Shattered Memories

All that is left is a greasy paper bag and a 10-dollar bill. I notice this, as I closely examine the counter-top of my fiance's one bedroom apartment. The floors are still wooden and clean, just like the way they had been when the home was first purchased. For three years now since this place has remained vacant empty; not a single person to create warmth and make it alive, yet somehow, it still maintained the fresh scent of pine. On the refrigerator I find a memo with a name and number written on it

I begin to wonder who it is as I continue to roam around the room and lose focus of what Im trying to do. Maybe Im trying to bring back memories; or maybe Im just simply trying to forget them, forget him with painless ease. Lying frozen on his study desk, I find three different framed pictures. The first one of his family who lived half-way across the world, the second one of me (a single shot) posing with a straight face, and the last one of him and me together in front of a lake gleaming with the fire-crackers in the background. I recall this last picture very well; it was taken during our last summer vacation together in Hong Kong. I remember how he dragged me by my hand with my eyes closed tight. To make sure I wouldnt peek, he blindfolded me. I remember how I pestered him with anxious questions because I was too bewildered of my surroundings. I remember his scent as I dug my face into his shoulder because I was too afraid to fall. When we finally arrived at the lake, I felt his soft and lean hands unfold the silk cloth around my eyes. I looked at him with confusion. I asked, This is what you wanted to show me, Li - the lake? He smiled with suspicion - a tender smile, a smile unforgettable. Then he got down on his knees and recited a poem he written himself. He was shaking; I have never before seen him so nervous. When the poem reached its end, he took out the ring from his pocket and asked me to marry him. Tears fell from my eyes profusely, tears of joy- maybe.

But now I am standing here in the empty apartment, holding this frame for a long period of time. Perhaps, I am trying to imprint every minute detail of the memory into my mind. Then with one distraction, the frame instantly slips, down from my hands, shatters into pieces on the ground. I hold back my tears as I start picking the broken scraps and placing them into the greasy paper bag, alongside the ten-dollar bill. I inhale another deep breath.

In order for a legal system to succeed it can not be static. As the institutions of society are always changing, the legal procedures and the law itself need to adjust to these changes to maintain the respect and support of the public.

There are many institutions which contribute to law reform such as The Judges, parliament, pressure groups, and public opinion. I will take a stand in this issue. There are too many fatalities each year in the United States due to guns in the home; they are unsafe and they shouldn't be stored in the home especially with kids in the home. I will mention and precautionary measures that should be taken to insure the safety handling of guns in the home.

In the United States, terrible tragedies occur daily involving firearms that are easily accessible to young people, either at their own homes or at the home of a relative or even a neighbor. These tragedies would have never occurred if adults would put their firearms in a locked and safe place these children would probably still be alive. National research shows that 40% of homes with children's have a gun, and in 1 out of 4 of these homes, the guns are kept loaded. Boys in this study find and play with guns; 1 out of 4 pull the trigger. Regardless of what they are taught about gun safety at home most young boys who discover a concealed firearm are likely to handle it even pull the trigger.

One of many components to guns safety is the storage of your weapon. To ensure safety of children and everyone in your household all gun owners should unload and lock up their guns, lock and store ammunition separately, hide keys where kids are unable to find them. Wherever your child plays or visits a friend's house ask their parent if there is a gun in the home and if it is stored in a safe place away from where the children play. Talk to your children about guns and teach them if they ever find one to STOP and don't touch it and go tell an adult. The popular slogan right now is "the child you save might be your own".

In Garden city, Kansas A 1 year old was accidentally killed by his best friend. The shooter is the son of a Sheriff Deputy and it was in their house that the incident occurred. The boys had come in after a target shooting practice outside when one of the boys reached for the loaded -caliber rifle and it discharched. Both parents were in a parent teacher conference. In Lillington North Carolina a 15 year old brings a gun to school to trade for shoes. The boy was arrested and charged with a felony and possession of a firearm on school grounds.

In conclusion, I am not in favor of having guns in the home. We all have a right to protect ourselves and people we love and care about, but is it worth it when you end up killing one of them in the process, Having a gun in the home comes with a great responsibility and some people are ignorant in this society when it comes to gun safety.

Have you ever been some place that changed your life forever? Some place that maybe was meant for you to see and observe? I can still recall the date, June 10, 00. Entering the Mayo Clinic, I could smell the alcohol stench hit me like a brick wall. It stopped me in my dead in my tracks. As I rotated my stiff neck around viewing the newly remodeled ceiling and professionally painted pictures of patients being cured of deadly cancers and diseases, I quickly remembered why I was here; to help my cousin Blair fight her battle with Non- Hochkins Lymphoma, a cancer that was fiercely fighting to take over her lymph nodes and soon her life. I quickly, but gently grabbed Blair's fragile, cold, and badly poked hand from needles, and gave her a reassuring smile that she could beat this horrible cancer.

Sitting patiently in the tightly packed waiting room, on the third floor, in the cancer center, time seemed to drag on. Being nervous from what I was going to hear from Blair's doctor, the small wooden chair didn't seem to help take my mind off of my worries and concerns. As I was trying to learn more about this deadly cancer and Blair's chances of beating this horrible thing that tore our family up, my train of thought was quickly shattered when over the clear loud speaker, "Blair Vanderhof to the front desk please," rang out over the waiting where people sat like zombies waiting to find out if their loved one would be with them for years to come. Walking through the big, brown door, that behind it, held my dearest cousin's destiny, I couldn't help but take one look over my trembling shoulder at the people that waiting to find their own destiny out. I quickly asked God to be with each person in the Mayo Clinic today, because I knew how bad it hurt to not know what the future held for your loved one.

As we entered the doctor's neatly cleaned and organized office, my stomach suddenly felt like a bunch of tight knots with people pulling on the ends of the ropes. The doctor greeted us with a firm handshake that about tore my lifeless arm out of the socket. After gently shutting the heavy door behind us, the doctor offered us some refreshments. I couldn't dare eat or drink anything. My tongue felt as rough as sandpaper from the inadequate supply of liquids. Pouring himself a cup of coffee, I quickly knew the doctor had some serious information to talk to us about. I quickly said another short, but sweet prayer asking God to guide and help all of us in this crowded and scary room this morning.

"The bird that would soar above the level plain of tradition and prejudice must have strong wings." (Chopin 4) Stated by Mademoiselle Reisz in Chopin's "The Awakening," the struggle to find one's self resonates throughout three novels the aforesaid "The Awakening," Bronte's "Wuthering Heights," and Malamud's "The Assistant." Relationally, the inhibiting actions of the males propel the females' desire to find self-fulfillment by seeking the unattainable.

Catherine Earnshaw lies hampered due to her husband's failure to provide while she combats her hopeless desire for fulfillment within Heathchcliff. Catherine dismisses Heathcliff's advances, feeling that "it would degrade [her] to marry Heathcliff now" (Bronte 7) and marries Edgar instead. Though she rationalizes that this marriage will ensure Heathcliff financial security in the future, Catherine feels that "in my soul and in my heart, I'm convinced I'm wrong!" (7) Her relationship to Edgar borders upon submissiveness of the husband to wife for "It was not the thorn bending to the honey suckles, but the honeysuckles embracing the thorn." (8) Even Heathcliff takes heed of the differences between the couple. "It is not in him to be loved like me how can she love in him what he has not?" (17) Heathcliff realizes that Edgar does not symbolically embody Catherine as he does, as Catherine exclaims, "I am Heathcliff!" (7) Such bold a statement proves her desire to be one with Heathcliff as her marriage to Edgar only came about as a result of circumstance. Catherine seeks a way out of "this shattered prison" (147) of life without Heathcliff, yet, by yearning for what the unobtainable life, Catherine dies due to a broken heart fulfilling her desire to escape Edgar yet ultimately sacrificing herself to the dream of true love.

Edna Pontellier responds to the bitter struggle of an neglecting husband and shackled life through tragic self-discovery as she desires relationships unable to take place. "She would, through habit, have yielded to his desire...unthinkingly." (Chopin 87) Disobeying her husband's command to go inside, not waiting for the callers on Tuesdays, and abandoning her house on Esplande Street proves Edna's struggle to awaken to the true realization of her freeing herself from the tomblike surface of materialistic possessions."I would give up the unessential...my money...my life for my children; but I wouldn't give myself." (14) The inhibition of her maternal duties results from a desire to be herself, not a desire to abandon her family, a result of her self-discovery. "She was thinking of Robert. Her husband seemed to her now like a person whom she had married without love as an excuse. Alcee was absolutely nothing to her." (18). Her discovery occurs artistically through Reisz, and sexually Robert and Arobin. "The years that are gone seem like dreams...perhaps it is better to wake up after all, even to suffer, rather than to remain a dupe to illusions all one's life." (16) Edna fully realizes that due to the inability of her husband and her life to provide for her the ability to explore herself, death remains as the only escape and the true realization of ultimate self-fulfillment.

Helen Bober strives towards her self fulfillment by desiring an escape from the prison-like surface of the grocery that results from the infertile finances of her father and the hopeless desire of Frank. Ironically, by chastising her father, stating that "he buried himself in [the grocery]. He made himself a victim. He could...have been more than he was,"(Malamud 78) Helen defines her own life, stuck within the dull monotony of suffering, unable to earn a college degree and fulfill her own aspirations. Starting upon the wrong foot by losing her virginity, Helen possesses a negative outlook upon men, desiring the life of a teacher or social worker, of which Frank notices. "When she had looked at him [Frank] was at once aware of something starved about her, a hunger in her eyes he couldn't forget because it made him remember his own." (7) Frank realizes that he provides little for her ambitions, as he is but a grocer, a reforming thief who is not Jewish. Striving to reverse her stereotypical yet fearful attitude, Frank offers gifts, an open ear, and opportunity through the guise of college aid, prompting Helen to consider Frank yet with reservations. "She feared most of all the great compromise...that her life would not turn out as she had hoped, or would turn out vastly different...she would not part with the substance of her dreams." (16) After the rape, Helen takes back her former statements about Frank; however, through further contemplation, Helen sees the acts of kindness and compassion that drive Frank to succeed as for the benefit of her family. "She had hated him, she thought, to divert hatred form herself." (88) Frank is the unobtainable dream, whose life mirrors the destruction and struggle of her father's suffering, and through these realizations, Helen realizes that she seeks a way to better her life, an unobtainable goal previously due to Frank's value displacement, yet now remains fulfilled as she learns to embrace the suffering inherent within the grocery, thereby freeing herself from entrapment.

Custom writing service can write essays on The Unfulfilled Female

The search for self becomes complicated by the entrapment of males restricting and not providing for the necessary expectations of the female, as seen through Catherine, Helen, and Edna, each who seek the unobtainable. As Reisz states again, "The artist must possess the courageous soul that dares and defies," (8) one notices the independence of women that lies prohibited by male actions. On a side note, it seems ironic that only the male author finds self-discovery fulfilling through life and not through death.

The Comparison

In both poems the females suffer because of the seduction in The Seduction she is seduced by a man when she is drunk an he takes advantage of her. In Cousin Kate she is seduced by a Lord because she is tempted by his money.

The blame is not put on the man in question in either of the poems. In The Seduction she blames herself by what had happend an other would look at her in disgust when no one blames the man in question. In Cousin Kate the Lord is not blamed for what he had done Christina blames herself for falling for his money an land then she says My fair-haired son, my shame, my pride, Cling closer, closer yet which suggests the Lord has abandoned her with his child but she still loves the child.

In both poems the women are the victims they have trust in the men an a inocent nature an because of that they both suffer from it because the men take advantage of it.

Buy cheap comarison term paper

The reactions of other people in both poems are unfair such as in The Seduction she would be judged by her neighbours, they would talk about her. In Cousin Kate Christinas neighbours call her an outcast which is also unfair an i dont agree with it because she is a victim to seduction it should be the man who is to be blamed.

In Cousin Kate Christinas child brings joy to the bad things that happend which is good but in the Seduction the child brings guilt and unhappyness because she is to young an is not ready for a child, she wanted a man to be there for her.

The men in both poems do not take responsibility for there actions in The Seduction the man runs away from what has happend an never sees her again. In Cousin Kate the the man (The Lord) refuses to have anything to do with Christina because he is with Christinas cousin called Kate.

Both poems are love poems but are unromantic there about the downside of love. In the Seduction the place which is next to the Mersy river an its dark an gloomy an the atmosphere is very unromantic and upseting. In Cousin Kate it is also unromantic because of what happends which is similer its not a very nice setting its unromantic.

Both poems are personal stories with a point to make. The Seduction makes a point by showing how the media fool or take advantage of young people by selling magazines saying how life should be when to everyones life is the same.

I think both give good examples of what could happen to people in that situation an can help young people to understand and make the right choice an not be victims themselfs. I agree with the points made there good examples to other people. I feel more sympathy for the younger girl in The Seduction because she is alot younger an has not had chance to have alot of fun an now she will be stuck with a child that she doesnt want an doesnt know what to do thats why i feel more sympathy for her.

My friends often ask me the same questions ¡°Why do you prefer going to Canada for a bachelor degree since you are already a sophomore in China? Haven¡¯t you found it is a waste of time?¡± At that moment, I really do not know what I should reply. How can you explain to others before sufficiently persuading yourself? However, after reading this poem, I believe the answer has become clearer¡Âª¡Âªwe can not choose both roads. In other words, no one could escape from making choices, probably because we are human-beings.

As a matter of fact, many students in my country intend to finish their undergraduate programs, although they are not quite interested in them. On the one hand, there are a lot of realistic factors related to job-hunting, which we have to consider primarily; on the other hand, due to the education system we are required to declare our majors before enrolling in a university, and as well we are not permitted to change majors or departments. Thus under those circumstances, not a few students, like me, feel regret for what we are learning currently. But compared with them, I am lucky¡Âª¡Âªfor I have the financial support from my parents, admission to Saint Mary¡¯s University and acceptance of a one-year visa¡.

Go back to this poem, one thing that echoes to me is the line ¡°I doubted if I should ever come back.¡± But what I suspect is not returning to China at the halfway point. Instead, it is doubtful whether I can adapt to Canadian life style; it is uncertain whether I can manage my studies in Saint Mary¡¯s University; also, it is a question whether I will achieve a better future in my career after graduation.

Furthermore, I cannot stop asking myself¡Âª¡Âªis it really good fortune for me to come to Canada? No one knows, perhaps. It is only if we drink the wine that we can tell its flavor. Let us take Frost as an example. In front of the ¡°two roads diverged in a yellow wood¡±, he ¡°took the one less traveled by, and that has made all the difference.¡± Listening to the speaker, it is not difficult to understand how satisfied he is for his final choice. And just these words have inspired me to establish confidence in the future, even made me feel pride about my own decision. I hope someday when looking back at my life in Canada I will say it has made ¡°all the difference¡±.Order College Papers on Impression on "The Road not taken"

While residing outside of the United States for several years, I was never given the opportunity to identify myself with music, art, or dance. Even though I was not forced to listen to music I did not like, as a child I did not have my own cultural expression. After moving to the United States, I became fascinated by cultural expressions. Everywhere I turned I saw something new, something that I might identify myself with, whether it was clothing, music, school or religion. There have been times when I have focused on these expressions with a critical eye, however I soon come to realize the real meaning of cultural expressions. I consider music as being one of the major points of cultural expressions. Music can be explored by all and viewed in many different ways.

I am a true lover of music, however when rap music came about, I though that it should have been banned from the radio and even selling of the actual lyrics. I had a misconception of rap, I felt that this was a result of the media. I could not understand how someone could turn a beautiful thing like music into a bunch of words that meant nothing to anyone. That is where I was completely wrong. It took me a while to understand that even though rap wasn't how I expressed my culture, there were others in the world that clearly identified themselves with it. In general, rappers tend to rap about how to avoid gang pressures and still earn local respect, how to deal with the loss of several friends to gunfights and drug overdoses, and tell elaborate, and sometimes violent tales. All though there are still some who feel that rap music is to angry, or promotes violence, I have come to realize that quite often these songs are heartfelt stories about the life of those telling the story. As time moves on, rap music continues to flourish as a culture that many can identify themselves with. Rap is known for bringing together a tangle of some of the most complex social, and political issues in todays American society. Rap initially caught on because of the fact that it offered young urban New Yorkers a chance to freely express themselves and it was accessible to anyone.

Rap music clearly affected society and created a huge culture which many follow. Rap gives us a chance to express ourselves and tell our life stories in a different way, one that is more comfortable for some. Cultural expression is something an individual can associate themselves with for example rap, as well as graffiti, and break dancing. Rap also offers unlimited challenges as there are no real set of rule. Another aspect that made it a cultural expression was that rap could be about any and/or everything. Now that mainstream America has become used to the idea that this music that was once confined to the urban sections of our country, is now a part of everyday life, it has become easier to identify with. The original intent of the cultural movement is still in place, and has great social significance to the world of music. Because rap has evolved into such a large industry, it gives the illusion of being a quick escape from the harshness of inner city life, once more identifying with cultural expressions.&

Help with essay on culture

In todays society everywhere you look, you can see people of all ages wearing clothing inspired by rap artists and even the very way that we speak has been affected as slang becomes a more acceptable form of expression. Today the rap movement is coming on strong. The movement is still trying to teach people about rap and its elements. Rap as a cultural expression has given a voice to people that were formerly left unheard, and given urban youths entry into a three billion dollar a year business. The rap culture is now incorporated in several different ways including the movies and TV, clothes, speech and the way we interact with each other.

The culture I identify myself with is the Armenian American culture. Within this culture lie several different aspects including music, dance, and art. I feel that cultural adaptation within the United States is by choice, and society has allowed me to express my culture openly. When I was younger I was under the impression that Armenian music, dance, and art were deemed universal and found it very hard to understand why my classmates where not intrigued the way I was. Surely now twenty years later, I am thrilled that my cultural expressions are part of my daily life and that I am given the opportunity to share these expressions with others. Armenian music offers many rich means of cultural expression, it is a creative inspiration, mainly because of the parallel to the history of the Armenian nation. I have attended several Armenian music festivals, these festivals are such a joy to our community because it allows other members in our society to come and understand our culture, individuals are able to listen to the vibrant music which is accompanied by percussion instruments.

My cultural expressions through Armenian dance, music, art and religion insures the survival of the Armenian existence, and are alive today in the United States and many countries around the world, with its center in Republic of Armenia. Despite the great losses which the Armenian culture suffered during the centuries of foreign domination, it showed the durability and originality of its creators. I am very ecstatic that the United States has given many of us the opportunity to introduce and reflect in many ways when it comes to cultural expression and I have not viewed any resistance by society we live in.

Teens and their unnecessary back problems

What is it about homework that makes it seem so daunting? Could it be that today's kids just can't seem to keep up with it? Perhaps busy scheduales prevent student from completing the assignments? Or could it be the fact that teachers feel the need to assign excess amounts of homework. The way teachers pile on homework you would think, teachers work on commission. People weren't kidding when they said, too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing.

Let's analyze for just a moment, the original intent of homework. Homework is a great tool for learning, and teaching for that matter. It gives students an opportunity to practice and perfect the skills necessary to succeed in school. Teachers today seemed to have lost this noble intent. Busy work seems to be the choice of our educators. The intent of busy work is quite clear, to have the kids sit down and shut up. When closely examined, all busy work does is frustrate students to the point of relinquishment. This coupled with the fact that students have a hard enough time staying focused we should not be waste away what valuable time we do have. Why then are we monopolizing the time of teenagers with redundant busy work?

Cheap University Papers on Teens and their unnecessary back problems

Six classes a day makes for a very demanding homework schedule. Most students having two of those classes in math and science. If the average homework load per class is twenty minutes a night, then that adds up to two hours of homework a night. That is a lot of work to keep up with, especially considering some students work and are involved in sports or other school activities. It is just not reasonable to assume that a normal active teen would be able to keep up with their activities and academic responsibilities. We can only ask so much of our youth.

Sometimes being a teacher requires a little bit of psychology. In many cases kids will do just to spite authority figures. So by giving them even more homework, they would be even more apt to not do any of it. The key here is to find a balance. Giving the kids enough homework so that they learn the material but don't get burned out. It is a fine line that teachers must tread.

Homework is by no means useless or harmful. Its advantages are numerous and remarkable. The problem is with teachers feeling that quantity outranks quality. A teacher of my once put it to me in a way that made a whole lot of sense. He said that you shouldn't have to walk a mile to prove that you can walk ten feet. That is certainly something we need to keep in mind. I say save your backs and unload a few books from the Jansport. I do not feel that homework should be eliminated, I only feel that it looses it's meaning when used too excessively

I watched the movie Speed. The two main contexts that came into play were good vs. bad and man vs. time. The good vs. bad is Keanu Reeves character Jack; the cop against Dennis Hoppers character a man who wants a large amount of money that he feels is owed to him and is putting bombs in places and blowing things up so he can get his money.

The man vs. time conflict is also part of the good vs. bad, the good; a Jack is racing the clock that Hopper's character had set to get the people out of the elevator before Hopper's character blows the emergency brake and the elevator full of people plummets thirty floors to the ground. But the challenge is that Hopper's character knows that the police are there and might try and get the people out of the elevator. So the cops are racing against a clock that they have no idea when the time will be up. Jack figures that Hoppers character will jump the gun and blow the emergency break any ways. So he attaches a crane to the elevator just in time as Hopper's character hears this from his hiding place and detonates the bomb, but Jack's quick thinking keeps the elevator from falling all the way at once and they are able to save the people in the elevator.

The next major thing that happens is that Jack is getting coffee and a bus blows up. A phone starts to ring and Jack answers it, it turns out to be the bomber, who they thought was dead. He tells Jack that there is a bomb on a city bus that will be armed when the bus goes over 50 MPH and then if it goes below50 MPH it will detonate. Jack has to race and find the bus and hope that it hasnt gone over 50 MPH. When he finds it he trys to tell the driver that there is a bomb on the bus. While unsuccessful at keeping them below 50 Jack has to get on the bus and figure out how to get the people off of the bus without

Hopper's character finding out because he said no one can get off or he will blow it up. The bad thing is that the TV. companies are broadcasting what is happening on television so the bomber can see what they are going to happen, he also has a camera on the bus so he can see what is happening on the bus. Jack is racing against time to get the people off of the bus. They figure to use a closed- circuit feed and loop a tape so that the bomber thinks that they arent doing anything on the bus when they are all really trying to get off the bus. In the end he figures out that they were getting people off the bus and blows it up but thankfully they were all off safely. The conflict of good vs. bad is resolved when Jack and the Bomber are face to face on the subway and are fighting it out. Good vs. Bad. They fight and eventually the bad looses out and dies and then both conflicts of good vs. bad and man vs. time are resolved.

DYNAMICS, TONE COLOUR AND EXPRESSIVE TECHNIQUES OF THE ENSEMBLE HORN IN THE 0TH CENTURY

Music for the French horn is thought to have originated from the fields, plains and forests of Europe. Hunters and poachers used the bright and superb upper ranges of the Horn with loud dynamics to sound above the busy array of hounds and other noisy features of "the hunt".

The earliest evidence of Horn notation is the music of Hardouin, published in 1856 , using small black and white squares to represent approximate pitch, in a hunting style.

George Turberville (mid 16th century) also pioneered in writing for Horn, by rhythmically notating the hunting Horn sounds.&

Help with essay on king lear

The Horn as a hunting utility became increasingly popular during the times of King Louis XIV, of France. It was mainly used in courtyard music and ceremonial activities, however the composer Francesco Cavalli used the Horn in his first opera "Le Nozze di Teti e di Peleo" . The "Call to Hunt" fanfare displays the use of the major third, exclusively featured in the Horn section. Although Cavalli may have just used the Horn as an appropriate instrument for a hunting fanfare, he was the first to musically notate the brilliance and clearness (especially at fff) of the Horn's middle range to generate a "call".

Ironically, it wasn't until a Bohemian heard the sounds of this "Hunting Horn" in the French courtyards and enclosures of King Louis XIV, that the sounds of the Horn were notated for ensemble and solo works. Franz Anton bought many varieties of Horn back to his Bohemian homeland and spread the convention of Horn playing across his country. More importantly, he wrote much sonata-like Horn ensemble and solo music. Although Cavalli may have been the first to bring Horn indoors (in his first Opera), Anton was the first to keep it there.

The 17th and 18th centuries saw chamber music; music for ensembles to be heard by aristocrats. Johann Sebastian Bach wrote operas, chamber works and sonatas for a small variety of basic music instruments. Over time, the Horn was subtly added to Baroque ensembles. Innovators such as Ludwig von Beethoven and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart included the Horn exclusively in symphonic works and Wind Serenades (respectively). Mozart even wrote a set of concertos for the Horn.

As composers demanded for new types of sounds to be played and for new types of expressions to be conveyed, technological hindrances limited the Horns tonal abilities. The invention of the rotary valve at around 180 vastly broadened the horizons for the Horn, and it was almost permanently added to the orchestra.

The commencement of the 0th century saw the new Impressionistic artistic style. Claude Debussy's inspirations, manifested in works such as Voiles and La Cathdrale Engloutie , abandoned the conventional phenomenon of "tonality" , and displayed music as an evocation of colours.

Oliver Messian furthermore developed this concept, by creating his own series of chords and harmonies to each display a different colour.

Russian composer Stravinsky pioneered in the art of neo-classicism, that is, adopting the old techniques of the past and using them in new and different ways.

Mid century western music like Anton Webern and Arnold Schenberg exhibited the more so new musical style of Serialism.

Other landmark works such as Edgard Varese in his work Ionization, and ???? in 4'" both pushed towards the ultimate modern compositional goal, "the liberation of sound".

As we have seen, composers have been using the horns tone colours for centuries. Its wide register and unique physical shape help to achieve a wide variety of different colours and sounds.

The mere shape of the Horn also allows a wide range of dynamics. Although dynamics can have a large effect on tone colour, it reserves a unique musical category of its own. In contrasting a romantic works scored for orchestral/ensemble Horn such as Strauss's Don Juan, to a classical work, for example Symphony 41 by Mozart, a great change in dynamic range is evident. Composers have turned to a greater range of dynamics over time, thus resulting in greater demands for solo, ensemble and orchestral works, for those including the horn.

Lastly, composers look to different expressive techniques to portray or express different ideas and feelings within works. With an instrument such as the horn, many different unconventional techniques can be used to do this.

This essay will analyse a series of 6 works that exploit the Horn's tone colour, dynamic range and use unconventional expressive techniques, in the late 0th century. Works such as Benjamin Brittens', Seranade (Opus 1) have used the Horns' upper register as an endorsement of colour within the vocalists' solo range .

Other works like Bakery Hill Rising, by Vincent Plush, portray scenes and/to evoke feelings through the solemn use of the Horn's "heroic" middle to upper registers.

Brett Dean writes music for 6 horns in his large scale orchestral work Beggars and Angels, and uses a mixture of conventional and unconventional techniques to illustrate his impressions of harmony and tension, respectively.

Oliver Messiean uses the full register and full dynamic range, mixed in with many interesting and bizarre horn techniques, to generate a call in his work Appel Interstellaire .

More and more children and students these days seem to be more preoccupied with their schoolwork than ever. With new curriculums and testing in progress we have to stop and think how much stress students are in these days. Not many people stop to think about the younger generation. The amount of homework assigned to students should be reduced.

First, the amount of homework should be reduced because children need to be children. It seems that even younger elementary children are being assigned two to three hours of homework a night. A couple years ago a ten-year-old would have twenty hours of homework and now they are stuck with hours of it. Children should be climbing amongst trees and riding their bikes until bed time. Not doing homework until eight oclock.

Secondly, students and children all need some time to them selves and a social life. They need to have time in their schedule to go out with friends or spend time with their family talking and hanging out. How are students supposed to learn how to socialize with others in the future, like in a working environment, if they never get the opportunity or time to do so? Also, students need time to them selves. To relax their mind and body. With so much homework, there isnt time for any of this anymore.

Lastly, if the amount of homework is reduced, students would be able to focus better. Two hours of homework in each subject does add up, and teachers dont realize that. How are students supposed to enjoy school or a subject, let alone stay focussed in class when theyre up until ten or eleven oclock completing homework? It has come to the point where most students dont even bother doing it anymore. If students spend an overall of two hours each night on homework they will have time for other things. Such as, extra curricular activities, clubs, and socializing, they would be a lot happier. Not to mention, they wouldnt be as frustrated or tired, so they would stay focussed more. Therefore, children and students must act and do as individuals their age are supposed to. Students need time to themselves or they will build up so much stress inside that will one day explode, causing them to react in anger or have a mental breakdown. They also need a social life they can build upon and so they feel some control in their life. When the amount of homework is reduced, students will be able to stay focussed more, theyll feel less stressful and they will be a happier and healthier person both inside and out.

The Industrial Revolution brought about swift urbanization, which was a movement of people to cities. A great demand for workers led numerous of people to move from farms to cities increasing day by day. Just overnight, small towns grew into cities. However, in these new, packed urban centers, misery festered.

Women made up a big part of the work force. Women were preferred to work than men because employers thought that women were easier to manage and could adjust more easily to machines. Most important though, employers were able to pay women less than men. However, factory work created problems for women.

Having the women to work at the factory and then come home was harsh, but getting the children involved with hard labor is just flat out wrong. Some of the children may begin to work as early as ten years of age. Many boys and girls were hired at factories and mines changing spools in textile mills or pushing coal carts through narrow mine shafts. Orphans were also hired by employers having to work long hours for a minimum of food. Addition to children working, if any child was caught idling they were beaten.

Considering the period that such drastic changes began to take place, there truly was hardship of early industrial life. Parents accepted the idea of child labor because children helped with farm work and the wages the children earned were needed to help support the family. On the other hand, women had to work a good bit also and received fewer wages. The women were guaranteed one hundred percent full blooded workers, but were paid eighty percent less than a man just because she was a female.

Because of Patience Kershaw's testimony, many people in Britain were shocked, and slowly the Parliament passed laws to resolve the employment of children in mines and factories.

In conclusion, times were definitely hard throughout the industrial cities. Once again, the people experienced an extreme change in their existing conditions. Nevertheless, despite of the low pay, dangerous working conditions, and unsanitary housing, in time things got better and brought materials benefits. The beginning of the industrial age brought about great suffering, but no one knew what it would bring about in the end.

The fight for women's suffrage, or voting, went on for about seventy years. The fight first officially started in 1848 with the first women's rights convention in Seneca Falls, New York. This was the start of a long, complicated battle.

The woman's rights issue was actually first motivated by another cause, anti-slavery. There were meetings that women weren't allowed to vote in. At the World's Anti-slavery Convention, women weren't allowed in. Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Lucretia Mott, later suffrage leaders, were two of the women who were excluded admittance.

It was 1848, and Stanton and Mott were starting their journey on the road to suffrage with the first women's rights convention. The women at the convention made up a list of complaints to show that for years men have been dominant over women. This became the first public protest for women's rights in America, "The Declaration of Sentiments."

Many people opposed to the idea of women's rights. Men, of course, being the majority of it. They thought that women weren't as smart. They thought they could represent women better than women themselves. There were also women who thought that women in politics would be the end of family life.

Buy cheap Women's Suffrage term paper

In May 186, two women's suffrage organizations formed. The first was the National omen's Suffrage Organization formed by Stanton and Anthony. This group was the more radical of the two, their goal being to have an amendment ratified for women's suffrage. The other was the American Women's Suffrage Organization, the conservative one. Their goal was to get individual states to grant women the right to vote. Later, in 180, the two joined together to make the National American Women's Suffrage Organization.

For over fifty years, these women were determined to win voting rights. So determined in fact, that in 187, Susan B. Anthony and 50 other women went to register to vote in the presidential election. They were refused at first, but demanded to be able to register. Fifteen women along with the inspectors who allowed them to register were arrested and tried with a $500 bail.

The unwavering determination of these women was starting to wear down the all-male government. First came Wyoming in 186. The next was Utah in 1870 and then Colorado in 18. The boundaries of women were expanding. By 11, 7 states gave women full or partial suffrage. In 118, the suffrage amendment, which was proposed in 1878 but left unchanged, was defeated and then a year later. But in 10, the women's suffrage amendment was finally ratified.

After a very long battle, the women's struggle paid off. Their long-awaited goal was granted. This was official with the nineteenth amendment. After suffrage was granted, women continued working on women's rights.

"Age discrimination cuts both ways even as people live longer, healthier lives, you hear about men and women in their 50s who lose their jobs and have trouble finding work because theyre considered too old." (Wilson-Smith, 00) As baby boomers age, this issue is becoming a bigger and bigger problem. Consider this the tough job market especially in white collar jobs as well as increasing worries about age discrimination lawsuit issues are tempting some older job candidates to change their appearances.

"Sixty-three percent of job seekers would leave a date off their resume to hide their age, according to a survey by online job board HotJobs. Nearly 0% said they would consider plastic surgery to improve job prospects." (Aramor, 000) Age discrimination cases filed with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission hit 1,1 in the year 000 -- a more than 40% jump from 14,141 in 1. (Aramor, 000). My planned approach to this assignment is to list the facts and questions as presented in the module in a general fashion, and not specifically to an individual case or hypothetical scenario.

In summary, The Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 167 protects workers who are 40 years of age or older. This law specifies

"Sec 4a It shall be unlawful for an employer to (1) fail or refuse to hire or to discharge any individual or otherwise discriminate against any individual with respect to his compensation, terms, conditions, or privilege of employment, because of such individuals age; () to limit, segregate or classify employees in any way which would deprive or tend to deprive any individual or employment opportunities or otherwise adversely affect his status as an employee, because of such individuals age; or () to reduce the wage rate of any employee in order to comply with this chapter." (0 U.S.C. 6). The law also prohibits statements or specification in job notices or advertisements of age preference and limitations. For example Help wanted notices containing the verbiage such as "age 5 to 5, or young, or college student" (EEOC). According to the law, the age limit may only be specified in the rare circumstance where age has been actually proven to be a "bona fide" occupational qualification (BFOQ). An employer can also not discrimination on the basis of age for apprenticeship programs and promotions. Also prohibited is the denial of benefits to older employees. (ADEA).

Penguins are an old type of bird, having traces back to 45 million years ago. Penguins are said to be evolved from ostriches. Penguins, like all other birds are warm-blooded. The southern hemisphere is the only place you will find penguins. This is thought to be because of the way the islands coasts are structured. The rocky coasts found commonly in the northern hemisphere are dangerous to the penguins, because of their loss of cover. Contrary to belief, penguins live in more places than just cold regions. In fact, penguins have been seen to live as high north as Ecuador. Penguins feed under water, killing small fish for food. Penguins have a unique coloration that makes them popular. People compare this to that of a tuxedo. There is a reason behind this feature. When you look down into the water, it looks dark. That is why the penguins back is black. It blends in with the darkness of the deep water. When you look up from below the water, it looks bright. The penguins white front blends in with the brightness of the surface of the water.

The largest and smallest species of penguin are the emporer and fairy; respectively. The emporer is the most populous species on the planet. The taxonomy of the penguin are as follows kingdom, Animalia; phylum, Chordata; class, Aves; subclass, Impennes; order, Sphenisciformes; family, Spheniscidae. The major genuses of penguin are the Aptenodytes, Pygoscelis, Eudyptotes, Spheniscus, Eudyptula, and Megadyptes. One unique type is the crested penguins. These penguins have riffs of feathers around their head. The different species of crested penguins are easily identified by the coloration of these crests.

Penguins bodies are adapted to their environment very well. This is why they have been around for so long. Penguins must take in lots of food to complete their metabolic activities needed to stay warm. This has caused them to need a large stomach. For this they lose their ability to fly, but gain the ability to withstand the long periods of cold. Penguins feathers develop special oils that keep water away from the penguin. If it werent for this they would catch hypothermia very quickly. After time, these feathers will lose their oil and become damaged. Unlike hair, feathers grow once and never grow again. To repair their feathers they must go through a process called moulting. While moulting, all the penguins feathers fall off, and it grows new feathers. During this period, the penguin has little protection from water, so the penguin must stay on land. This is because the new feathers havent developed their oil yet. The whole moulting process usually takes three weeks. Before the penguin moults, it must take in large quantities of food, like the mammals do when they hibernate. The legs of a penguin are very small. They are covered in feathers, and hard to see. Penguins waddle on these small legs, not because the legs are small, but because it saves energy. Instead of having to move all the leg muscles, the penguin just needs to move a few. The penguin must keep all energy it can, because it gets its heat from energy. Blood travels to these legs in a special way. The blood is actually heated up when it is sent to the legs. This is to keep the legs very warm to keep from freezing to the ice. Penguins have developed a special eye. This eye has very strong light focus in front of the penguin and has very keen sense to blues. Reds and yellows are filtered out, because they are what causes the blur we humans see when we see under water. The penguins also have a disadvantage their field of view. Their eyes sight only overlaps at a small portion obove the beak.Without both eyes overlapping, it is hard to tell how far something is. However, their overlapping sight is very good below them. Because of this, a penguin will swim above its prey, then itll dive at it. If it just dived at it normally, it wouldnt know how far to dive.

Predators of the penguin are divided into two categories. Land and water killers. The land killers are the giant petrel, pedatory gulls, sheathbills, and some sea gulls will feed on penguin eggs. In some areas, even dingos, rats, cats, and dogs are the predators of the penguin. The water killers are leopard seals, fur seals, whales, and sharks. The whales and sharks only attack penguins of the tropical or sub-tropical environment. Penguins from New Zealand, South Africa, and Australia are most threatened by sharks. Penguins in the antartic are most threatened by seals.&

Help with essay on Penguins

Penguins are said to be probably first seen by the Portuguese explorer Bartholomeu Diaz, although no proof has been discovered of him actually seeing the penguin. The first recorded discovery was by Alvero Vello. He sailed with Vasco de Gama in 147, around the Cape of Good Hope. He wrote in his journal about penguins, for which he called otilicarios. He wrote Theyre as big as ducks, but cannot fly because they have no feathers on their wings. These birds, of which we slaughtered as many as we could, cried like donkeys.... Of course, he failed to realize that penguins do have feathers on their wings, so the reason they cant fly is not because of this.

The dynamics of a particular father daughter relationship are explored through the media of black and white film in Su Friedrich's Sink or Swim. The piece consists almost entirely of short narratives of scenes starting from her early childhood on up through her adult life. Interwoven are breaks from the autobiography to the biography of the father's childhood. The entire dialog is a voice over which emphasizes the biographical nature of the piece. An interesting break in this was when the narrative was taken over by the typewriter in which a letter is being written to the father.

The story begins with the exploration of the daughter's childhood experiences and her oblivion to the family problems that would later be presented to us. This is most exemplified by the narrative retelling a story where the mother had her two daughters on the roof and was threatening the father with their suicide if he didn't come back to them. The daughter felt the urge to wave hello to her father, but was confused as to why her mother stopped her from waving. As the daughter grows older the story follows the relationships of the family as it splits apart and shows various reasons as to why. The daughter takes the burden to herself and internalizes the problems as if it she were the reason her father left.

After their separation and the father's remarriage the daughter gets an opportunity to spend time together exclusively on a trip to Mexico. The trip to Mexico shows how both father and daughter perceive the same events in drastically different ways. The evolving dynamics of the personal relationship between the father and daughter is a consistent theme thought the work as she grows older and the story progresses. This aspect culminates in the self-reflection of seeing herself with her father in the relationship of her father and his new daughter with his last wife.

The very flowing, grainy imagery stands out to me as a good correlation with the memory of a young child and the progression through life. The opposite being the static, sharp focused typewriter near the end when the narrative stops and is taken over by the adult daughter writing a letter to her absent father. Another aspect of the film that stands out to me is the connection of the title, the stories revolving around water, and the father's loss of a sister by drowning. I think the symbolism of crossing the lake as a physical metaphor for a way to more completely understand her father was very well done. Despite the fact she didn't make it across we still get a sense of acceptance and almost closer both from the calmness in her voice when talking about it and the fact that she seemed to overcome her fear of the water moccasins.

WHAT IS MARKETING

1. Marketing is a total system of business activity designed to plan, price, promote and distribute want-satisfying products and services to markets in order to achieve the objectives of the business.

. The Three aspects of marketing are

It is a concept that makes the customer the focus of the business.

Custom Essays on Marketing

It is a function, a 'department' of the business that is responsible for all the 'marketing' activities.

It is a range of techniques from market research, product development, pricing, promotion and distribution.

Marketing is a philosophy that puts the customer at the centre of everything a business does. A business that is truly following a marketing approach will study customers to find out their needs and wants, and then organize all business activities towards providing goods and services to satisfy those needs and wants while achieving the goals of the business.

As a business function, marketing is a set of activities that plans, prices, promotes and distributes goods and services to customers in order to achieve the objectives of the business. To achieve the objectives of the business the marketing department uses a range of activities to identify what customers need and want, then plans the marketing program to deliver that good or service.

. Activities

Can you apply the main principles of marketing to individuals, places and ideas as well as to businesses? If so, how?

Individuals, places and ideas can be perceived on the same basic structure as customers. In order to truly understand a person, a place or an idea, you must first make it the subject of the business. If they are made the focus of the business, then it is possible to create a range of ideas in which will satisfy those wants or needs. Using the techniques of market research, it can be expected, like any consumer in a market, that the demands will be met.

THE ROLE OF MARKETING

1. Marketing is important to a business as it allows the business to know the needs and wants of customers. Changes in these needs and wants help managers predict future needs. By changing the business or the product to meet new needs and wants, a business can keep satisfying its customers with the right gods and services.

IDENTIFYING THE TARGET MARKET

The target market is that part of a market on which the business will focus its marketing activities.

1. There are three main ways to segment a market.

The first is 'mass marketing' where the market is seen as one single unit, a mass 'aggregate' (combined) market.

The second is 'differentiated market', where the market is seen as being made up of smaller segments.

The third is called 'concentrated marketing' where a business selects one single segment of the total market as its target market.

. A market segmented by consumer characteristics attempts to identify and describe the market according to where consumers live, age, gender, level of education, jobs, income, religion and ethnicity, socio-economic class, lifestyle and personality.

The other way of identifying and describing a target market is based on consumers' responses to the product.

'Purchase occasion' describes a market according to which situation people mainly buy a product.

'Product usage' and 'product loyalty' can also describe a market according to consumers' responses to goods and services.

It is also possible to group target markets according to their reason for buy the goods or services.

'Intermediate users' are businesses that buy goods or services to use in their own business or to make other products.

'Final users' are the customers who buy products for their own personal or household use.

. What if?

You are the marketing manager and have to suggest the best ways of segmenting the markets for your business. Choose one of the following products or services and describe how you would identify your target market rail travel.

In segmenting this market, a business needs to consider such things as location of majority of customers, jobs and their relative distance from train stations, income of customers and their traveling habits, socio-economic class and whether the different customer are willing to use the provided transport.

. Case study

Select a business and how it segments its market and the products aimed at each segment.

Nike is a company that sells not only sporting gear and footwear, but also casual wear. Each segment of its market has different styles to match fashion and to appeal to potential customers. Not only do they segment female and male, but also children, teenage and adult wear to suit age as well as gender. Each segment of its market has a different view of the market, giving each age group its own style of clothing and footwear. The women's range of clothing is quite different to the men's range of clothing. As the fashion continues to change, Nike will follow that trend to continue its production lines and profits.

A little something about Visse Dage

When I started the pre-production of Visse Dage (Certain Days) I had just finished another movie full of fast dialog. To do something completely different I decided straight away that the new film should be totally dialogue-free! On the face of it, a very restrictive rule. However, it soon became clear that the limitations imposed by the rule encouraged new ideas. The absence of dialogue made the subjective style attractive and the flashback was an obvious next step. Slowly, the script started to take shape.

My intention in Visse Dage (Certain Days) became to make a film about a person who comes to terms with himself and his mortality. I decided partly because of the absence of dialogue to embody this theme in a story build on a number of flashbacks. These flashbacks were to give a poetic expression to the central problem How can you live your life knowing that death in the end will win the day? The main character will through his memories reach the insight which the spectator will hopefully share that through self-knowledge comes contentment. The character is supposed to reach this enlightenment through the experiences of his whole life. A 6-7 minutes film cannot encompass all of this. So the film focuses on only carefully selected moments from his life or Certain Days. I consciously decided to play down the character's circumstances where he works, if he was married, had children, etc. Instead, I focused on creating a lyrical atmosphere throughout the film a mood that is supposed to keep the central problem in the spectator's mind.

Working with no dialog also gave me a chance to use an alternative method of directing inspired by the Kulesjov-experiment .

Write your A little something about Visse Dage research paper

Instead of discussing the character's intentions, feelings and goals I didn't show the actors the script except the scenes they were in. So they didn't know what kind of expression I was looking for. Instead I told them… just to sit there! Told them to look neutral (and of course I gave then some basic blocking instructions get up, leave the room etc.). Then I just let time pass with the camera rolling (shooting on DV has that advantage). This way I tried to make the main character live to create the intensity not through the acting, but rather through the montage.

My uncle has been there for me since the day that I came into the world. He's been there for me and my family through thick and thin and has been there for me when I was going through some troubles either with my family, school, friends, etc. I would say I'm closer to my uncle then the rest of my family because he listens to what I say, never buts in to have his say he just sits there listens carefully and when I'm finished of what I have to say then he tells me what he thinks and what he could do to help. My parents are somewhat different. I mean they know what I am going through but they don't understand my needs and the way I act. They always say no and give me explanations that I just don't understand and other times they don't give me an explanation at all just no and that's it.

I can tell that my Uncle Jay loves my mom, and that my mom loves my uncle. Who wouldn't? They've been through so much together with the death of both parents (my grandparents) at very young ages, my mom marrying a Jewish man (they were catholic) smoking, etc. They've been through so much and they get closer and closer. Uncle Jay didn't accept that my mom married a Jewish man and changed her religion but soon after he just let it go and learned to accept it. My mom's dad died at 5 because he was an alcoholic and never lived to see my mom's wedding, and my uncle didn't want to walk her down either so my dad's brother or father (I can't remember) had to walk her down the aisle which was very sad. Soon after my mom's mother died of Lung Cancer (I remember it like it was yesterday) it was very upsetting. Even though we live far away from our family, we still make time to visit or talk to them every once in awhile which I love.

My uncle is a priest which is really cool. He does so much to give back to the community and I respect him for that. A couple years ago my uncle was very depressed (we have a history of depression in our family) and he was sent to this psychiatric hospital where we went to see him. He looked fine but that hospital scared me with all those people there. I thought "Jay, why are you here? You shouldn't be here you should be back home and continue working!" But I just kept my mouth shut. I didn't want to upset him more. I had no idea what was wrong but I only know that he didn't feel right with what he's doing. Now he's happier then before, he was pale now he goes to tanning beds which make him look great and he looks more alive now and much younger than before.

Write my Essay on My Uncle Jay for me

I am so great full that he is my uncle; I wouldn't trade him for the world. As I said before he's been with my family through thick and thin, he's been a devoted brother to my mom, and he's very considerate by giving back to the community. I love him so much.
