The text may be in extreme relevance to our lives and a great way to learn about other societies and great morals and values. The text may also be of a high interest to students or simply a good example of how an excellent literary text is constructed. A classic example of a text that has been included as an upper school text so many years after if has been written is To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee.

To Kill A Mocking bird is about life in the eyes of Scout Finch. A young girl growing up in a society filled with racial and social prejudice and injustices, while her father, a hardworking tolerant lawyer defends a black man wrongly accused of the rape of a white girl.

A reason why this text has endured so many years is because of its close relevance to our lives today. Racial and social prejudice and injustices are both strongly brought out issues in To Kill A Mocking Bird. The majority of Maycomb judge people on their social status or colour, even if it means sending an innocent man to jail. "Cry about the hell white people give coloured folks, without even stopping to think that they're people to." Pg . These issues of prejudice and injustices are so relevant to our lives as they are ongoing issues that we in today's society still deal with yet never seem to get resolved. By including this text for so many years it can help students strive for the personal integrity Atticus shows throughout the novel whilst dealing with these relevant issues.

To Kill a Mocking Bird has also lasted as a Upper school text due to the values and morals it promotes to the reader. We see for example that Atticus prefers to use reason rather than violence. "You just hold your head high and keep those fists down, no matter what anybody says to you, don't you let 'em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change." Pg 84. Continuously throughout the novel we are exposed to high morals and values teaching us and leading us to a great way to live, and good morals and values to live by, hence being an excellent literary text for students to study.

Short Summary of „Pygmalion", written by Bernard Shaw

After a downpour of summer rain two gentlemen meet while seeking shelter under a portico; Professor Higgins is a scientist for phonetics, Colonel Pickering reveals himself to be a specialist for Indian dialects. Higgins soon takes notice of an ordinary flower girl with a strongly developed Cockney accent and takes notes as she is speaking. When Higgins is accused of being a police informant he proves his abilities in guessing correctly the bithplace of several people by identifying their dialects. This leads to a bet between Colonel Pickering and Higgins, who announces that he will transform an ordinary girl (who has not received any education whatsoever) into a graceful, poised lady whom the high society will think of as a duchess.

As the flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, arrives at Higgins' residence the next day, Pickering offers to cover the costs of the experiment and the lessons begin. During the next few months Higgins develops a relationship with Eliza that is far more complexe than any teacher/student relationship is supposed to be. He becomes a mentor for Eliza, and is fascinated by the change of her attitude and the success of his experiment. Eliza on the other hand develops feelings for her mentor and host. The first time Eliza is presented to high society in London she is being introduced to the Eynsford Hills and their son Freddy. Instantly he is fascinated by her beauty and falls for her. The final test Eliza has to pass is a fancy party that is being thrown by a well known ambassador in London. She is beautifully dressed and makes a stunning appearance as her accent is completely gone and her manners are the ones of a lady. After the party Higgins and Pickering congratulate themselves and completely forget about the girl. Eliza's feelings are hurt when she learns that she was never more than an experiment and that the "game is over". When she accuses Higgins of being irresponsible and insensitive, he is bewildered and leaves in a fury. Eliza resolves to seek advice from Mrs. Higgins but meets Freddy on her way.In the ending of this scene Freddy and Eliza kiss. The next morning Higgins arrives at his mother's house with the intention to tell her about Eliza. The old lady chides him and Pickering, who has also come, for playing with Eliza's feelings and treating her like a toy. Finally Eliza enters and thanks Pickering for always treating her like a lady.

When she is left alone with Higgins he begs her to come back since he has gotten used to having her around and has grown fond of her. She tells him about Freddy and shows that she is not, in any way, dependent on Higgins. He cannot help but admire her intelligence and self confidence, the tramp is now a real lady. As she leaves for her father's wedding, Higgins shouts after her and begs her to stay but the audience is left guessing wether she will return to Wimpole Street or settle wih Freddy.

The ancient Greek placed great importance on the body. The idea of an ideal body was the attitude of the majority of ancient Greeks. Admiration for the human body was exhibited throughout history with art and literature. Artists depicted their view of the idealistic and beautiful body through sculptures. People were not only judged on their appearance but also on their mind. These aspects helped to place the people of a society into various social levels. Odysseus was prized and admired for his cleverness, skills in trickery and strategy in waging war. Leaders were men whom had patience and a great amount of knowledge.

The physical self is seen as a positive theme in Homers writing. When the princess and the playful maids found Odysseus they thought of him as a bestial man that they feared. The narrator explains Streaked with brine, and swollen, he terrified them, so that they fled, this way and that (10). Athena the goddess who was always on her favorite mortals side adorned the savage looking man that stood before the frightened women with a larger, more handsome, youthful body. These gifts changed the princess and her maids views of Odysseus instantly. Their fear diminished and admiration took its place. Nausikaa proclaims Uncouth he seemed, I thought so, too, before; but now he looks like one of the heavens people (106). These gifts made Odysseus look like one of the gods. To possess these qualities makes the physical self more desirable. In this case they perceived the man in a different manner entirely based on his appearance. This way of thinking still exists in todays world. Physical appearance can either help you or hold you down. The standards one is judged by based on their body has changed. One is able to be part of different social classes and still possess a respected body. There are also similarities to the ancient Greek times. People today are still judged on their body based on their position in society and their physical attributes but the divisions dont seem to be as harsh.

The body was categorized in several ways. The young, athletic self was cherished. The young possessed strength and beauty that made them more desirable. It is evident in this epic tale that the strong led the weak. Competitions were held among men to separate the strong from the weak. In the following passage Laódamas foolishly challenges Odysseus to competition come join our competition, if you are practiced, as you seem to be. While a man lives he wins no greater honor than footwork and the skill that hands can bring him (1). Alkínoös son young and ignorant thought he could out do him in sport and skill. The young man does not know enough about his guest as to make such a statement. Seareach further contests you never learned a sport, and have no skill in any of the contests of fighting men. This is not the way a host was taught to treat his guest. The elderly were not treated with the utmost respect. The old were admired for their wit rather than their strength. The elderly people with most knowledge were known to be prophets. The prophets usually guided people through life with messages from the gods. (where does the quote end - page #)

Beggars were treated with little or no respect. They were abused and treated like animals. The suitors displayed this hatred towards the poor with the way they treated the princess guest. They had a low tolerance for the old mans presence. On several occasions the men of Ithaka mistreated the beggar and the swineherd due to their tattered appearance. One instance was when Odysseus came home from his long journey disguised as a beggar. His first encounter of mistreatment was made by Melánthios while on his way to his home, the palace. The foggy minded traveler having drank too much mocks the two passer bys Here comes one scurvy type leading another! God pairs them off together, every time. Swineherd, where are you taking your new pig? (17). The man finishes off his rudeness by kicking Odysseus hip as he passes. Antínoös, one of the strongest suitors grew impatient with the intruders presence in the hall and flung a stool at the strangers shoulder (6). Lower class citizens were not expected to react to this kind of treatment and so Odysseus after being treated like a dog just walked on and remained calm. The body of the rich was treated with respect. If Odysseus would have come to this island as he did the others in his travels he would not have been treated so poorly. Instead of arriving as a beggar he was a warrior craving his homeland. The rich feasted together, competed in leisure activities and designated the body as important. The weaker people in society such as children, the elderly, the cowardly and lower class citizens were excluded from these affairs.

Order Custom Essay on The Odyssey

The women treated with the most respect were the queens and princesses. The women without noble blood were slaves, maids or nurses. Most women were portrayed in a clean, feminine manner. The girl who spoke to Odysseus with contention as he was posing a mere man was quickly shut up by the strong words of the king. She went on like a fool, taunting him and calling him names. He knew of her dirty deeds and threatened to tell Telmakhos of them (47). Most female characters were submissive and respected men with the exception of Melántho, Dólios daughter, and she paid for her wrong doings in the end as well.

There is a relationship between the body and ones social standing. The clothing one wore was an indicator of social and economic status. The body of lower social standing was older, tattered and poorly clothed. One with a higher social standing was seen as possessing a cleaner body. The body was constantly being cleansed, oiled and newly clothed. This theme was consistent. With every stop Odysseus and his men took they were sent off to sea to be bathed and fed with gifts and clean clothes to wear.

The womens body and those of high social standing were celebrated. The body of the beggar was ridiculed and abused. When a person became more attractive he was treated with more respect.

Those who worshipped, respected and feared the gods acted in a more decent way than those who did not. The strongest and most patient of people did not fall weak to the temptation and seductiveness of the body. The suitors feasted on the kings herds, drank his wine and courted his wife not knowing if the king was even alive. Towards the end of the suitors lives they realized their fear for the gods should have been more prevalent.

The womens body is very important in The Odyssey. Men fall weak to the womens body. The men bought gifts in a competition to win Penelopes heart. Although the woman gains power through her body and seduction, she is still at the will of the man. Penelope was the female with the most amount of power. Even the goddesses and nymphs had less self control. Penelope held her husband for twenty years through her tricky plans. This shows an empowerment for women. Women did what they were told to do for the most part. If they did not they were subjected to foul labels. The suitors abused their privileges while in the wayward kings palace while trying to win the queen to be their bride.

Throughout this text Odysseus uses his knowledge and cunning ways to make his way home. Along with his pride this helped him to survive on the entire journey. For example, in Sweet Nymph and Open Sea he persuades the beautiful nymph to believe that he would rather stay with her than go home to his wife, the mere mortal(87). When Kirkê turned the men into swine Odysseus once again used his wits to get him and his crew out of trouble. He entices the goddess into swearing to an oath to work no more ill magic toward his harm and further convinced him to turn the swine back into men (177). The nymph fell sweet for Odysseus much like Kalypso. She even devised a plan for his safe arrival home. The master of trickery had all that was needed to be a confident leader.

There is a great deal of significance placed on the physical body in Homers work. There are many aspects of the body that place a person at a certain level. Whether it being gender, race or economic position it is prevalent throughout the work. This tale displays many layers of the social levels that are held by the people of a society. Each body holds a certain amount of power and also receives a certain amount of respect.

In the early days of June on 186, one of the first cars rolled out of the assembly line, and this horseless carriage became known as the Quadricycle. This vehicle was "high, black polished, also slab sided, with a little covered balcony projecting from the front to hold a driver and a mate."(Lacey 47) This car was probably the best car at that time because it could hold three gallons of fuel which was inexpensive. Initially the car had problems with the steering mechanism and its weak frame; however, Henry Ford would come up with new ideas to fix the problems. After he remedied all of these set-backs, Ford "was ready to venture eight miles out to Dearborn."(Lacey 44) The Prince of Wales was so captivated by this marvelous machine that he had to have one. The King felt that this model in its traditional form "could only be afforded by the elite."(Lacey 4) Henry Ford's vehicle was not particularly fast; it could reach a top speed of twenty-five miles per hour over the crude roads of the time. The reason it was able to reach this speed was that it did not weigh more than 500 pounds.

After a few years, Henry Ford produced the most famous car in automobile history, and that was the "Model T" which saw its first circulation in March of 108. Many of the plant workers could not believe the innovations in its construction."(Nevins 87) "The body itself was lifted off the ground and the design gave it a form of toughness."(Nevins 87) It was powered by a four cylinder engine that produced a meager 0 horsepower output when compared to current automobile. It carried a fuel tank that could hold 17 gallons of fuel; this allowed a driver to travel longer distances before needing refueling. The car's transmission, "a primitive sort of automatic gear," worked with a system featuring three foot pedals. (Lacey ) When this vehicle was made available to the consumers, it was hard to keep up with the demand. By the end of September of 108, 10,000 cars had been sold, and that set a record in sales in the amount of million dollars which was a 60% increase in previous sales. Consumers could buy cheaper models, but Ford's cars were more reliable. Because major parts of his car were completely enclosed, the car faired better "against rain, dust, and rust". (Lacey 101) Production figures rose to an all-time high during 111-1; Highland Park rolled out 78,440 Model T's from assembly lines manned by 6,86 workers. The popularity led to increased production the following year and employment numbers also saw an increase. This momentous time in automobile history was what produced the moving assembly line that propelled Henry Ford to the forefront and "admitted him to a magical new world" (Lacey 10)

This document is an excerpt from Mary Boykin Chesnut's diary. She was the daughter of Mary Boykin and Stephen Miller, who was one of South Carolina's chief political figures. She married James B. Chesnut, Jr., whose father was one of the state's major landowners. After James' election in 1858, Mary swiftly launched herself into the social crowd of other southern politician's wives. At the time, the Union had first aimed for secession in South Carolina, where Fort Sumter in Charleston harbor remained under Union control. South Carolina was focused on confiscating federal property and therefore declared their refusal to let the Union control the fort. On April 4th, President Lincoln decided to hold Union property in the South and ordered that Fort Sumter and Fort Pickens in Florida be reequipped. In response, South Carolina and the Confederate government decided to resist this decision. In 1860, the Chesnuts had left the nation's capital to return to South Carolina. There, James played a chief role in the state's succession. This excerpt from Chesnut's diary offers a skillful description of Charleston just before and during the attack of Fort Sumter.

The excerpt starts off with a date of April 1th. It describes the night before being one of the "merriest and maddest" dinner parties yet. It continues that Anderson did not surrender by four and therefore fire was opened. It also states that Colonial Chesnut was ordered to open fire on one side of the fort if Anderson was persistent. She describes springing out of her bed. She then hurried downstairs with the crowd of people rushing about. She also explains that her husband was rowing on the dark bay, at this point, amongst the firing. Everyone was also wondering why Fort Sumter had not fired a shot. The next entry in the document is from the following day. She writes that no one was hurt after all and that Fort Sumter had been on fire. Anderson had also not yet silenced any guns. She describes the firing making it impossible to have regular meals and that some of the people were so anxious and miserable they did not leave their bed. Most of the women had much faith, and she quotes them saying that "God is on our side… oh course, he hates the Yankees…" On the other hand, she describes the black servants not even acting as if anything was going on. She questions whether they are "solidly stupid or wiser than they are; silent and strong, biding their time?" Some of her further diary entries go on to explain that the slaves were a large force and that white southerners feared they would join on the side of the North. She writes of the great anxiety over a Union attack that resulted in blacks being lined up and coldly shot by their masters. She repetitively continued to write her entries on the many injustices against blacks as a result of the fear of war.

High America

America, the country of the free or so they say. Even though American citizens are supposedly free, there are certain restrictions governing our everyday lives. The government establishes laws that citizens must obey or suffer the penalties if they disobey. For instance an American can drink alcohol and smoke cigarettes if he is of the legal age. If a person smokes marijuana and is caught by the law, he must suffer the consequences for his actions. Marijuana is not nearly as harmful as the government displays it to be. If a person wants to use ganja in the comfort of their own home, they should have the freedom to do so. The U.S. government should decriminalize the use of marijuana.

Pot has many helpful medicinal uses. It is nearly a complete cure for glaucoma. Weed also helps elderly people deal with the severe pain of arthritis. If doctors want to prescribe their patients marijuana, they should be able to do so. It is a great medicine for cancer patients because bud induces an appetite for patients in chemotherapy allowing them to stay healthy.

Legalizing marijuana would also help the government. The government could control all distribution of reefer. Instead of spending millions of dollars on fighting weed the government could make money off of the distribution of the substance. This would allow more money for the pursuit of hard core drugs such as cocaine and crack.

Custom Essays on High America

Herring

Weed legalization would help put hard core drugs off the streets. Police enforcement could strictly concentrate on harmful drugs such as crack and heroin. Decriminalizing weed would take money out of the hands of drug dealers and put money into the government.

The government projects marijuana to be a horrific substance when in reality it is not that bad. Marijuana is a plant just like tobacco. Ganja contains fewer chemicals than cigarettes and is extremely less addictive than nicotine. It is yet to cause lung cancer because no one has smoked enough to get cancer. Users of marijuana smoke a lot less than cigarette smokers. How many people have heard of someone dying from weed? Yet how many people die a year from smoking tobacco. It does not make sense that the government legalizes tobacco and not marijuana. Being under the influence of weed is more subtle than being drunk, but alcohol is legal. The government needs to grow up and analyze the pros and cons of pot and realize it is not as bad as they think.

If America is truly a country of the free than we need to act like it. Politicians need to realize the multiple benefits that the government would reap if they legalized marijuana. Legalizing marijuana is a sound decision and one I support.
