Between 104-7, Henri Matisse, Andre Derain and Maurice Vlaminck evolved a style of painting that earned them the name Les Fauves. The Fauve movement was given it’s name when the art critic Louis Vauxcelles was reviewing the Gils Blas at the Salon d’Automne exhibition in 105. He saw a classical sculpture in the centre of an exhibition room filled with fauve paintings by artists such as Derain, Vlaminck and Matisse. The bright arbitrary colours and distorted lines of the Fauvists paintings looked at the time like art by savages. He referred to these paintings as ‘wild beast’ in comparison to the classical sculpture. As a result of the French meaning for wild beast being ‘fauves’ the style was called fauvism. Although there was no common program such as the Impressionist Soci�t� anonyme des peintres, sculpteur et graveur, the Fauves were all loosely joined by a shared rebellion against academicism. For the Fauves the simple act of painting and the joy of painting is at the heart of the paintings.


The Pointillists had a large influence on the Fauves. In the freeing of line and colour from the bonds of realistic description the Fauves looked back to the juxtapositions used by the Pointillists. They incorporated these juxtapositions into the emotionalism that they adopted from the styles of painters such as Vincent van Gogh . Comparing van Gogh’s Self-portrait with shaven head (1888) to Matisse’s Portrait of Andr� Derain (105) one can easily observe the similarities. Both have broken brush strokes, the paint having been applied thickly and in directional patterns. This pattern plays a key part in the creation of a structure in the figures. Van Gogh has highlighted his face by lightening the green background palette close to the face. By contrast Matisse has used two colours, green and blue, in the background. However this has been coarsely applied with vigorous brushstrokes and no attempt to even try to finish it. Amongst other artists that influenced the Fauves Gauguin stands out. He influenced them with his love of painting primitive nature and they copied this by using his decorative values in many of their paintings. Such decorative values can be seen in the key Fauve painting The Joy of Life � Matisse (108). It has been influenced by the way in which he drastically simplified forms, so much so that they become a pure linear pattern unifying the picture surface into a single spatial plane, not without some lingering reminiscences of Art Nouveau.


Colour and the use of colour for expression is at the heart of fauvism. By freeing colour from its traditional descriptive role in representation, the Fauves led the way to its use as an expressive end in itself, showing both an equivalent of reality and their emotional response to reality. Bright dissonant colours are used to express the artist’s emotional response to reality, often using non-representative autonomous colours. The colours are bright and dissonant increasing the harsh and incoherent nature of the paintings.

In the same way that colour is exaggerated for representation, nature is often distorted through the imagination of the artists. Indeed there is an emancipation of style and line, it is a liberation away from classicism, almost portraying the message that Academic Art is no longer needed as society has moved forward and can now express oneself. The artists try to portray this celebration of pleasure in the vivacity of the paintings.


Derrain’s ‘Boats in the Port of Collioure’ (105) is a wonderful and typical example of fauvist painting. It has a primitive Mediterranean fishing scene as its subject. The sky is green and yellow, the hills pink and the foreground mostly pure red, yellow and blue. Derrain has applied paint in various sized blocks, often spaced apart to represent light and allow the colours to interact, and, by doing so gain strength from the contrast of each other. The sunlight influences the shades of colour and the gaps between the ‘dabs’ of paint. One only need look at the sea in the painting to see how the areas affected by the sunlight are green where as the rest of the sea is blue. The areas where the sun reflects on the water have large spaces between the ‘dabs’ of paint revealing the white base layer of the canvas. Although the colours are non-representational, their colour represents the objects intensity in relation to other objects. A result is that the grass/beach in the foreground is red and the background hills pink. The colours do not represent nature, instead provide a painterly equivalent to reality.


Matisse was one of the other great fauves. Similarly to Derrain, he painted at Collioure. His painting ‘Interior at Collioure’ (105) depends on the conjunction of red, pink and green, as well as blue and orange. Matisse’s tendency to juxtapose of complimentary colours is supposed to enhance the colours and make the eye think that the colours are vibrating and thus affect the eye more. Despite this, space through the painting can be observed, (though not with traditional use of perspective) and it is easy to tell the interior and exterior light apart.


The main theme of fauvism seems to be the juxtaposition of colours so that they represent the view of the artist and create a vibrancy in the colours.It is the artists assault on classical reality.

Commercial banks are considered to be the largest group of depository institutions when measured by asset size; they are very distinguishable from savings institutions and credit unions in the size, regulation and composition of their loans and deposits. Commercial banks have two main assets on their balance sheet; loans and investment securities. Due to the high levels of liquidity risk for commercial banks, they usually hold large amounts of cash and investment securities in order to meet the claims of their liability customers, upon liquidation. In the event of loan default the losses are charged off against the bank equity, thus reducing retained earnings and the equity of the bank.


Commercial banks have two main sources of funds, deposits and borrowed money, which are represented as liabilities on their balance sheet. Deposit accounts are comprised of four major sections; non-transaction accounts and transaction accounts, which include the sum of non-interest bearing demand deposits and interest bearing checking accounts, make up the first section. A second section is retail or household savings and time deposits; normally these are individual account holdings of less than one- hundred dollars. Large time deposits in excess of one hundred dollars make up the third section; these are usually negotiable certificates of deposit that can be sold in the secondary market to outside investors. A final section is nondeposit liabilities, which include instruments such as repurchase agreements and federal fund purchases. When examining a commercial bank balance sheet an interesting aspect that distinguishes them from other financial institutions is their high debt to assets ratio, which implies that a very large amount assets is funded by debt, either being deposits or borrowed funds.

Prior to this act banks had been subject to a ceiling on the level of interest paid to depositors. With the elimination of this ceiling interest rates became a major selling point, thus increasing competition among banks.


With commercial banks mainly focusing on the needs of businesses, thrift institutions were introduced in the early 1800’s to serve the needs of individuals wanting to purchase homes. There are three main types of thrift institutions savings associations, savings banks, and credit unions.


Savings associations and savings banks specialize in real estate lending, particularly loans for single-family homes and other residential properties. Shareholders or depositors and borrowers can own these two types of thrifts. These institutions are referred to as thrifts, because they originally offered only savings accounts, or time deposits. Over the past two decades, however, they have acquired a wide range of financial powers, and now offer checking accounts and make business and consumer loans as well as mortgages, just as commercial banks.


Both saving associations and savings banks may be chartered by either the federal Office of Thrift Supervision (OTS) or by a state government regulator. Generally, the Savings Association Insurance Fund (SAIF) insures savings and loan associations, and the Bank Insurance Fund (BIF) insures savings banks.


Savings institutions must hold a certain percentage of their loan portfolio in housing-related assets to retain their charter, as well as their membership in the Federal Home Loan Bank System. This is called the qualified thrift lender (QTL) test. Savings institutions must maintain 65% of their portfolio in housing-related or other qualified assets to maintain their status.


Credit unions (Cus) are not-for-profit depository institutions, owned by their members, and accept deposits in a variety of accounts. Unlike commercial banks credit unions are prohibited from serving the general public, members are required to have a common bond such as having a university affiliation. All credit unions’ offer savings accounts, or time deposits; the larger institutions also offer checking and money market accounts, similar to commercial banks. Credit unions financial powers have expanded to include almost anything a bank or savings association can do, including making home loans, issuing credit cards, and even making some commercial loans. Credit unions are exempt from federal taxation and sometimes receive subsidies, in the form of free space or supplies, from their sponsoring organizations.


The number of thrifts declined dramatically in the late 180’s and early 10’s. The savings and loan crisis of the 180’s forced many institutions to close or merge with others, at great costs to the federal government. However, there has been a resurgence of thrifts in recent years.

Beowulf is an epic poem in which was written during the 8th century. Many scholars believe that the poem had been written in original non-Christian form and then later being translated adding Christian morals. There are a couple of theories in which scholars believe the Christians morals were introduced into the poem. One theory in which has the more popular vote is that the poem was already in poetic form and the authors own beliefs were added later. And the relationship will lead the individual to try to continue or increase the level of performance in order to receive more financial rewards. But there are some problems of this system. The main problem is that workers¡¯ tendency to manipulate working procedures and falsify records of output. Performance standards become slack as employees receive pay for performance that is lower than originally envisaged, hence inflating unit labour costs. Workers are often directly or indirectly able to assert control over the process of work allocation to install their own notion of equity rather than directed by management¡¯s ideas of efficiency. Management may deliberately relax standards and make it easier for workers to obtain bonuses. Workers may be reluctant to accept management¡¯s request for changes in working practices if their present job or task provides a high income and the change threatens their perceived ability to achieve high bonuses and receipt of other benefits (Beardwell and Holden, 001, pp.516-50).


Performance Related Pay (PRP) can be defined as a system in which an individual¡¯s increase in salary is solely or mainly dependent on the appraisal or merit rating (Swabe, 1817). This system could increase the motivation of employees, encourage certain behaviors; help in recruitment and retention; facilitate change in organizational culture; encourage the internalization of performance norms and weaken trade union power. But there exits some following problems expectancy theory of motivation, displacement of objectives, undermining esprit de corps, reinforcement of status, control and power differences, difficulties with the assessment of individual performance, financial constraints, and crowding our intrinsic motivation (Beardwell and Holden, 001, pp.5-58).


Competence-based pay this system reflects an intention by the organization to reward the use or development of job-related competences. Competences are already in place for development purposes. Its importance includes the following aspects. There is a move away from job-based pay to person-based pay. There are needs to stimulate and reward horizontal career moves; to develop and encourage flexibility and empowerment; to acknowledge and reward more intangible aspects of working; to acknowledge and reward the way in which objectives have been reached, not just the achievement of the objective; to ensure that organizations have the right competences and people with those competences for the future. Such schemes are less judgmental and more flexible than traditional PRP. They communicate the message that ¡®change is happening, and you are expected to change with it, but we will help and reward you¡¯. But care must be taken to ensure that the competence identified and rewarded are relevant to the content and scope of employees¡¯ roles, as there is a clear danger that organizations will significantly increase their overall salary bill without any improvements in organizational performance (Beardwell and Holden, 0015).

The high-bay area of B is the current production area for UOC, Rescue 1 and some of Prophet. The layout of this floor space was designed to house production and test. The most cost efficient options that would least impact other projects were selected. J. B Priestley was an author, novelist, playwright, essayist, broadcaster, scriptwriter, social commentator and man of letters whose career straddles the 0th century. He lived from 1th August 184 -14th August 184. He wrote many famous books and plays. The two plays I am comparing and contrasting are, ‘Time and the Conways’ first produced at the Duchess Theatre, London on 6th August 17. ‘An Inspector Calls’ first produced in London on 1st October 146 at the new Theatre. I am looking at how J.B Priestley uses time so cleverly and in a unique style.


‘An Inspector Calls’ is on a three-act play. All three acts, which are continuous, take place in the dining room of the Birlings’ house in Brumley, an industrial city in the North Midlands. It is about a mysterious inspector visiting a family before the Second World War. The style of the play seems at first straightforward and understandable, a detective thriller. The Inspector arrives with some news of the death by suicide of Eva Smith. The Inspector tries to accuse and make each individual family member confess that they ‘drove’ Eva to kill herself. Until in the rd Act Mr. Birling (father, husband and owner of the house) answers the telephone and everyone crowds around him. The police officer on the other end of the line tells the family that Eva Smith has just died from swallowing some disinfectant and that an inspector is coming to the house to ask some questions. Which is the end of the play. This tells us, Priestley liked to leave his story endings a mystery, for the audience to work out a logical explanation or question whether time was repeating itself. The only explanations I can think of is that there were two Eva Smiths, time travels, it was a set up trying to make the characters feel guilty, or a hoax call, but I will never know. Maybe Priestley didn’t know. Priestley tries to trick us, (we believe that Eva’s death is part of the past, when in fact it was yet to happen).


‘Time and the Conways’ is also a three-act play. The scene throughout is set in the sitting room in Mrs. Conway’s house (as her husband is dead). Act 1 and Act take place on an autumn night in 11. Act on an autumn night at the present time. Act 1 and are in the past. This tells us J. B Priestley liked to sometimes use different structures of his plays. Many plays go through time chronologically. They dont show the past or the future, either in dreams or talking about it. This is why Priestley became known as a very successful play writer, as well as having interesting plays. He had a distinctive way by giving audiences a good drama, but always making them want to come and see one of his next plays. From the unusual performances given and plays read, people would talk about his plays and why they were interesting.


When you read or watch act 1(past) in ‘Time and the Conways’ you see how the characters have changed in act (present). Alan, however, doesn’t change as he has a very dreary personality and we get the impression that he is a drowsy type of character. Priestley gives the audience hindsight Alan’s theories of time, e.g. ‘I’m going to live.’ Alan believes in eternal life and never having to experience bereavement as he thinks this will never happen to him, he believes that life lives on, and that if he does die something is present afterwards.

As act in ‘Time and the Conways’ reverts to 11, the audience have the power to view the characters in a ‘time capsule’ with knowledge of the past, present and future; as if we have stepped outside the barriers of time.


At the end of this journey with the Conways- so theatrically alive and full of humour- we too may be wondering what life’s journey is all about. The answer is best expressed by Alan in the end of act ; ‘What we really are is the whole stretch of ourselves, all our time, and when we come to the end of this life, all those selves, all our time will be us- the real you, the real me.’


Priestley was always fascinated by Time and its consequences. In ‘Time and the Conways’ he makes some use of Dunne’s theory, using a ‘Time Twist’ that sheds an ironical light on those aspirations of the characters, particularly those of Kay Conway.


‘Time and the Conways’ is a very different type of play from ‘An Inspector Calls’ although they are written by the same man, both having a theme of time included, each a act play that takes place in one room of a house throughout either play and using similar character roles in two wealthy families.


Priestley uses the play’s to bring across his views on society, he thought that his experiences throughout his life, the way the world works all by itself and the fact that time goes through a period chronologically all made sense. So if Priestley put these ideas in mind but to change one of them, his plays would seem very appealing to all audiences. He chose to mess around with time.


I enjoyed reading both plays, and watching a video of ‘An Inspector Calls’, I preferred ‘An Inspector Calls’ because I thought the story included a more mysterious side with time as well as it being easier to understand. ‘Time and the Conways’ is about a typical family in the 1th century, talking about politics and every day occurrences, friends and family visiting. The structure of the play is different as time travels, returns and stays, Reading or watching the play it suddenly dawns on you that time is being tampered with. However, ‘An Inspector Calls’ you only begin to realise at the end of act that there is something peculiar about time.

Lady Macbeth is responsible for the death of Duncan. To what extent do you agree with this statement?


I agree that Lady Macbeth is partly responsible for the death of Duncan. However, I do also believe that she alone was not the only person to conspire and commit this sinful act. There were other characters that I think proposed and carried out the actions that led to the murder of King Duncan.


After returning victorious from the battle with the rebel Macdonwald, Macbeth and Banquo come across the three weird sisters (witches). They are curious about the sisters and ask of them what they are; the response they get is unexpected and dubious.


“All hail, Macbeth! hail to thee, Thane of Cawdor!

Macbeth is sceptical of these words and dismisses them. However, when they meet Rosse and Angus they are shocked to hear that Macbeth has been made Thane of Cawdor, this startles Macbeth. He reacts by saying,


“Glamis, and Thane of Cawdor/The greatest is behind”


This means that he is now both Thane of Glamis and Cawdor, and the greatest thing is yet to come. (Become King) This is the first sign in the play that Macbeth believes what the witches have said, and that he now does want to be King. This thought disturbs him greatly, and therefore he resolves to leave matters to chance. I.e. not conspire to do any thing to harm Duncan but know that he will become king soon.


This idea is shattered when Duncan announces to Macbeth and others that Malcolm will in fact succeed him to the throne. Knowing that this is an obstacle, Macbeth plots how to overcome this unwelcome news. Macbeth then writes and sends a letter to his wife, Lady Macbeth, in which he explains the witches’ prophecies. On reading this she now shows her true colours to the audience.


“Come, you spirits/ That tend on mortal thoughts, unsex me here”


In that she is malicious and tactical. Immediately she concludes that killing Duncan is the option to be taken, especially as she learns that he will be staying in their castle that very night. She plans to do everything in her power to persuade Macbeth to kill Duncan. This is a key part in the events that led to the murder of Macbeth and already Lady Macbeth is affecting the goings on with her sadistic plan.


Macbeth reflects apprehension towards the plan about killing Duncan, but is reassured that he is only to act trustworthy and not out of character towards Banquo or Duncan during the banquet, as to conceal their plan. However, Macbeth still expresses doubts about murdering Duncan and fights his conscience. He fears his judgement in the afterlife and decides to call off the plan. Even so when Lady Macbeth goes to fetch Macbeth back into the banquet and he tells her that he is not going to continue, she uses a clever tactic to change her husbands wavering mind. She accuses him of being a “coward”, and then declares that she would rather kill her own baby that go back on an oath, which Macbeth has technically made. She the reassures him saying that they can blame the bodyguards for the Kings death by drugging them, and then by planting the daggers on them. This again is another important stage in the series of events, because if Lady Macbeth was not there then I am almost certain that Macbeth would have backed out.


When Duncan finally retires to his chambers for the night, Macbeth is very tentative as he is listening out for the sign to enter, (which is the bell ringing). After learning that Lady Macbeth was in the same room as Duncan and said,


“My father as he slept, I had done’ t � My husband”


This means that if he did not resemble her father so much she would have done the deed instead of Macbeth. Which shows that she had, at least once, some respect for others and some kind of conscience. Also the fact that she needed drink to carry out her part of the equation shows she is not all hardened to the core.


After Macbeth has killed Duncan he is a wreck and crumbles under this guilt and shame. Lady Macbeth however, has a calm head and tries to pull Macbeth together,


“A foolish thought, to say a sorry sight”


She tells him not to think about it and clears up after Macbeth by planting the daggers which he forgot to leave behind. This shows she is hard and headstrong whereas Macbeth is frightened. Finally, after returning she makes Macbeth retire to their chambers to not be caught and so that there is no eye-witnesses.


In conclusion I feel Lady Macbeth was vital in keeping the plan going by persuading Macbeth on two occasions to bare it, and in covering up and making the murder at least at the start seem good enough to get away with it. She did not kill Duncan though, and she would not, I think, have conspired to this plot if she had not heard that the three witches had prophesied it first. This leads me to believe that she has an affinity with evil and is a believer in witches and their satanic dealings.

The nature symbols used have ‘children’ that eventually part from their ‘beginnings’ but will always be connected to their ‘beginnings’ as without them they would not have existed. Thus conveying the eternal bond between mother and child.


These techniques used shape the reader’s response by improving their ability to understand the poem by creating a connection between symbols they have seen and events that they may not have experienced. This leads to the reader responding to the ideas of the poem in the way Wright has intended as they can relate to them and her perceptions.


Similarly McMaster uses metaphor to influence the response of the readers however also uses simile, consistent imagery and personification to convey her ideas and shape the response of her readers. She conveys, through the use of simile and personification, her perceptions of life’s journey. In The Journey, she uses a car trip to portray the pace of life, the journey of life and the struggles incurred. The car is used, as a metaphor, for the lives of those in the poems. It is used as it is a mechanism which they can relatively control and is a moving object, which relates to the relative control they have over their lives and the ‘movement’ of their lives. The car is used, also because it is an item people often come into contact with and can relate to. The scenery is used, as a metaphor, to represent life. In this poem, the scenery is described as moving rather than the car moving which signifies people’s perception that we are standing still while life passes us by. The use of simile, comparing the speed of play production to the speed of life, helps the reader gain a mental image of the concept of the poem and hence shaping their response. The reference to play production was used as plays act out events in life and because when performing a play, the stage crew and actors must be continuously doing jobs for the play to be successful which applies to the ‘structure’ of life.

McMaster personifies the fields to be like an actor to connect the similarities of plays and life (represented by the fields). The poem goes on to show the stress in life through simile,


We find relief


in corners -


slowing down, catching our emotions before the next act.


This conveys to the readers the desires of the people in the poem to ‘stop/slow’ time, in order to recover from the previous events. ‘We find relief in corners,’ refers to how people must decelerate before turning a corner. It signifies how the people in the poem feel they will find relief from the stress in life if they can ‘slow’ the pace of life. ‘Catching our emotions before the next act,’ signifies the recovering process after events in life before new events occur. In this phrase, the use of simile is continued to improve the flow of the poem and the reader’s ability to understand the concept. The use of these techniques creates a greater understanding of the concepts in the poem for the readers, enabling them to relate to them and hence influence them to respond in the way McMaster wants.


Similar to McMaster, Neilson’s use of metaphor, consistent imagery and personification influences his reader’s response however he is conveying a different idea. Neilson also uses religious symbolism to influence his reader’s response. In The Gentle Water Bird, these techniques are used to convey the fear of God he had as a child and the friend he found in Him as he matured. Neilson personifies a crane to become a symbol of God to show how he perceived God and how he converted to loving God not fearing Him. He personifies a crane as it is a large, powerful bird which overlooks humans on Earth from above, which is similar to society’s perception of ‘God’s view of Earth’. This creates a mental picture for the readers, to which they can relate more closely to, as they have seen birds but have not seen God, which influences their response to the poem in a similar way to Wright’s and McMaster’s readers.

This extract from the poem uses metaphor to portray the man’s perception of God. ‘As a calm soldier in a cloak of grey he did commune with me for many a day.’ conveys to the reader how he perceived God. Soldiers in battle have a strong bond, protect and stand by each other. This phrase conveys to the readers that he now saw God as a protector, someone who will stand by him, and someone he connected with. ‘Till the dark fear was lifted far away,’ conveys to the reader how, due to his new perception of God, was no longer afraid of Him. Here, metaphor is used to create a mental picture to which the readers can relate to as soldiers in battle and the bonds between them are a well known concept. The term ‘lifted far away,’ remains in context with the symbolism of the crane hence improving the flow of the poem and the ease with which the reader can understand the poem. This influences the reader’s response as a greater understanding of the poem and hence the intended ideas, influences the reader’s response in the way Neilson wants.


Cambridge, like the previous poets, uses metaphor to connect harsh climatic conditions and Destiny to the damage that commitment can cause to a relationship and the uncertainty of the outcomes in a committed relationship. This in turn influences the reader’s response to conform to her intended response. Like Neilson and McMaster she also uses consistent imagery to shape the reader’s response.

portrays to the reader the vulnerability and uncertainty in committing to a lover. ‘How can we guess what Destiny will send,’ conveys to the reader how uncertain the outcomes of commitment may be, as destiny is unpredictable. ‘Smiles of fair fortune, or black storms to rend,’ conveys to the reader the good or bad possible outcomes of commitment. These occurrences are also unpredictable hence creating a connection to the first line. ‘What even now is shaken by a gust?’ conveys the vulnerability of relationships. A gust, a sudden blast of wind, can more easily knock down weak structures; hence the phrase conveys to the reader the weaknesses that may arise in the relationship and the damage they may cause. A gust is also unpredictable hence connecting all of the lines. The connection between the lines improves the flow of the poem and the ease with which the reader can read and hence understand the poem, which in turn influences their response. Through the use of metaphor, the reader’s can relate to the concepts discussed which influences their response in the way discussed previously.


Again, Neilson, in Love’s Coming, uses metaphor to influence his reader’s response however in this poem he also uses repetition to enhance their responses. These techniques are used to convey how ‘quietly’ and unnoticeably love was there.


Quietly as rosebuds

The use of metaphor in the phrase, ‘quietly as rosebuds talk to thin air,’ influences the reader’s understanding of the poet’s idea. It creates a mental picture of a rosebud (roses are often a symbol of love between lovers) growing in air, which is a concept people can relate to as it is common thus influencing their response. The rosebuds symbolise the person in the poem and the air symbolises the love from a man. The rosebud and air co-exist perhaps without realizing it and air is essential for the rosebud to live and grow. This conveys to the reader more clearly the concept of the person unknowingly being loved by a man yet needing love and growing from love, as without a relation to a common concept some may not understand this. Readers gain a clearer understanding by further use of metaphor.
