The athletic apparel industry in which Nike is involved is a major money maker in the United States, but the fact that none of the factories are located in North America has brought some heat to the company. Nike controls more than 40 percent of the U.S. Market for sports related goods, but doesn’t have a single sneaker factory in this country (Miller 1). Nike continues to make millions of dollars yet exploits workers overseas by paying them very little, while requiring long hours without overtime pay in factories that are not up to “American” standard. Nike subcontractors employ nearly 500,000 workers in plants in Indonesia, China and Vietnam (Saporito 1). The exploitation of workers in Third World counties, where the majority of Nike’s labor is done sparks a controversial issue. People question why is it that Nike continues these practices. According to “Just do it, Nike,” Nike seems especially fond of doing business in undemocratic countries like China and Indonesia, where the military can be relied upon to “crack heads” if workers get out of line (Miller ). The military monitoring has been a large controversy due to the fact that these are often Chinese working against other Chinese workers, or Vietnamese against their own people also. Many of these workers are young children working to help support their families. The benefits do not make up for the low pay rates that keep them in the work force. The pay is only enough to get by where these children want to be saving in order to leave the factories and return home. In “Taking a Look inside Nike’s Factories”, part of Bill Saporito’s, “Can Nike Get Unstuck?” this is what was found. “Americans pay $100 for a pair of shoes that a worker gets less than $ a day to make. They pay Michael Jordan $40 million to endorse them. Can’t they find more money to pay the workers? The short answer is no, because corporations pay the going rate for labor whereever they are.” (Saporito 1) If this statement is true Nike pays the wage for the country the factory is in, then what is the controversy about? Much of it stems from the overtime that these workers are forced to work without over time compensation. Here in the United States there are regulations placed on businesses that require then to compensate their workers with a higher wage for over time hours. Since Nike contracts out for their factory managers, it has been hard for Nike to regulate what goes on when they are not on their tour or walk through. “A Korean supervisor in a Vietnam factory was found guilty of beating 15 Vietnamese about the head with a shoe “upper”, and another Korean supervisor was charged with sexual molestation.” (Saporito ) In this instance it was not an U.S. supervisor, nor was it a military officer but someone of a different nationality. The hard part is that there are no independent unions and meaningful corporate codes of conduct to discipline management. So workers must turn to the courts for help which is a long fought battle that no one wants to attempt. In one case that made it to, a Vietnamese court recently found a Korean supervisor guilty of beating workers and extradition may be sought for the accused sexual molester who fled. In Indonesia 4 discharged Nike workers are challenging the legality of their dismissal before the country’s Supreme Court (Saporito ). These are major breakthroughs in the court systems to have someone tried and convicted in these distant countries whose courts are often corrupted. Factory conditions are consistently getting press here in the U.S., as many are angry with Nike for not providing for their overseas employees. The following account is of the conditions in a Chiniese factory Twelve hour shifts several days a week; wages as low as 16 cents and hour; 16 workers to a dorm room; pregnant women fired. Workers are not allowed to talk. There is constant pressure to produce�workers are yelled at. If you don’t meet your high production quota you must stay until you do-without pay. The factory is noisy, filled with dust and fumes. Workers have fainted, overcome by the long hours and the glue fumes. One worker died; another lost an arm; other has had their fingers broken by the equipment. Most workers have never heard of the Nike code of conduct. There is no union and workers are afraid that if they complain, they will be fired. When a group of workers stopped working in March to protest had not been paid, they were fired. The supervisor warns workers in advance of any inspection, the factory is cleaned and if workers are interviewed it is in the presence of factory management. (“The Neediest and the Greediest” 4) This is only one description of the factory conditions and the requirements that are put on the workers of these factories, on contract with Nike. In order to deal with the criticism Nike gets about working conditions and pay, “Nike Inc recently established a new department with a mandate to continue to evolve it’s monitoring of subcontracted manufacturing facilities and to continue to upgrade conditions for workers in subcontracted facilities around the world.” (“Nike establishes” 1) This department will monitor, compensation issues, benefits, the work environments, recruiting and hiring policies, overtime policies, worker management, environmental issues and supervision of independent monitoring systems. All these are large steps by Nike to improve it’s factories and to repair the relations with people here in the U.S. who are appalled by the reports of poor work environment workers are forced to endure. “The company has been tarred by an image as a sweatshop operator that exploits Asian workers who make shoes and apparel for Nike subcontractors. Nike’s efforts to be a good corporate citizen, and they have been considerable, have yet to sway the public forum. Basically, our culture, and our style, is to be a rebel, and we sort of enjoy doing that,” says Knight, who created a jock empire based on hero worship backed up with good product and great advertising. “Now that we reached a certain size there’s a fine line between being rebel and being a bully, and yeah, we have to walk that line.”” (Saporito 6) According to Knight he will continue to make the sport-wear giant successful any way he can. “The estimated net worth of co founder and current CEO Phil Knight is $5.4 billion, one of the wealthiest people in America.” (Miller 1) The issue remains whether the sports wear giant, Nike, will continue to do work in other countries, where labor is cheap and regulations are few, and not monitored on a normal basis. Nike will continue to exploit workers in these countries as long as America continues to buy the products. Nike, who recently spent $78 million in one year on advertising worldwide, depends upon Americans and their children to purchase its sneakers. Yet it locates 150 factories and some 50,000 jobs in Asia. Knight recently made the absurd and arrogant statement that, “Americans don’t want to make shoes.”” (Sanders ) Is CEO Phil Knight right? Are American workers not willing to make the shoes that are so popular in stores and classrooms across the nation. If so, the exploitation will continue and Nike workers will remain underpaid and over worked in poor working conditions.

Many different organizations and companies have many distinct cultures and climates. However, before one can begin to describe the culture or climate of an organization we must first know what culture and climate is. So, what is Culture? Edgar Schein defines organizational culture as “a pattern of basic assumptions-invented, discovered, or developed by a given group as it learns to cope with its problems of external adaptation and internal integration-that has worked well enough to be considered valid and therefore, to be taught to new members as the correct way to perceive, think, and feel in relation to those problems.” (Miller ) To summarize a culture is simply everything that makes the organization exist. The people, the furniture, the building, the paper, the way people talk anything you can see or hear, shapes the culture of an organization. Furthermore, there are certain key elements that are present in most cultures. These elements are relevant constructs (people/ideas important to an org), practices/procedures, a vocabulary, metaphors (other names for the business), stories or legends, rites and rituals (i.e. graduation), values, heroes, and finally sub-cultures.


If I were to describe the culture of Marist College, I would begin by describing what I see and experience. Take one look at the Marist campus and you will see a unique learning environment. A tree lined campus dotted with new looking buildings over looking the Hudson River. In the middle of the campus, you see a modest round building with a large cross sprawling up the side, towering 10 feet over the top and embracing what seems to be the entire front of the building. Immediately one is under the impression that the campus embraces the catholic religion. Just beyond the church, you will see a brand new 4 floor modern library. The library is filled with brand new IBM computer workstations and shelf after shelf of books. Look in almost any of the buildings on campus and chances are you wont find and garbage, this is because the college pays for extensive “house cleaning” through out the campus. Another observation that can be made is the astonishing amount of computers on campus. Finally, one will notice the ethnicity of the students and faculty on campus. It is clear that the overwhelming majority on campus is Caucasian. If you were to look hard enough you might be able to find a few African Americans, or Hispanic students. The overall climate at Marist is a relaxed one. In general, the students and faculty appear to be in no hurry to get anywhere. The students and employees alike are seemingly friendly and egger to help a person in need. There are security patrols through out the campus to help ensure the safety of the students. I feel that Marist College in general makes a valiant effort to put on display those things they want others to feel are important to the College as a whole.


An important aspect of organizational culture is Schein’s model of culture levels and their interactions within an organization. Schein divides different elements of culture into three levels. The first level is artifacts and creations. Artifacts and creations can be defined as anything visible or audible within an organization. The second level is titled values. Values are defined as those things that the organization states it hold dear to itself. The third and final level consists of basic assumptions. Basic assumptions are conclusions that can be drawn by comparing the artifacts and creations with the stated values of the organization. Just one question, what happens when an organization says it holds a value important and it really does not? There is a name for that phenomenon; we call it an espoused value. Espoused values are something Marist College has many of. Lets analyze one specific aspect of Marist College and apply Schein’s model of organizational culture. Let begin with diversity, once again it is clear when you look around Marist College that there is little to no diversity amongst the student body or faculty. However, the mission statement of Marist College clearly states “The College aims to expose students to cultures other than their own and to the values that link and transcend particular cultures.” Here we have an artifact, the lack of minorities on campus. We have a value, the mission statement. And we can make an assumption the assumption would be that Marist College values diversity and the exposure to other cultures. We can clearly see that this is an espoused value because the values and artifacts contradict each other. However, if Marist College was to be broken down in to many smaller pieces and each piece were to be analyzed one would realize that there are many different sub-cultures within the overall culture of Marist College. For instance if one were to walk into the Gymnasium you will see many people running, jumping, and participating in many different sports. In contrast, if you were to walk out if the gym and walk into the pool house you wont see anyone running. Yes it is because it is dangerous to run near the pool, but this is what sets the two rooms apart, this is what contributes to the different cultures within the one school we call Marist College. Similarly if a communication class were observed you would see many different people interacting and talking amongst themselves, perhaps with the teacher playing an equal role. On the other hand, if you were to observe a Mathematics class you will most likely see a teacher standing in front of an organized classroom with nobody except the professor talking. The students will most likely only speak when spoken to or after being called on by the professor. And, chances are there will be no discussion between the students.


In conclusion, we now have a clear understanding of culture and climate Within Marist College. We understand the functions of culture here on the campus. In addition, we know that not all values here on campus are held by everyone, different people have different values. It is important to point out a few key aspects of culture and values. First, organizations do not have values, individuals do. Second, individuals may say they hold a particular value but their behavior says otherwise. Finally, many of the values and basic assumptions within an organization have been taken for granted. People have been passing them off as “just the way we are” and “just the way we do things around here” people often do not realize that it is all part of their organizational culture.

Truth and illusion is key to this plays understanding. It starts as a play focusing on two couples failing marriages and the intensity of their relationships between each other as well as the audience. We also discover that the seemingly perfect marriage of the young couple Honey and Nick also has deeper scenarios then first thought. This truth or the break down of the illusion is brought about by George’s probing questions ‘Tell me about your wife’s money.’ Again it is a loveless marriage fuelled by money and Honey’s ‘hysterical’ pregnancies. These self-terminating pregnancies, deceiving both herself and Nick show the unbalanced nature of Honey but also that she uses the illusion of appendicitis, a ‘false alarm’, to protect herself from being pregnant or having a child. Honey needs this illusion so she can continue to be childless, she is terrified at the start of the play of a life without this illusion, of a life with a child


“I…don’t…want…any…children. I’m afraid! I don’t want


to be hurt.”


However, by the end, when she is drunk and the pressure is high she confesses hysterically that she wants a child, ‘I want a child!’ She is tired of a life with illusion, she is probably scared by the unhappiness of George and Martha and the example of how their illusions have damaged them.


The clearest and most significant illusion that arises in the play is the illusion of Martha and George’s son. The fantasy or game world that they have created for themselves in the form of having a child is resurfaced throughout the play. Albee has created these illusions for the characters of George and Martha to use it as a weapon against each other in their power struggle. With guests present it is used as threat to intentionally hurt each other, ‘he’s not completely sure it’s his own kid.’ Through the years they have concocted a whole imaginary life for an imaginary son. The audience only find out the truth at the end of the play when George breaks the news of their sons death to Martha in such an unfeeling and flippant way that the whole farce is seen to be another of their illusions or games ‘Now pull your self together. Our son is Dead!’ This illusion is comparable to the games played between the characters, for example ‘Humiliate the Host’; they both have rules and are used as a device to gain power. However, where Martha controlled that game, this illusion shows how the power has shifted from character to character. The major difference between the games and the illusion is that the game is based around truth, the game unravels the illusion, for example ‘bringing up baby’ and ‘Get the Guests’.


The language that Martha and George use when describing the death of their son exemplifies the fact that the son is just an illusion, made up by them at the start to try and save their marriage

The hysteria that Martha displays when George decides to end the illusion upholds the argument that Albee’s characters are afraid of a life without illusion. They have come to rely upon it, employ it so much in their everyday lives that it has actually become real to them, they have forgotten how to live without the game. The breakdown of Martha also shows how powerful the game was, whoever made up the rules was in control. George won the power in the relationship by changing the rules of the game and ending the illusion. Martha at the end of the play becomes childlike and George takes on a fatherly role ‘All right. Time for bed.’


However, with the ending of the illusion, George gains power, he is not afraid of a life without illusion but thrives on it, he becomes free and the dominant one in the relationship. Not all Albee’s characters are afraid of a life without illusion.


Indeed, Nick is the first character to recognise the problems that the games and the confusing difference between truth and illusion cause in the play ‘Hell I don’t know when you people are lying or what.’ The audience identifies with Nick, as they are in the same state of confusion, not understanding where the play is going and not knowing what to believe and what not. George answers this question on Albee’s behalf with ‘ You’re not supposed to.’


There are many other illusions in the play that are not only there to allude the characters but also the audience. Honey seems to be the typical feminine wife, stemming from her descriptive name, her girly giggle and her slim hipped, frail figure. A dumb blonde who turns out to be able to speak Latin in return to George’s Latin requiem over the death of his and Martha’s illusion ‘Et lux perpetua luceat eis.’ This changes the illusion. It exemplifies that the illusions about the characters the audience started with do not last the whole play. The audience has allusions to Martha’s power, the intelligence of Honey, and Nick’s intentions with furthering his career, he is not as good and innocent as first thought ‘ I’d just better get her off in a corner and mount her like a god-damn dog, eh?’


Albee uses illusion in the play for many reasons. The audience are constantly assuming and then reassuming concerning the characters. The Crucible and “The Lottery” have some similarities and many differences. There are some likenesses amidst all of these differences. One similarity is the tradition that both the stories show. The Crucible shows the rich tradition in the Puritan church and society, and “The Lottery” is a yearly tradition that has been going on for very many years. Another likeness is in the uncertainty of the citizens of who will be prosecuted or killed next.


“The Lottery” was just a random act that nobody knew who would ultimately die, as in The Crucible so many people have been prosecuted that everyone is a suspect and nobody is sure that they themselves would not be prosecuted. These stories both have a very public place where people are killed or hanged. The suspected witches in The Crucible were hanged in front of the townspeople in the middle of the town, and the “winner” of the lottery was stoned to death by his fellow townspeople. There are some more differences between the two tales, such as the support of their neighbors. In The Crucible, mostly toward the end, the citizens began to unite and support the people being hung. However, in “The Lottery,” there was no support for the damned person, for their neighbors were the ones doing the killing. The people who died in The Crucible died for their pride and would not confess to something that they did not do and therefore died with respect. I watched the movie Speed. The two main contexts that came into play were good vs. bad and man vs. time. The good vs. bad is Keanu Reeves character Jack; the cop against Dennis Hoppers character a man who wants a large amount of money that he feels is owed to him and is putting bombs in places and blowing things up so he can get his money.

So he attaches a crane to the elevator just in time as Hopper’s character hears this from his hiding place and detonates the bomb, but Jack’s quick thinking keeps the elevator from falling all the way at once and they are able to save the people in the elevator.


The next major thing that happens is that Jack is getting coffee and a bus blows up. A phone starts to ring and Jack answers it, it turns out to be the bomber, who they thought was dead. He tells Jack that there is a bomb on a city bus that will be armed when the bus goes over 50 MPH and then if it goes below

50 MPH it will detonate. Jack has to race and find the bus and hope that it hasnt gone over 50 MPH. When he finds it he trys to tell the driver that there is a bomb on the bus. While unsuccessful at keeping them below 50 Jack has to get on the bus and figure out how to get the people off of the bus without


Hopper’s character finding out because he said no one can get off or he will blow it up. The bad thing is that the TV. companies are broadcasting what is happening on television so the bomber can see what they are going to happen, he also has a camera on the bus so he can see what is happening on the bus. Jack is racing against time to get the people off of the bus. They figure to use a closed- circuit feed and loop a tape so that the bomber thinks that they arent doing anything on the bus when they are all really trying to get off the bus. In the end he figures out that they were getting people off the bus and blows it up but thankfully they were all off safely. The conflict of good vs. bad is resolved when Jack and the Bomber are face to face on the subway and are fighting it out. Good vs. Bad. They fight and eventually the bad looses out and dies and then both conflicts of good vs. bad and man vs. time are resolved.

Most people find actions speak louder the words, but do they really? In William Shakespeares Julius Caesar Antonys words spoke louder then any of his actions. When he spoke at Caesars funeral, he was able to use his emotions and beliefs to his advantage. The major theme of his speech was Brutus and Cassius. Antony wanted the crowd of Romans to know their intentions of killing Caesar. He stressed how unhonorable Brutus was in his intentions of killing Caesar. This led the crowd to turn against Brutus, Cassius and their partners in crime. As soon as the crowd finished listening to Antonys speech, they were enraged with the conspirators. Brutus and Cassius fled from Rome in order to protect themselves. In hiding, they camped out and their friendship slowly began to go downhill. Their fight went on and included personal and political insults against each other. If Antony hadnt given his speech, the Romans would have never realized what these men really did. Without the disprovement of the Romans they would never had gotten into this situation. Would Brutus have ever figured out the true intentions of Cassius and the rest of the conspirators if Antony hadnt brought them to this point? Guilt can be one of the hardest emotions to store. Brutus had the guilt of killing one of his friends ever since Antonys speech. It caused him to realize what he did really was wrong. O Julius Caesar, thou art mighty yet! (4..105). Here he states even though Caesar is gone he is still and will always be a powerful influence. The way Brutus handled this guilt of killing Caesar was killing himself. The destruction he caused on himself, suicide was brought on by the speech. Brutus might have not ever realized the harmful crime he really committed without Antonys strong speech. The influence of a persons word can lead to a number of things. Without Antonys speech, Brutus could have had a whole different future ahead of him. As soon as Antony finished speaking, he had the Roman people already on his side ready to fight. Two very good friends were able to turn on each other quickly without anything really to even fight about. Although the speech led to a bump in the friendship of Cassius and Brutus, they were still able to remain friends in the end. The most powerful result of Antonys speech was the death of Brutus. He was able to take his own life because of someones powerful words. For these reasons, it can be believed that words really do speak louder then actions.

Regardless, this legend actually sets the tone for not only the scene, but for the play, which is primarily nostalgic, but also has a feel of romantic melancholy. Within this first scene the audience sees the family seated at the dining room table, and for the first time hears Amanda’s flashbacks to her days as a debutante. It is through these flashbacks that we come to understand Amanda and her desires for Laura. It makes sense then, that the image that appears on screen at the open of the next scene is blue roses. The image leads us into the story of the first and only boy Laura has ever liked. Laura shows Amanda his picture, and tells her “He used to call me�Blue Roses” (II.101). This image also offers a feeling of sadness, but a persistence of beauty, and romanticism, the tone that persists throughout the play.


Already, the audience can understand that the screen device is multi-purpose. Building on the ideas of transition and tone, the device is also used to offer further insight and emphasis on events and characters. This is much simpler, and plainly obvious. For instance, in scene one, when Amanda is telling the story of her 17 gentlemen callers, and we see an image of her as a girl on a porch, it is clear the image is just to emphasize the importance of this story. Later on, in scene six, after Tom has told Amanda about Jim, he addresses the audience regarding Jim. The scene opens with the image of a “High-school hero”(VI, 116). Tom tells us, “In high school Jim was a hero”(VI.116). Then the image changes, and it is the image of a clerk. We are told, “He was the only one at the warehouse with whom I was on friendly terms. I was valuable to him as someone who could remember his former glory…”(VI.116). The images simply enhance Tom’s story, and help us to better understand Jim.


The primary and most complex function of the screen device is to stir up a particular emotion in the audience. Essentially, this is when Williams is telling us not only what to pay attention to, but how to feel about it. There are occurrences in the play when the emotion the audience should feel is made very clear, such as in scene six when the legend “Terror!” appears twice, both in regards to Laura encountering Jim (IV.11, 1). However, when blue roses appear on screen again in scene seven, the message is a bit subtler. At this point, Jim and Laura are deep in conversation, and Jim tells Laura “You’re one times one!….They’re common as�weeds, but, --- you�well, you’re�Blue Roses!” (VII.1). The feeling meant to be associated with “blue roses” in this instance is different than the previous times it occurred. This time, it’s a bit of excitement, anticipation, as well as the strange, beautiful, sadness.
