. If a mockingbird does not sing its own song, we characterize it only by what the other birds sing. We see the mockingbird through the other birds. In the novel, the people of Maycomb only know Boo Radley and Tom Robinson by what others say about them. These characters do not really have their own ?song? in a sense and are therefore, characterized by other people?s viewpoints.

Boo Radley, one of the well known symbolized mockingbirds, show how a good person can be injured by the evil of mankind. Boo a character who never steps foot outside of his house, nor maintain any relation with the people of Maycomb; causes people to fear him and make up stories about him without even getting a chance to know him. Mainly prejudice like this is what keeps Boo in his house. In the novel, Scout connects Boo with the mockingbird. Mrs. Maudie defines a mockingbird as one who ?don?t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don?t eat up people?s gardens, don?t nest in corncribs, they don?t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. Boo is exactly that. Boo is the person who put a blanket around Scout when it was cold. Boo was the one putting gifts in the tree. Boo even sewed up Jem?s pants when they were tore. Boo was the one who saved their lives. On the contrary to Scout?s primary belief, Boo never harms anyone. Scout also realizes that she wrongfully treated Boo when she thinks about the gifts in the tree. She never gave anything back to Boo, except love at the end. When Scout escorts Arthur home and stands on his front porch, she sees the same street she saw, just from an entirely different perspective. Scout learns

what a Mockingbird is, and who represents one.

Tom Robinson, one of the best examples in the novel of how innocence is destroyed by evil. Tom is a black man who, who the community of Maycomb judge him by the stereotype of black males. On his way home from work, he is often called upon by a young white girl, Mayella Ewell, to help her with her chores. Not because Mayella is white, but because Tom is genuinely and kind, he helps her with her chores. When Mayella shows her affections to Tom, he does not make any effort to physically push her away for her approaches, but instead decides to flee without harming her or Bob Ewell. Later in the story, the honest and helpful Tom is unfairly convicted of rape against Mayella Ewell. By running from the crisis that Mayella put him in, instead of staying and asserting himself, Tom gives the Ewells freedom to make whatever claims they want in court; which causes the stereotypes of black males to cloud the heads of the jury members and citizens, Tom is founded guilty for a crime he didn?t commit.

Before reading To Kill a Mockingbird, the title itself means nothing. The title is the foundation of a house. It is just a slob of cement, and cannot be interpreted. While reading the book, pieces of wood fit together and the house starts to stand up. After reading the book, the house is fully painted and decorated. The landscaping is complete, and the house is beautiful. Several things and people represent the Mockingbird throughout the novel, but Hyper Lee mainly uses Boo Radley and Tom Robinson to represent the symbolic theme. Boo is an outcast in the neighborhood, and Lee is trying to show that every neighborhood has a Boo in it. She shows how Tom is the representative of the outcast in society throughout the United States, therefore showing us that there are Tom Robinson?s in all of our neighborhoods or communities. When Atticus tells Jem and Scout that it is a sin to kill the mockingbird, this refers to the actions directed towards Tom and Boo. It was a sin to dislike Tom and Boo based on what others say about them. They were punished by the people in Maycomb because they did not have their own voice. Lee is trying to explain to her readers that there are many people without their own voice in our society. But, as it is a sin to kill the mockingbird, it is a sin to kill those without a voice. The message of the novel is to stop knocking those people down who do not have a voice. Once again, it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, which is explained in To Kill a Mockingbird. The mockingbird symbolized innocence and purity. To kill a mockingbird is to destroy that innocence.
