The Oceania society depicted in the 184 George Orwell novel is simply driven by propaganda. It seems as though every citizen of the "Super State" country must interact with a daily intake of propaganda create by the government so that control is maintained. Even the "non-citizen" Prolitarian community, which is the ignorant majority, is lead into a life filled with propaganda that inflicts feelings such as fear and hatred so that they can be controlled in a mental manner. Every person in Oceania is continually reintroduced to propaganda on a day to day basis so that they adore what their government does and whole heartedly hate any person who is against their ideals. The book is about control. Controlling a majority keeps the minority in place. The government in the novel knows that its citizens can be kept at an appropriate level of control if a lie is constantly told.

As you know everyone in Oceania is working for the benefit of Big Brother. The Party members and inner party members are lead to believe that they are laboring for the good of the country and for their comrades, but in reality they are only working to help Big Brother and the government obtain absolute power. The government makes sure that every level of knowledge in Oceania is obscured. The book written by Goldstein explains how a party member is preferred to be slightly incompetent. The government ensures that even the smallest details of history and literature is falsified to meet the ideals of Big Brother. Winston knew that things such as the "two minutes hate", the constant announcements of winning battles, and even how much supplies the country had are all tools to get the citizens to believe that the government is doing good rather than evil. A constant flow of wartime propaganda is also present throughout the text. The various posters of the Eurasian soldier with "The gun that seems to follow you from whatever angle you are looking at it from" are meant to inflict fear in the citizens and make them feel patriotic.

Not only is the propaganda constant, but it is also changing. One portion of the book Oceania will be at war with Eurasia and then instantly they will be at war with Eastasia. This is shown in the book when Winston was in the street listening to an orator speaking of the war and "In mid-sentence without a shudder in his words" the speaker changed his speech to say that they were now allied with Eurasia and at war with Eastasia. Although the Proles experience propaganda, it is not as abundant as it is with party members. The Proles are controlled with such freedoms as "the lottery" and most importantly thought.

I believe that the government that is shown in 184 is quite a mastermind. It is able to control its citizens with a constant flow of lies. Because the government is perpetually lying to its people then it never has to worry about making a mistake in the truth. The position of the leader Big Brother is propaganda in and of itself so that a constant influx of lies makes no difference in the commander's effectiveness. Without propaganda the totalitarian society of 184 would crumble.

Huckleberry Finn, is it racist or is it anti-racist? The adventures of Huckleberry Finn is a man who goes on lots of adventures with his friend Jim who he has an affinity for who is a black man. In these adventures Huck and Jim get into lots of things like they meet up with ex-cons. The book Huckleberry Finn is a racist book because it uses a lot of racist language and perpetuates stereotypes of African Americans.

Reason number one, In this quotation Huck and Jim talk about how French people talk and Jim gets angry about it. "S'pose a man was to come to you and say Polly-voo-franzy-- what would you think?" "I wouldnt think nuffin; I'd take en bust him over de head, dat is, if he werent white. I wouldnt 'low no nigger to call me dat." This quotation shows that even the black people are racist towards their own race and thats pretty racist if all that they have been taught is that black people are different. My second example is when the are on the ship wreck and they're on the boat. "It warn' the grounding that didnt keep us back but a little. We blowed out a cylinder -head." "Good gracious! anybody hurt?" "No'm. Killed a nigger." This quote shows that the people back then thought that black people weren't even people because when she asked if anybody was hurt they said no, even though that the black person was just killed. My third example is "Miss Watsons nigger, Jim, had a hair-ball as big as your fist, which had been took out of the fourth stomach of an ox, and he used to do magic with it. He said there was a spirit inside of it , and it knowed everything." In this quotation the book is trying to show that the black people are stupid and treated like they are stupid even though they are human beings and they have a brain. What had poor Miss Watson done to you that you could see her nigger go off right under your eyes and never say one single word?" In this quote the arduous Aunt Sally is telling Huck that he is making a futile mistake by saying that how is it that you could let a nigger go. My last quote is, when they are talking in the house about how he let Jim go when he ran, Aunt Sally is an eccentric person who always changes her pattern, and Huck is like the advocate to Jim. "What did that poor old woman do to you that you could treat her so mean?" why, she tried to learn you your book, she tried to learn you your manners, she tried to be good to you every way she knowed how. thats what she done." In this quote they're saying the same thing as the last quote. She has been there for Huck, and she's done so much for him.

This book The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by mark twain is racist because of the language and the stereotypes that are shown in this novel. This should be taught in school because it shows a path that the future people should not go down or use. I think that this book was a really good book. It taught me and it kept me going on it. I respect what was said because of the time frame but in these days it is good to be read so we dont fall into the racist game and also so we dont pull out the race card.

How African American Student Athletes Deal With Going To Predominately White

Colleges Or Universities?

It was March of 00 and I was at my annual cheerleading competition. I am

from an urban public school where my squad is one of the only diverse ones.

Custom Essays on War on Iraq

Looking around I noticed that my squad was one of the few that had any

minorities present. As we sat down to wait our turn for mat time (a practice

run through of the routine before the actual competition) I over heard some of

the Caucasian females snickering from behind about our squad. They were

saying things like black girls are not supposed to be cheerleaders,

cheerleaders are supposed to be white girls with tans. Our cheerleading squad

is one of the most hated and disrespected of all squads. A perfect example of

that disrespect and hatred is the fact that we were robbed at our second

competition. When we got to the competition we were a little apprehensive

because we had to share a small area of the locker room with the LaSalle

cheerleaders. They were our worst enemies, our rivals, our opponents, and the

only people that we went to the competition to try and beat. When one of our

fellow cheerleaders went to the locker room to return some loose money she had

found to her surprise and dismay that all of the other money she had was gone.

She checked and rechecked her wallet to see if she was just not looking well

but to her shock she had not overlooked. She no longer had her money. When

she came and told our coach our whole squad went into the locker room to see

if they too had been robbed. To everyone's sadness they too had been. In

total our squad lost over 00 dollars of hard earned money. Fortunately we

did win second place in the competition but because of that incident we could

not even rejoice. Discrimination and stereotyping against not only black

cheerleaders, but all minorities, as well as people that hang with those

minorities can feel the wrath of it. This happens largely at predominately

white establishments or institutions. Discrimination not only takes place at

school but at other places as well, like my cheerleading competition.

African Americans are being stereotyped every second of every day. Regardless

of what stereotype is said it happens. A very common stereotype placed on

African Americans is "all black people are great athletes." This stereotype

becomes more and more prevalent as further African Americans come to

predominately white colleges or universities. The main reason for stereotypes

is ignorance. An example could be a tall African American with a slim build

walking about the campus. A guarantee could be that the majority of people

would assume that he was an athlete but in all actuality he could be attending

the University of Rhode Island on an academic scholarship. I can remember

talking to my friend and telling him the exciting news of me joining the track

team. The first thing that he said was I know you can run fast, all black

people can run fast. I asked him why he made that assumption and his reply

was, they have to be able to run fast to flee from the cops. Although quite

comical that statement could have quickly made anyone else upset, it was a

perfect example of prejudice and racism.

Still there are other problems that African Americans will have to face when

they come to a predominately white college or university. One example could

be the stress or anxiety to conform to the new lifestyles or style of

teaching. Another could be the high drop out rate of first year African

American students that is hung over their heads. Yet another could be the

effect the school, professors or area has on the black student. (Spigner

1) Many different things regardless of how big or small have been known to

create anxiety or stress. Many people are not happy with change. Most will

try to avoid it at all costs, so the mere shift of moving to a predominately

white college or university could drive anyone insane. Lastly there is

racism. Racism is not what it used to be many differences have risen over the

years. Decades ago African Americans would never have been given the

opportunity to go to school. If they were given that right the school was not

a knowledgeable one. African Americans would not have been able to play

sports, be on television or vote. Racism is still a widely studied issue.

The issue in the last couple of years has been the ignorance people have to

the fact that they are being racist. Decades ago racism was defined as the

blatant disregard for someone else or their feelings. It is not that obvious

anymore, but that does not mean in any way that it has stopped.

Racism as a whole is no longer blatant. Atwell (11) article discusses how

racism is no longer as openly spoken as before but someone of African American

decent could be dealing with racism from their professor or athletic coach and

not even know it. With the student athlete programs the lines of academics

and sports is blurred. Academic support services may instead be aiding and

abetting a racial status quo by emphasizing more of a social desire for sports

entertainment (Atwell 11). That quote is stating that academics seem not to

be as important as how the school does entertainment wise.

It is argued here that targeting student athletes ostensible to provide

academic guidance may in actuality serve to reinforce sports interests over

educational pursuits. Such expropriation seems particularly significant (but

not exclusive) on white campuses, in part because such campus illustrate a

glaring over-representation of black players. (The Chronicle of Higher

Education June 17, 1, as cited in Spigner, 1).

There are many ways that schools of higher learning try to make the academics

of African American players seem up to par when in reality they are only

mediocre, maybe even less. Wiley and Hatchett (11) pointed out that

institutions of higher learning used misleading or inconclusive data to make

the dismal student graduation rates look better. Edwards (18a; 18b; 184,

187, 1, as cited in Spigner.) has long noticed the contradictions and

hypocrisy of providing a meaningful education against the more sought after

national publicity and notoriety from intercollegiate sports.

There are many questions as to whether or not these African American athletes

can perform as well in the classroom as they can on the field or on the court.

Research conducted by Ellickson (10) showed that participation in college

athletics saps the energy needed for a more positive classroom performance.

Engstrom and Sedlacek's (11) study of existence of prejudice among the peers

of student athletes indicated that students generally possessed some negative

attitudes towards the student athletes, particularly regarding academic

performance. Smallman, Sowa, Young, and Bryce (11) feel as though the

research of the ethnic differences in student athlete responses to stressful

life events revealed that blacks reported significantly higher ratings of

evasiveness or stress.

There are many reasons why student athletes are not becoming successful

adults. One reason is because there are fewer teachers of African American

decent. The potential of African American student athletes to graduate is

seriously compromised by the fact that so few staff, faculty and other

students on campus look like them. They feel less welcomed than white students

on our campuses (Lapchick, 17).

On most college campuses the over representation of black student athletes is

as stark as the under representation of black teachers. In 18-10, only

4.5 percent of black faculty compared to 88.5 percent of white faculty were

employed full time in a U.S. college or university (Chronicle of Higher

Education Almanac, August 6, 1 as cited in Spigner, 1). A larger black

presence of faculty particularly on white campuses could theoretically promote

a better climate to help improve black student athlete development, though

black teachers have their own problems of profession survival. (Banks, 184;

Spigner, 10-11, as cited in Spigner, 1).

In the fall of 185 black faculty were decreasingly represented in ranks of

assistant, associate, and full time professor. The percentage of this was 5.

percent, .7 percent, and . percent of full time African American

instructors. The white professors ranked the same way, had increased

representation at 87.5 percent for an assistant, 0.5 percent for an

associate, and .7 percent respectively for full time college professors

(National Center for Education Statistics, 1 as cited in Spigner, 1).

Stress and anxiety can and have been known to overtake people of all ages and

ethnicity's. They have been known to push people to the limit and test their

strength, because of these limits some people are unable to pull through. If

you are faced with stress or anxiety and cannot withstand the trauma you may

obtain disorder. For those that can face the trauma will make it through to

live and fight another day. African Americans in a new environment,

preferably a white college campus will probably have to deal with some of

those everyday traumas of the world. If they do not learn how to endure, they

too could succumb to a stress or anxiety disorder.

Abstract

How African American student athletes deal with being at a predominately

white college or university? There are many reasons why African Americans

would not succeed at an all white college or university. One reason would be

the racism that remains prevalent in white communities as well as schools.

Racism comes from the most unexpected people and places. The fact that racism

is not as noticeable as in the past makes it harder to see. Another problem

African Americans have at white colleges is the stress or anxiety to conform

to their new surroundings. The pressure of academic success is another that

could cause stress or anxiety. Lastly, the slack that African Americans

receive because they are students as well as athletes at these schools can

cause numerous amounts of stress. Many people feel as though students have it

easier because of the fact that they are athletes. These are the main topics

I will be speaking of in my paper.

Religious freedom has been an issue throughout the world all through history. Since religion existed there have been conflicts and persecution of other because they had different beliefs. Religious freedom in the British North American colonies prior to 1700 was important to a very large extent because there was so little.

First there were the Puritans. They were persecuted in Europe, but were one of the dominant faiths in the British colonies in North America. The Puritans believed in religious uniformity so of course this led to harsh laws against anyone who didn't follow the basic Puritan principles. People such as Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson were expelled because they spoke out against the Puritans. They also imposed harsh punishments that went as far as death sentences for those who went against them.

The Jews were another group that made their way to the Americas. The first group of Jews to arrive in the Americas was a small shipload of refugees from Dutch Brazil. Jews endured many hardships with religious prosecution. In some places death penalties were placed on Jews for the sole reason that they were Jewish. Many of these penalties also applied to atheists.

Quakers were another prominent faith in the British North American colonies. Quakers are sometimes referred to as "radical Puritans." This extremely religious group of people was persecuted severely in England so many of them migrated to the colonies. They did still face some religious persecution but they did create many prosperous towns as well as having Pennsylvania to themselves.

Custom writing service can write essays on The extent to which religious freedom existed in the colonies prior to 1770.

Roman Catholics were one of the most prosecuted religions in the British colonies. They were forced to leave England because of extreme persecution. After landing in Maryland they slowly became a smaller and smaller minority. Once the Glorious Revolution ended Roman Catholics were deprived of many rights such as the right to vote, hold office, or worship publicly.

Since the first colonists arrived the struggle for religious freedom began in the Americas. The different religious conflicts affected to a large degree the way many of the colonies developed. Such things such as the Salem Witch Trials show the religious tension in the colonies. Because of the lack of toleration in the colonies such as the harsh persecution of Catholics and the death penalty placed on Jews and Atheists as well as people who just disagreed it led to the different developments of the colonies.

One instant message would change the course of two lives forever. This is our story. We have been married for almost 5 years now

September 11, 16 Was the evening I first received an instant message on AOL Canada from the man who is now my husband. Who knew how it would turn out.

Were approaching our 5 year anniversary, and I am just in wonder every day how we met.

My name is Kimberly. I first got on the internet in December 15 but never really thought of its potential to find me a husband.

I was 8 and had had my share of bad relationships. I have had my share of pain and heartache. The wrong person, the wrong relationship, for too long. And scars for a lifetime. The relationship from hell ended years ago. I have had time to heal and make a happy life for myself. Oh sure, I didnt mind if I found a soulmate in my life, after all I am like everybody else and its always a nice thing to have. Hey, anytime. But life was too good after being in hell for years, and the last thing on my mind was to become romantically involved with anyone. I cherished my years of freedom and pain-free heart.

I was moving on in life, brushing aside the failed romance episode and eagerly biting into a life with plenty of years ahead of me to enjoy. In fact, I had resigned myself to a life without the soulmate thing. I had resigned myself to a solitary life, convinced I could never find anyone who felt the world with the same sensitivity I did. Whose heart beat at the same rhythm. Whose thoughts were the same, so much so that you could finish each other sentences and know each others thoughts. Imagine that.

Relationships and marriage become such heavy work on a daily basis that you have to be sure to marry someone you love and not someone you settle for.

Of course I was aware of the chat room syndrome and all the personal ads and pages out there promising to find your significant other, for free or at a price. I stayed clear of those. I had no interest or belief in their ability to have me meet anyone, and I wasnt interested in becoming involved anyway. I knew perfection was no part of this world, so my sad fate was to live it only in my head. In fact, I had carefully pushed aside and kept OUT of my head any thoughts relating to heart matters.

Then I received a Instant Message from a wonderful guy named Jordan. He sent me an e-TeddyBear.

After talking on line for a while and on the phone for hours for two nights we decided to meet and go out on a real date. The date was planned for a Friday the 1th....can we say scarry!

Everyone kept telling me he was probably an axe murderer but I didnt listen. I played it safe by letting everyone know where I was going. We went to pulic places and we had a wonderful 10 hour date.

When I dropped him off after the date he said those famous last words Ill call you. What do you know, before lunch the next day he called me.

Five months later we were engaged and a year and a half later we were married. On June 8, 00 we will celebrate our 5th year of marriage. Who knew that a computer and a thing called the internet could find my soul mate. We are very happy together and love each other very much.

I wish everyone could be as lucky.

Is nuclear energy good or bad?

Nuclear energy is defined by Webster's Encyclopaedia as energy from the inner core or nucleus of the atom, as opposed to energy released in chemical processes, which is derived from the electrons surrounding the nucleus. Thus, since the atom was split, releasing nuclear energy for the first time, it ushered in a new era of political, economic and social debate in the history of humankind. For the first time humanity had to grapple with the intricacies that this new nuclear age brought with it. People had to struggle with the dichotomy of nuclear energy, in time recognising both the benefits and the drawbacks associated with nuclear energy. Thus, over time as people became more educated and the level of awareness about nuclear energy was raised (especially during the activist years of 160's and 170's) the question is nuclear energy good or bad was increasingly being asked.

This essay will therefore discuss the value of nuclear energy. It will focus on very pertinent issues that have long been debated in the area of nuclear energy. These issues include aspects such as nuclear waste, environmental costs, nuclear safety, nuclear sustainability and nuclear weapons.

Nuclear wasteOrder College Papers on Nuclear Energy Good or BAd

The fuels in nuclear power reactors are a major source of the most dangerous and most radioactive waste produced. In the last 50 years, irradiated fuel has been responsible for 5% of radioactivity generated. 500 pounds of plutonium and approximately 0 tons of high-level radioactive waste are produced by a 1000-megawatt nuclear power plant on average each year.

Nuclear waste is thus a very important and real problem that society has to deal with. Governments and private nuclear plants have to adequately and effectively deal with the safe removal of nuclear waste. When not done so, nuclear waste has the potential to become a very bad negative outcome from the use of nuclear power and energy. Nuclear waste is thus an instance that shows that nuclear energy can be construed as 'bad.'

Environmental Costs

The nuclear fuel cycle, which generates electricity from nuclear energy, releases carbon dioxide during mining, fuel enrichment and plant construction. Carbon dioxide intensivity is increased during uranium mining. As uranium mining proliferates as the demand for electrical energy and new nuclear plant construction increases, so will carbon dioxide levels in the earth's atmosphere. In contrast to renewable energy, nuclear energy generates four to five times more CO per unit of energy produced, taking into account the total nuclear fuel cycle.

Another somewhat startling fact is that the United Stated government allows the release of radioactive water into the environment at "permissible" levels. One can also not obtain a true and accurate picture of the exact amounts of nuclear and radioactive wastes and emissions leaked into the air, water and soil as the figures for these are not available, according to the nuclearfiles.org website.

At these rates, the earth's atmosphere and ecosystem will soon be unable to cope with the amounts of waste and radioactivity injected into it. For these reasons, the impact of nuclear energy and waste has high environmental costs. Many people thus see nuclear energy's impact on the environment as a negative cost that will inevitably not be sustained over the long term. For these reasons the Kyoto Protocol has been drawn up. It is an attempt to limit the negative impact that nuclear energy has on the environment. It is also an indication of the global trend in recognising that the costs of the nuclear age is and will continue to catch up with humanity. President Bush of the United States by refusing to sign the protocol and align the United States with the principles of the Kyoto Protocol has angered many in the international community.

Nuclear safety

There have been concerns around the use of nuclear energy as well as the storage of nuclear weapons. Repetitive problems have occurred with security, safety and environmental impact in the nuclear industry. High levels of radioactivity are thus dangerous to human health and well being. Safety at nuclear plants and reactors is therefore vital. Human error plays a major part in nuclear safety as in the case of the Chernobyl disaster in the Ukraine. There a nuclear leak caused by nuclear heating in a non pressurised boiling water nuclear reactor. The fallout killed over 50 people, thousands of square miles were contaminated and clouds of radioactive isotopes were found as far away as Sweden. Anxiety over the use of nuclear energy has been heightened by the Chernobyl disaster as well as accidents at Windscale in the UK and Five Mile Island in the US. Since governments do not recognise the dangers of radiation and radiation sickness nuclear safety is still a controversial subject.

Nuclear Weapons

Aligned to the issue of nuclear safety is the presence of nuclear weapons and arms. Nuclear weapons including the atom bomb, the hydrogen bomb and the neutron bomb and the vast numbers of weapons the world's superpowers have amassed, have left those holding the power with the ability to destroy the world many times over. For many years during the cold war between the democratic west and the communist east, the world lived in fear of a nuclear winter. This is obviously a negative aspect associated with the nuclear age.

While this essay thus far has discussed the negative aspects associated with nuclear energy, there are some benefits that go along with the use of nuclear energy. These will now be focussed on/

The Benefits of Nuclear Energy/Nuclear Sustainability

· Safety.

While no source of electrical power generation is completely safe, nuclear power has a remarkable record. About 0% of electricity generated in the U.S. comes from nuclear power, and in the last forty years of this production, not one single fatality has occurred as a result of the operation of a civilian nuclear power plant in the United States, Western Europe, Japan, or South Korea. No other form of energy production can even come close.

· Zero risk of large-scale oil spills.

Incidentally, getting rid of our dependence on imported oil is desirable not only from an environmental standpoint, but from a political one. The largest single activity of our military today is ensuring the security of the Middle East for U.S. interests. As far as the risk of large oil spills, the Exxon Valdez spill of 18 was one of the worst environmental disasters in history.

· Economical.

Nuclear power plants are one of the most economical forms of energy production. Fuel costs for an equivalent amount of power run from 1/rd to 1/6th the cost for fossil production, and capital and non-fuel operating costs are roughly equivalent, resulting in the overall cost of nuclear generation of electricity running 50% to 80% that of other sources. This is in spite of the fact that capital costs have been hugely inflated due to lawsuits, court injunctions, and other delaying tactics used by individuals and organizations opposed to nuclear power.

· Reliability.

Nuclear power plant capacity factors average about 75%. This is about equivalent to those of fossil fired plants, and since nuclear plants are required by the NRC to shut down for what often amounts to trivial reasons, that would indicate they are actually more reliable than fossil plants. Wind and Solar power cant come close to the capacity factors of nuclear power, for obvious reasons.

· Sustainability.

Even if Uranium mining were stopped today, the use of breeder reactors (which create more fuel than they use) would permit us to continue generating electricity at present levels for over a thousand years into the future.

Conclusion

There are thus benefits as well as well as drawbacks associated with nuclear energy. The advances made for humanity through the use of nuclear power has been significant (as seen through the advantaged of nuclear energy discussed in the previous section). However, the dangers associated with nuclear energy in the shape of weapons of mass destruction and the danger and potential of nuclear leaks and reactor meltdowns has also made people more apprehensive about nuclear energy. This contradiction that the nuclear age has brought the world makes it very challenging for one to decisively say that nuclear energy has been entirely good or entirely bad. This is because the inherent dangers in the use of nuclear energy mirror the dangers that were brought with other inventions and innovations that advanced and changed the shape of society, such as automobiles and air travel. Both these modes of transport present very real risks to the person that chooses to use it. However, there are also many benefits, making it difficult for a realist to say that the automobile has been good or bad.

This form of logic and analysis can be applied to the use of nuclear energy in society. We have to recognise the benefits that we have derived from it. If society had to continue using coal and other such sources as fuel, the world, with its exponential population explosion could very well have run out of these sources by now. It is for this reason that I recognise the value that the nuclear age has brought humanity and thus would have to agree that nuclear energy can be good. This is not an endorsement of nuclear weapons in any way. I recognise the potential for harm that they bring to the world at large and their use by governments as a form of threat in lieu of diplomacy violates ethical and moral guidelines and principles, when the norm of reciprocity should ideally dictate international relations and geopolitics. My recognition that nuclear energy as a good factor in society also comes with a further limitation; that safety and security at power plants and reactors be made the most important factor so that the safety of the community in which the plant is located is ensured.

"Do what you love and you will never have to work a day in your life." Confucius

At thirty-two, I came at Chubb to gain the skill sets I needed to move forward in my career. About a year ago, like many Americans, I found myself "downsized" out of a job. After recovering from the shock, I decided that this otherwise unfortunate turn of events would present an excellent opportunity to pursue my passion for IT. I already have a Bachelor of Arts in English from Emory University, so I really was not looking for another Bachelor's degree. I needed job specific skills that would make me employable; skills that would help me advance to the next level. My positions to date are describable as functional with technical overtones. I found that I currently occupy a middle ground between functional user and application analyst. Yet, I discovered upon interviewing for technical positions, many employers wanted experience I didn't have. I have always been computer savvy, but did not have the professional training I needed. A decision to "do what I love" entailed returning to school.

I chose Chubb Institute because of their excellent reputation in the IT training industry. Chubb offers many advantages immersion-style training in a true-to-life working environment, industry case studies and instructors recruited from the IT industry who offer invaluable career support and advice. Chubb's newly developed Database Administration Program seemed to be the best choice to fill in my resume gaps. Databases and database applications have always fascinated me. For years I have worked on Oracle platform applications and had a firm grasp of the tenets and rules that govern databases. Additionally, I have always enjoyed troubleshooting and problem solving. My job responsibilities often expand to encompass being the unofficial helpdesk/application support person for my colleagues. I thoroughly enjoy my coursework at Chubb and believe this program provides an excellent mix of practical and theoretical foundations that will further my career aspirations. All of these factors will prepare me for an entry-level IT career working with Oracle. Eventually I aspire to become a Database Administrator or Application Developer. I currently work for a company as a payroll specialist, which ordinarily could be a niche "stuck there forever" (read dead-end) type of job. However my current company offers much room for advancement as they are technology-driven and prolific Oracle users, both internally and externally. I see myself building on my skill set to move from the front-end to the back-end of the application. I feel as if Chubb has given me an "IT toolbox" to support me in a career that will hopefully last a lifetime

The poems that I have read were ¡°Lot¡¯s wife¡±, ¡°Richard Cory¡± and ¡°warren Pryor¡±. Those poems reminded me how our day-to-day lives affect what we think and the ways we act. How and why lot and his wife, Richard Cory and ¡°the people on the pavement¡±, Warren Pryor and his parents looked the world and their lives diversely.

When we read ¡°Lot¡¯s Wife¡±, it is easy to find out that Lot was a saint. He looked the world and his life through the God¡¯s words, all of his every day life was prayer and communicating with God. Just like what we read in this poem said ¡°It is easy for eyes that have always turned to heaven not to look back.¡± Lot could easily obey what God had told him and headed himself to ¡°Zoar¡± without looking back. It was all because he was not really live his life in that town, all his spiritual life was related to God. On the other hand, his wife lived in a normal life. It was her who did all the house work, fed the children, and dealt with all the problems that happened in their realistic life with her neighbors and friends. That was the reason she could not help herself to look back. She might think that her whole life was ended when the town was damaged, so it was not so important if she could get to ¡°Zoar¡±.

Richard Cory had everything; he was well-knowledge, rich, honorable and handsome. Just like ¡°the people on the pavement¡± thought ¡°he was everything to make us wish that we were in his place.¡± That summer night when Richard Cory committed the suicide, he left such a big question to ¡°the people on the pavement¡± that was ¡°what was the purpose of lives¡±. They thought Richard¡¯s life was their dreams, but it was exploded. The author never mentioned about why Richard Cory chose to die, from my points of view, maybe his life too perfect, it made him felt so empty and boring. But those kinds of stuff would never seem understandable for the people who struggle for their living for every single day.

When Warren Pryor felt ¡°like a young bear inside his teller¡¯s cage¡±, and ¡°aching with empty strength and throttled rage.¡± His parents thought ¡°he was saved from their thistle-strewn farm and its red dirt.¡± This is the most ironic part of this poem, Warren Pryor did what in his parents¡¯ eyes was good for him, and left himself in those painful dissatisfaction. His parents thought they made him away from the hardest life in ¡°the stony fields¡±, but they would never thought about it was not what Warren¡¯s choice at all, and how much that Warren loved their farm as a place where he had grown up and belonged to.

Help with essay on Lot's Wife

In conclusion, those three poems mentioned us a lot about people in different religions, different social classes and different generations have totally different viewpoints about their lives and dreams. It is hard for one to understand another because the people¡¯s concept of lives are depended what they experienced and what they learned.

Learning Stlyes

If you order your custom term paper from our custom writing service you will receive a perfectly written assignment on Learning Stlyes. What we need from you is to provide us with your detailed paper instructions for our experienced writers to follow all of your specific writing requirements. Specify your order details, state the exact number of pages required and our custom writing professionals will deliver the best quality Learning Stlyes paper right on time.

Our staff of freelance writers includes over 120 experts proficient in Learning Stlyes, therefore you can rest assured that your assignment will be handled by only top rated specialists. Order your Learning Stlyes paper at affordable prices!

According to the Learning Styles Inventory my weakest modalities are visual and auditory and my strongest is kinesthetic. I strongly agree with my strongest modality being kinesthetic because throughout my years of education, I have always had my best experience of learning when I was able to participate in the learning process. The hands-on experience allows me to understand what I am learning in a more coherent manner.

As a child in elementary school I would always experience getting into trouble for not being able to sit still for long periods of time. I found that paying attention and not being able to move around was very difficult so out feelings of restlessness I would talk to people around me, I would make rude comments and fidget around with any objects. Consequently, this would lead to bad behaviour marks and detention time.

As I matured and entered high school and subsequently college, I was able to sit and pay attention for longer periods of time but I also realized that I learned best when I could physically be involved in what I was learning. In high school, when we were able to do projects that involved making charts, videos, maps etc, I found that I enjoyed my learning experience much more and it was reflective in my grades. When studying for major exams, walking around and repeating what I was reading out loud helped me remember and the information became clearer. I also experienced better grades when I was involved in extra-curricular activities, mainly sports. Being physically active assisted me in staying focused on homework and allowed me to manage my time much more efficiently.

Study strategies that I currently use that is more related to the visual modality are such things as copying information into my own words, because seeing information rephrased in my own words helps me to remember information more easily, and I also highlight certain important facts. Using colour to make certain bits of information stand out helps me to study more effectively. During this semester I would like to try using flash cards to study and when I am reading charts, graphs, or printed information, I would like to take time to visualize what I just read in my mind. Study strategies more related to the auditory modality that I currently practice include verbally explaining information to an imaginary person, and I frequently recite what I just read in my own words. Another study strategy that I would like to try include is studying with a partner so when I have questions, I have instant access to another persons point of view. As a kinesthetic I currently use strategies such as walking around when studying and I learn best by incorporating objects as a visual aid. For example when solving problems I use objects around to assist me so I can be involved in what I am learning. Other methods of learning that I would like to try during this semester include using exaggerated hand movements and expressions; this consists of using role-playing and pantomime to assist in my studies.

According to the Dominance Inventory, I scored between a four and a seven, which puts me into the category of being able to use either side of my brain without relying too much on one specific side. I agree with this because I often times switch back and forth in my learning techniques. Initially I believed I used the right side of my brain more, making me a global learner, because during high school I faired much better in more generalized, non-specific studies such as Social Studies or English as oppose to more logical learning such as math. While I was doing the inventory, I realized that there are often times when I learn best by structural and logical boundaries. I enjoy learning from logical arguments as oppose to abstract ones where no real conclusion is ever achieved. Many times over generalizing and analyzing abstract information, for example studying poetry, can be very frustrating and I often times feel bored and see no real distinct point. Knowing that I do not rely to heavily on either side of my brain allows me to try to incorporate methods from either side. This will ensure that I can be experienced in using both sides of my brain so I am able to choose freely which side I would like to use depending on the current assignment.

I¡¦ve always believed that I learn best by myself because I am generally an independent person so I would assume that I learn best independently. I realize now that although I do still feel that I learn best independently I can also learn effectively, depending on the type of class, from interacting with different people and sharing our ideas or also from a more structural approach. Classes where the learning is more logical and the class itself is more structured by nature such as a math class, I would prefer to learn from clear and rigid instructions. Knowing exactly what the teacher expects and having step-by-step instructions keeps me on track and I find that I am able to keep up with the pace of the class more readily.

Classes such as foreign language classes and computer classes where the atmosphere is more light and relaxed, I find that I learn best by interacting with other people and sharing our ideas. When an entire class is learning a new language, having a group to learn something new with where each person is on the same level and no one person is far superior than the other is more comfortable because there is no sense of competition. People are able to laugh and learn freely. Similarly with a computer class, assignments are usually less rigid allowing you to express yourself and work cooperatively in groups.

When I am reading or writing I like to work alone and have complete silence. Having the quietness allows me to think clearly without the distractions of other people. Especially while reading, I find that I am distracted easily; as a result, I like to read alone and not be in the presence of potential distractions. Also I understand best what I am reading when I can read out loud, so out of consideration for other people, I find that it is best that I am alone. Many times I find that it is hard to study in libraries because I am not able to read out loud or pace back and forth without distracting others. I generally just fall asleep when trying to study in a library. By knowing how I learn best I am able to use that specific method depending on what classes I am currently enrolled in. For example, this semester I am enrolled in a math class and knowing that I like structure in that type of course I would approach the teacher if he were not giving out enough guidelines for me to follow. I am also enrolled in a CSS class and a English class and because English involves reading and writing I would most likely tend to work independently in that course and I would work best interactively in my CSS class.

My strengths according to Howard Gardner¡¦s Theory of Multiple Intelligences are logical/mathematical, Verbal/Linguistic, and Interpersonal. My weaknesses include Visual/Spatial and Naturalist. When listening to lectures or debates, I enjoy hearing logical explanations and arguments and being able to distinguish fact from fiction with logical evidence. Similarly, with my Verbal/Linguistic strength, I enjoy debates from a logical perspective. I like to express my views to others so they are able to understand my points coherently. When dealing with a team or just a group of friends, I like to incorporate everyone and get everyone involved. I enjoy socializing with different people and creating bonds with them. I feel a sense of responsibility towards my friends and to the general public to assist those who approach me for help. I try as much as possible to help a little more than is asked from me so others can feel less stressed. These traits help to highlight my Interpersonal strengths.

I have never done too well in classes that dealt with things that involve life entities and the environment either from a lack of interest or for other reasons so that is the reason why Naturalist is one of my weaknesses. In high school I enrolled in a biology class. The class was fairly difficult for me to follow despite the fact that I kept pace with all the homework assignments. My lack of interest for the subject was representative in my overall grade. Visual/Spatial is another of my weaknesses because I do not possess much artistic ability. Knowing how far something is from me or how fast it is coming towards me is sometimes very hard for me to determine.

Having now a comprehensible idea of what are my strengths, I would enrol in classes that emphasis these strengths and minimize my weaknesses. As of this point I am not too sure what career path I am aiming for but knowing what areas I have strength in puts into perspective what are my potential options. Until I choose a career path I could spend time on strengthening my weak areas so that I can broaden my career options and eventually choose one that is suitable to my learning style and that one in which I enjoy.

An essential virtue for human beings, patience has an important place in our lives and one of the most critical has been patience in profession. The neck-breaking speed of changes and growth, higher and higher career ambitions and the fire in the belly to deliver the best has led to "Impatient professionalism". We have started measuring professionals by the speed by which they deliver their tasks; we have created our own standards for it. With the speedy expectations and then due to the unmet expectations, speedy conclusions are made which obviously have very high chances of being wrong. A co-worker not responding to my phone-call with the frequency I expect, a co-worker not delivering at the time I thought he/she should, or a co-worker not writing mails to satisfy my expected "mail-contents" is branded as unprofessional and dumb, and is sometimes named a wrong person at a wrong place. Impatiently I start look for a quick-fix solution to make things happen.

In the race to be the most successful ahead of all, I have forgotten the core values of a workplace. The workplace consists of multiple souls working together to achieve a common goal a common goal (of profitability and so on) by delivering in time while following the set business processes. Leaders have set the business process and set the time too to complete the tasks. Interestingly, a leader does understand the collective output of these souls within the process and has set the timeline accordingly. This is why he/she is a leader and in fact this is the most important virtue of the leaders; they understand beyond what normal people can. So I see that I am running hard to be a big success, to be a leader, but I am missing the very virtue in the frenzy.

Now the big question How do I do it? It certainly is not possible within a day or two; there is no quick fix for it. It does require patience to observe and understand before jumping to conclusions. In order to achieve this level of understanding I require a paradigm shift; the way I perceive situations and people in them. Every one of us is different; some are slow in writing mails, some are uncomfortable with phone and prefer meeting in person, some "are" slow in completing their tasks but still they are responsible enough to do their work. Many people haven't had the chance to get into Ivy League schools and rigorous study schedules, and so they cannot analyze situations on the fly. Such backgrounds or many more similar ones do not make people a clumsy worker; in fact, they are probably more meticulous than I think they are because they are aware of their limitations. Eventually, I need to "slow down" and think, and put my analysis to understand the given real-life situation. I need to understand my co-workers, the limitations and the strengths they posses, and that there are ways to do things differently at different pace. Once I am able to see that there are dozens of ways of solving a problem I will be able to understand what could be the best in what situation. Probably I was wrong all the time (I still need to learn a lot and I am learning!) or I was right, and now I can convince a better way through my team.

Trifles was a play based on a real life tragedy. A tragedy in which a man was found strangled in his bed while the wife unknowingly sleeps. The author, Susan Glaspell, was on staff at the Des Moines Daily News when the murdered occurred. The play is said to draw upon a detective's story. However, the drama was not only written for mystery but was also written to show how women were treated around her time.

The story begins when the sheriff, his wife Mrs. Peters, the County Attorney Mr. Henderson, Mr. and Mrs. Hale returns to the Wrights farmhouse looking for evidence. Mr. Hale was asked by the County Attorney to walk through, what had happen yesterday morning when he had arrived at the house. Mr. Hale stated that he came to the house and Mrs. Wright was sitting in her rocker, looking strange rocking back and forth. When Mr. Hale asked if he could see her husband ( Mr. Wright ) she said no but when asked if he was home. She had said yes but that he was dead up stairs with a rope around his neck.

The next few minutes of conversation was between Mr. Henderson and Mrs. Hale. Mr. Henderson was making side remarks about Mrs. Wright's housekeeping, while Mrs. Hale tried to defend not only he but also farm wives in general. The men had gone up stairs in attempt to gather more evidence. The women were down stairs collecting some of Mrs. Wright's personal belongings to take to her in jail. While searching for these items they find a dead bird with a broken neck wrapped in silk in her sewing box but the women decided not to show this new evidence to the men.

By writing this play Susan Glaspell was not only trying to show the world a murder but was trying to show how women in general were treated during her time. Trifles was a way to express her-self. So the world could see how women were being treated as a whole. If you read the play there are hints with-in it, which shows the woman's place in society.

One example of this is when Mr. Henderson was making snide remarks about the cleanliness of the house. It's not always the woman's place to clean the house and that was one of the finer points Glaspell was trying to make.

Another example of this is when the women were talking downstairs while the men were upstairs gathering evidence. Mr. Hale had made the comment; how Mrs. Wright use to were pretty clothes and sing in the church but no longer did these things after marriage. I believe that her husband made her stop doing these things that she had loved to do before marriage. The killing of the bird was just the snapping point for Mrs. Wright. I believed that she did kill her husband in a way to escape his abuse mentally. In Mrs. Wright's time it wasn't a women's place to speak up or even against her husband. The wife was basically a puppet at her husband's disposal.

Glaspell is a very emotional and movating writer, which made good points around her time. She was one of the few people who have tried to pave the way for women, as well as open up the eyes of not just her community but the eyes of the world as a whole.

My assumption is that Polaroid's growth strategy was based solely on the technology involved and development of its Polarizing process. They remained driven by this process and attempted to stay one step ahead of the competition prior to the 170s.

Based on the development strategy that Polaroid employed in the early years, there are many factors one can blame, the environment, the customer, the competition, but the responsibility lay with the upper management of the company. They should have been focusing in on changing the foresight of its vision to adapt to the changing marketplace. This could have been achieved by vigilant monitoring of what the competition was doing and specifically what the customer wants. The Company made to attempt to adapt to the Technological changes that was rapidly gaining ground around their business with the aim of keeping competitive.

To summarize, the human resource plan in the 150s, 160s and 170s was to grow its employee base sufficiently enough to deal with the increasing attractiveness of its breakthrough product, they also harnessed skilled employees that could helped the organization develop innovative products and by extension grow the organization, their was no strategic plan for the future. This compared to the plan for the 180s and 10s which was to develop new innovative products aligned with technological changes in the industry and to train and re-train the staff to adapt to the advances in technology to better prepare its human resources for the possibility of job loss as the company downsized.

Cutbacks and retrenchment had a profound effect on the company's human resource plan during the declining years, because employees were going to be sent home. In 188 Polaroid went through a major downsizing, eliminating 8,500 jobs, a further 5% cut was announced in 15 to further destabilize the company. We feel that the fall in employment at Polaroid was really a product of lack of foresight, willingness to adapt to changing markets, and the inability to adequately identify their target market. The Human resource plan for the 80's and 0's shifted towards preparation for layoff and certain downsizing and leaned more towards training and development. The company's human resource plans together with the overall business plan would have had to deal with the reactions of its main suppliers, loyal customers and entrenched employees. We believe that cutback could be have been avoided, this with a enhanced growth strategy plan in place, employees who were doing what would be considered duplicate jobs could have been retrained and sent to other departments. Employees who had valuable skills that are sought in the work environment, but would be harmful if no longer available to the company could have been contracted out to other companies who are having a hard time filling jobs of a technical nature. Polaroid should have developed their workforce sufficiently so they could have moved them around when certain positions become obsolete.

Many companies in the United States have either folded or are struggling due to lack of vision or competitiveness. A good example of this would be Kmart loss of ground to Wal-Mart.

In the novel The Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, Milkman (Macon III Dead) gradually progresses in the process of self-actualization. Throughout the course of the novel, Milkman is constantly absorbed in himself. By the conclusion of the novel we find that he has finally realized the heritage and culture to which he is a part of. It is through various experiences and meetings that Milkman finally "awakens" in closing of the novel. Morrison used the techniques of diction and realism to portray Milkman's journey to discover himself and his family roots. The culmination of these literary techniques and the experiences that Milkman goes through, Morrison was successful in freeing Milkman of avarice and replacing it with an appreciation for his cultural and familial roots.

Milkman's road to awareness begins with his parents; Macon Dead and Ruth Foster Dead. His parents served as an impediment, as they hindered his ability to figure out his true authentic identity. So the first "stepping stone" that Milkman had to climb and surpass was that of escaping the suppressed world that his parents subjected him to. Ruth breast-fed Macon III (Milkman) until he was six years old. Milkman would be forced to oblige under his mother's commands. As Morrison wrote, "…he was old enough to be bored by the flat taste of mother's milk, so he came reluctantly, as to a chore…"(1). Morrison portrayed the scene through the use of both diction and realism. Through her word choice (diction), Morrison portrayed the reluctant behavior of Milkman in relation to being breast-fed at such an old age. Realism was used to portray the feelings Ruth felt. She was at a point in her life where things were meaningless and no one expressed any love towards her. By breast-feeding Milkman, she experienced a sense of pleasure. "She had the distinct impression that his lips were pulling from her a thread of light"(1). This light referred to the daily pleasure she needed to sustain her life. This situation of Ruth was important in the development of Milkman's personality and character. Ruth believed that she possessed no authenticity, and that she was insignificant and secluded from the world. By passing these negative attributes and emotions to Milkman, she disturbed his natural process for growth, and ultimately left him feeling lost and insecure. Instead of encouraging Milkman to grow and mature, Ruth forced him into the world that she herself despised. Through the use of diction and realism, Morrison depicted the situation that Milkman was in at the start of the novel.

Morrison portrays Milkman's first step towards self-actualization indirectly through the use of realism and diction, as stated earlier. The lack of proper support and motivation, Milkman was a disadvantage growing up. He lacked guidance, honesty, and most importantly, an identity. There was within him an inner turmoil that disappeared only after he freed himself from his restraining parents. Milkman is going through the same experience his mother had and went through her entire life. Morrison wrote, "…because the fact is that I am a small woman. I don't mean little; I mean small, and I'm small because I was pressed small"(14). In the same way that Ruth was pressed small, Milkman was restrained and was not able to live with his true identity. This feeling is what later led Milkman to search for his own identity in other places and in other people.

Following the stage of parental impediment, Milkman was on his next stage of self-awareness. The individual who first inspired Milkman to discover his own true identity was Pilate. Pilate was one of the most unique, influential, and independent characters in the novel. Pilate sparked in Milkman, what no other person had before. She intrigued him. For the first time in his life, Milkman began to question things and felt curiosity and wonder. He began to feel in him, a desire to find out more, about himself and his family. With Pilate, came another influential woman in Milkman's life Hagar. Ever since he first met her, Milkman was enchanted and very attracted to Hagar. She opened his mind and heart to something that he had never felt before. It was Pilate and Hagar's lyrical nature that helped Morrison express Macon III next step towards self-awareness/actualization. Her singing was triggered by what she believed was a message from her father (Macon Dead I). It was his familial background that was indirectly luring him into searching for his own true identity. "Surrendering to the sound, Macon moved closer. He wanted no conversation, no witness, only to listen and perhaps to see the three of them, the source of that music that made him think of fields and wild turkey and calico"(). This sense of magical realism led Milkman to advance to the next stage in his gradual process. "As Macon felt himself softening under the weight of memory and music, the song died down. The air was quiet and yet Macon Dead could not leave"(0). Through the use of diction in this case, Morrison expressed Milkman's ongoing fascination for Pilate. As Pilate is part of his family, he is slowly uncovering pieces of what would later shape his identity. Once again, through the use of diction and realism, Morrison represented the gradual awakening that Milkman is experiencing.

Once Milkman had developed the initiative to search for his true self, he grew rapidly as a person. An influential agent in this case was Guitar, one of the few friends Milkman had. Guitar completed Milkman in a way that no other character could. Milkman was quiet, poetic, and not firm on his beliefs, while Guitar was enthusiastic, outgoing, and sentient of his needs. Guitar is the true foil of Milkman. It is through Guitar, that Milkman reaches another stage in his life. The most significant stage in the relationship between Milkman and Guitar was when Guitar spoke of the Seven Days. The Seven Days represented life for Guitar. He had found something he emphatically believed in. He told Milkman, "It's not about you living longer. It's about how you live and why. It's about whether your children can make other children"(160). Through diction, Morrison symbolized the effect that a goal, a purpose, and love can have on a person. When Milkman saw that Guitar was more interested in what he would die for, rather when how or when he died, it made him wonder. It even made him afraid that it was wrong. He told Guitar, "I'm scared for you man"(161), when in reality, it was himself that scared him the most. The necessity for purpose and love overcame Milkman's emotions leading him on to the most important stage in his life. Once again, Morrison portrayed Milkman's gradual awakening and awareness to his true purpose and identity through the use of diction. The diction, as minute and insignificant as it may have seemed, actually led to an array of mixed emotions and conflicts within Milkman, further deepening his cultural identity.

In his attempt to escape the suppressed world of his parents, Milkman stumbled upon their past. He visited Danville and Shalimar, both places of spiritual and familial heritage. For the first time in his life, he was in a place that he felt meant something. It was the land of his ancestors, primarily Macon Dead I. He learned from various characters, the events that shaped his parents past. It was these very experiences that had shaped his grandparents past. These various stories filled pieces to the puzzle that Milkman was trying to solve. His missing identity was forming itself as each story unfolded and as he met various different people. Milkman is especially drawn to Circe. This attraction is a part of the quest that Milkman has been trying to complete. Circe was like a part of their family, as she had helped Macon Dead II and Pilate escape from white landowners. So an attraction where there was vulnerability from Milkman on the subject of family was inevitable. Morrison wrote, "So when he saw the woman at the top of the stairs there was no way for him to resist climbing up toward her outstretched hands, her fingers spread wide for him, her mouth gaping open for him, her eyes devouring him"(). Circe, Pilate, and the men from his fathers past, provide Milkman with the necessary support, comfort and identity missing from his childhood. He begins to understand and appreciate his old, but newly found heritage. All that was absent from his upbringing is now substituted by events from generations past. Life, as Milkman had never experienced before, was easier to understand. This was primarily due to his new perspective, which proved to be more fulfilling. In this case, diction and realism played minor but nonetheless very important roles. The realism was presented through the diction when the dream of Circe is delineated. This intermingling of diction and realism produces the effect of awareness within Milkman. He begins to understand and complete his new, independent identity. Milkman discovered things about his parents relationships, and in the process discovered his own identity. By venturing into the unknown, he became aware of many of the characteristics that make up his own personal authenticity.

After a thorough examination of diction and realism within the context of the novel Song of Solomon by Toni Morrison, it is found that Milkman completes his quest of discovering himself. Milkman realized his true identity, and was finally freed from what had burdened and suppressed him as a child. Through gradual change, Milkman's various experiences shaped not only his personality, but also his identity. As Morrison wrote, "For now he knew what Shalimar knew If you surrendered to the air, you could ride it"(7).
