Act IV Scene i

1. How does Gertitude seek to shield Hamlet n this scene?

The Queen reveals to Claudius that Hamlet has killed Polonius, who was

hiding behind the arras in her room. She does not tell him that Hamlet

Help with essay on Hamlet Scene

suspects Claudius of killing the King; instead she states that she is

convinced that Hamlet is mad. Even though the Queen seems to be protecting Hamlet, her regard for Claudius seems undiminished in spite of her sons accusations

. What are Claudius' chief concerns with regard to the murder?

In typical fashion, Claudius is only concerned with saving his own skin. He now

knows for sure that Hamlet appears to be a real threat to him and is more eager

than ever to send the Prince off to England. He justifies his action by saying

that Hamlet is a potential threat to the lives of his subjects. Like a good king,

he will protect them from the madness of the Prince. The death of Polonius

has provided Claudius with the perfect opportunity of getting rid of his most

dangerous foe. Resultantly Claudius' two main concerns about this murder are the fact that he decides to hasten the preparation for Hamlet's banishment to England and two is to secure the agreement and participation of his counselors in his plans, in order to remove suspicion for himself.

Act IV Scene ii

1. If this scene were omitted, what difference would it make to the play?

Primarily, this scene reveals Hamlets increasing animosity toward

Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, his childhood friends whom he believes have

deserted him in favor of service to Claudius. Structurally, this scene

functions as a bridge between the plotting of the King against Hamlet and

Hamlets attempt to murder the King. Also if this scene were to be omitted, no one would know where Polonius' disappeared to.

Act IV Scene iii

1. a) What reason does Claudius give for not proceeding with the legal action against Hamlet?

Because Hamlet is a popular Prince, Claudius cannot punish him too severely in Denmark for murdering Polonius. Sending Hamlet to England seems the only remedy to Claudius desperate situation. Claudius knows Hamlet cannot be punished in a court of law, since the distracted multitude of people in the court love Hamlet and will avoid punishing him.

b) Give other reasons.

Another reason would be because, Hamlet is part of royalty and proceeding with legal action would cause another family feud and chaos in the kingdom. At this moment Claudius is trying to avoid getting caught for the murder. The public would look down upon that as well.

. a) What are the details of the King's plan?

Claudius orders Guildenstern to prepare Hamlet immediately for a speedy departure. G and R will escort Hamlet to the ship. England has recently fallen under Denmarks command and must pay tribute to King Claudius. In secret letters written to the English King, Claudius instructs England to murder Hamlet upon his arrival.

b) Why is he confident that it will be carried out?

Denmark is now in good relations with England, since the King has sent letter to the King of England he is confident that the plan shall be carried out.

Act IV Scene iv

1. Of what importance is the first appearance of Fortinbras?

In the first and second acts of the play, we heard of a young Fortinbras, impatient under his enforced inaction and anxious to redeem the land lost by his father to Denmark. He was prevented from carrying out his greater enterprise. Now we meet him at the head of his bend of soldiers, going to expose his own life and the lives of his men "to gain a little patch of ground that hath in it no profit but the name."

. What points of comparison and contrast are suggested between him and Hamlet.

In this scene, Shakespeare contrasts the actions of Fortinbras and Hamlet. The Prince, with shame, observes Fortinbras marching against Poland in an aggressive effort to honor his late father, a great military hero. Hamlet, in contrast, views himself as an inept son who, because of doubt and delay, has not avenged his fathers murder. The young Prince knows he has let his own father down by his lack of action. Motivated by the sight of the brave soldiers marching to Poland, he promises that all of his future thoughts will be bloody ones against Claudius. Yet, Fortinbras is more impulsive than Hamlet and he is also a man of his action. The meeting inspires Hamlet's thoughts in his fourth soliloquy, in which he again analyzes his own uncertain nature.

A correlational study was used in journal article, Personality Factors Associated with Generalized and Non-Generalized Social Anxiety. The aim of the study was to determine if the participants' scores on measures of generalized and non-generalized social anxiety are predicted by different personality factors. Ninety-five male and female university students with a mean age of 0.6 voluntarily participated in the study.

The participants were to complete two measures of social anxiety, the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS). The SPS and SIAS each consist of 0 scales to assess fears of the participants during social interaction and while being scrutinized during routine activities. Furthermore, they also had to complete two personality scales, the NEO-Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI) and the Anxiety Sensitivity Index (ASI). The NEO-FFI consists of 60 items for which the participants had to indicate the degree to which they agreed or disagreed with each item. The items were based on 5 personality dimensions Neuroticism, extraversion, openness to experience, agreeableness and conscientiousness. The ASI consisted of a 16 item self-report measure of fear of anxiety symptom based on the belief that these symptoms have harmful consequences. The results showed that twenty-two of the twenty-eight correlations showed significant relationships (p0.05). The five NEO-FFI measures of personality showed the lowest correlations while the SPS and SIAS showed the highest correlation (r = 0.78).

These results show that circumscribed social anxiety was mostly predicted by the ASI whereas generalized social anxiety was mostly predicted by neuroticism. These findings suggest that circumscribed social fears are associated with a fear of anxiety symptoms whereas generalized social anxiety is more related to personality dimensions reflecting neuroticism.

Order Custom Social Phobia paper

Nairne et al. briefly touch upon some of the information from the article to help the reader to better understand their point of view in the text. Nairne et al. do not use the findings from the article to convey their point of view. The only information presented in the text is the five NEO-FFI measures of personality extroversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, neuroticism, and openness. Nairne et al. use the NEO-FFI measure to describe the different aspects that make up the dimensions of personality. This seems to be the only information that Nairne et al. used from the article as the study itself was a preliminary study for future studies.

The limitations of the study were that the study was performed on limited participants and that the SIAS and SPS scales in this experiment are not diagnostic instruments. The participants in this experiment were university students who only represent a small population of society which means that the results cannot be generalized across all members of society. Furthermore, the scores of the participants who were university students were well below that of social phobics. This further reinforces the notion that one cannot generalize or use the findings presented in the article to understand personality. Secondly, the SIAS and SPS scales used in this experiment are not identical and not diagnostic instruments. The researchers of the experiment counter by saying that researchers believe that social phobia is on a continuum with social anxiety and that everyone experiences it from time to time.

stemz, tisk tisk tisk

Hmmp... long ass weekend. Long yet fun. I guess i needed to recover from the field trip and there wasnt much to do cept chill at the house or with carmen. Both, i guess, were pretty sick. I started crackin aims again and i picked up my new aim antwan since aol raped me in the ass, suspending just about everything i owned. So if you wanna find me ill be at the aim antwan. Ill prolly get some of my old aims back after they were reset cuz i got most of them protected. But im really pissed cuz im not gunna get tony back. Being that tony is my name i wanted it over anything. I got it for like weeks and it was keep getting reset and shit but i kept getting it back. But aol smartened up and slapped a nice big permawarn on my sn so i couldnt sign on aim with it i could only sign on AIMchange. So i wasnt able to keep the emails pending so i eventually lost it. Anyway who gives a fuck about aims they mean nothign right? Really im not a fag who sits home and calls in names and runs his cracker just to get some leets. I used to like have nice sns but now i really dont care. I just wanted a couple that have my name in it. I updated the index page a lil bit added a couple for features and gave some more of the pages a nice tune up. All im really concerned about now is the files, i really have no where to keep them and since i have cable internet its a bitch point five to run a server off one of my shitty comps. Well im in flex now with my person flex and im bored as a mother fucker i took a break from this post times to play BS (which i lost all three times). I guess life is getting a bit better since it cant quite get worse from where i was at. Ima go now since the period is almost over and i gotta go visit someone - pz and love

stemz, niggas and bitches

Good stuff going on around this peace so far. Ill start with the bad though, it seems that i cannot find people that are gunna post with me constantly like i wood like them too. I wish i can get it back to the stemz.net days where it was me and klear bitchin everyday at this. Now im lucky to post times a week at best. Im asking around for all my friends (on/off line) to help me out but so far i havnt got many people that wanna help out. Its really not that hard all im askin is for is a simple post like - times a week. but anyway here is the good news, i put up alota jokes and the hosting section is now back so quick and jump on that while its hot. Im still working on content and the downloads section on almost but not quite done. someone please send me some jokes cuz i need some funny ones and ill give yoh full credit if u get me a hot one. I might be putting a up a contest like i did on my first site cuz that brough me alota hits so ill look into that only this time i dunno wut i want the contest to be. Lots of work to be done and ill slowly get there and eventually this site is gunna be the hottest e/n site out there cuz of its originality and the other shit thatll be goin on around here. Hmm well last night i chill with my latin princess carmen and my lord that was a fucking good time. Maybe it wood be a bit explict to mention the particulars but maybe one day ill share a bit more. im so not into my school anymore (not that i really ever was). Everyone is so gay in my school , sooooo immature. Thats why latly ive been finding that im having some great times chillin with carmens crew. Maybe ill find more chill peeps next year but till then im fine with where im at. i think im gunna take a cab to carmens cuz i got some leftover money from my shitty trip to cape cod so im outa here. pz and love

I just got back today from the worst fucking field trip in the whole history of fucked up trips. I picked up a nice fat suspension during the trip so monday ill prolly be stickin around. I cant believe summer is here so soon and this summer is gunna be sick. Im plannin to be goin alota places. damn i cant wait to chill with carmen this weekend smerks that i know will take my mind off my shitty week for at least a little while. im trying to think of shit to put on here and me and me and a couple people are gunna make a pranks sections since we do it alot anyway. along with the apps section im gunna be including cuz i found a host that will take my shit so i think this site is gunna be kicking it at the most is like a month or so i can prolly get it up in one night if i really cared that much. but i got much better things to do. im fuckin tired niggas so ill catch yall in the AM. pz and love

Summer Book Report

The Outsiders

1. The book that I did my report on is called The Outsiders by S.E. Hinton. Its was published by the Penguin Group last in 17.

. The main characters in this book were Darry, Johnny, Sodapop, Ponyboy, Two-Bit Matthews, Dallas, Steve, and the Socs. Darry, Johnny, Sodapop, Ponyboy, Two-Bit Matthews, Dallas, and Steve were all in a gang that lived on the eastside of their town called the Greasers. The Socs were the rich kids that lived on the West Side of town. Darry, Sodapop, and Ponyboy were brothers whose mother and father died in a car crash leaving them living together under Darry's supervision. Darry is six foot two and muscular. He does not understand anything unless it is a plain hard fact, but he uses his head. Sodapop always understands everybody and always listens to everybody. Johnny was sixteen years old and had hard black eyes and black hair. Two-Bit is the oldest of the gang and the wisecracker of the bunch. You could not shut him up, he has to get his two bits worth in. Dallas was the wildest of the gang he first got arrested when he was ten. Steve was Sodapops best buddy from grade school. His specialty is fixing cars. Steve and Sodapop both work at a gas station. The Socs are an abbreviation for the socials, which are the rich west-side kids that jump the Greasers.

Custom Essays on Outsiders

. This book was a fictional book.

4. This book was about the rivalry between the Socs and the Greasers. The Socs and the Greasers jumped each other, fought with each other, and had rumbles with each other. One night when Johnny and Ponyboy were walking home from a movie a group of Socs tried to jump them. A Soc grabbed Ponyboys arm and shoved his face in a fountain trying to drown him. The next thing he knew was that he was laying face up in the pavement. "I killed him," said Johnny "I killed that boy." Johnny had killed a Soc named Bob. They were both scared of being caught by the police. They needed help and a plan so the went to Dallas. Dallas told them to hop a train to Windrixville, and to hide in the church on top of Jay Mountain until he got there and to stay out of sight. They stayed there for five days just smoking, reading, and eating bologna sandwiches. When Dallas got there he took them to eat and told them that the police were looking in Texas for them. When Dallas was driving them back to town they saw the church they stayed at on fire and found out that there were kids inside the burning church. Ponyboy and Johnny ran in to get the kids out. They got all of them out, but while Johnny was trying to escape a piece of timber hit his back and he was taken to the hospital. He died in the hospital and Dally is angered by this, and runs off. Later he calls Ponys house to tell him that he robbed a store and is being chased by the cops. They go to meet him, and see him shot down after he pulls a gun on the police.

5. I enjoyed reading The Outsiders because it showed how poor unwanted children survive. It was filled with drama, action, hope, and a little comedy. Although the book is fictional, I believe that people actually have to go through what Greasers do and this book shows how they live. The only problem with this book is that is was not very descriptive.

6. If I were to change the ending of the book I would make it so that Johnny survived. If Johnny had survived then Dallas would not have robbed a store and he would have lived and then Ponyboy and the rest of the Greasers would not be so sad.

In-Class Writing Essay

The speech given by President Bush in 001 makes reference to the "murderous ideologies" of the 0th century and how the use of those ideologies have led to the sacrifice of human life and how those individuals abandoned every value they had except for those that gave them the desire for "will to power". I find the quotation interesting because the points he brings up in the speech can find parallels to the inter-war period between World War I and World War II.

Sacrificing human lives to further an ideology or in a quest for power is something that is viewed as being evil, but those types of sacrifices were in a way commonplace during the inter-war period. Stalin, in his drive in industrialize the Soviet Union before the beginning of the war, used force to move many peasants from their land onto collectives in which they grew food and manufactured goods to support those in the city and to move the Soviet Union forward into the 0th century and to assist Stalin in his move to gain as much territory as possible for the Soviet Union and to further the quest of the communists for a world-wide revolution. Osama Bin-Laden, even though he is not the leader of any country uses the tactics that are similar in that he is willing to sacrifice as many lives as are needed to further his ideology of the Middle East being a collection of Muslim states that are without the influence of the United States and its allies and for the destruction of Israel.

Hitler's quest for "will to power" took the form of blaming Jews for the state of Germany after World War I. Hitler used the Jews as a scapegoat for the crippling reparations that Germany had to pay as mandated in the Treaty of Versailles. One parallel to this would be the sanctions imposed upon Saddam Hussein after the Persian Gulf War in the early 0's. The United Nations, with the full support of western nations imposed sanctions on Iraq that effectively crippled the country and Hussein made the U.S. and its allies his scapegoats by blaming the state of his nation on the western nations and not taking responsibility for it himself. And just like Stalin purged the officer ranks in the Soviet military to gain the loyalty the non-commissioned officers, Hussein did almost the same thing when he came to power in Iraq in17, when he executed senior party activists and army officers. While Hitler was not directly responsible for the damage that was done to Germany thru the Treaty of Versailles, he did use the Jews as his scapegoat and gave more credence to his desire to exterminate the Jews not only from Germany, but from the planet itself.

It didn't occur to me until today that those with radical visions are following in the path of Nazism, fascism, and totalitarianism. At first I thought that President Bush wasn't on point with making those types assumptions, but the more I think about it, the more I can see some similarities in it. The Muslim fundamentalist's desire for a state/states that are free from western influences, have a strong nationalistic bent, and a strong reliance on the state for control of everything. The economies would have capitalistic feel to it, but everything would still be controlled by the state. In many ways their desires mirror those of Hitler, Mussolini, and Franco and to a certain extent it also mirrors what Stalin desired as well. The unwillingness of the U.S. to get involved in what was going on in Europe led to a rise in Nazi and Fascist states during the inter-war period. Our failure assist to the Kurds in Iraq after the Persian Gulf War and the Afghani people after their war for freedom from Soviet rule, led to the establishment of the Taliban government in Afghanistan and to even more repression by Hussein against the Kurds in the northern regions of Iraq.

The ideology that was not mentioned by President Bush and his speechwriters was communism. I would think that communism was not mentioned because it isn't seen as a threat in today's world. The drive for world-wide revolution has been left behind the drive to build market economies and the creation of democratic states/countries. With the fall of the U.S.S.R., slow introduction of a capitalist economy in China, economic issues in North Korea and Cuba have sealed the fate of communism being seen as a threat to the U.S. and the rest of the world.

"Drama and Theatre in their content and style reflect the society from which they spring"

To what extent is this true for Australian plays and productions?

Segregation of minority groups in society is a common occurrence in Australia. Segerga

tion can lead to isolation, loss of hope, detachment, a struggle for survival and the re

liance on family for support. Segregation is a major theme in both Gary's House and

The 7 Stages of Grieving. Through the use of Dramatic Forms and Conventions such

as set, characterisation, tension, and the language used, we grasp an understanding

of the underlying meaning of the play and its social context.

Gary's House focuses directly on the survival of one's environment, whether it

be physical, emotional or one's upbringing. Gary's House is about people who dont fit

in but are desperately trying to do so. Australia is a country where the standard of living

is relatively high and employment and home ownership expected. Yet sometimes those

that are estranged from society and have to struggle even harder in order to survive in

these harsh environments, are often forgotten and their efforts to make a place for

themselves, discounted.

The 7 Stages of Grieving is a contemporary Indigenous performance. Whilst

appropriating western form and using traditional storytelling, The 7 Stages of

Grieving gives an emotional insight to Murri life. Its a one-women show that follows the

journey of an Aboriginal "Everywoman" as she tells serious and humorous stories of

grief and reconciliation. In an environment where Indigenous Australians battle racism,

death in custody, a history of violence and anguish over lost land, The 7 Stages of Grieving is a reminder of Indigenous Australian's struggle to survive, and our sense of

humor and irony.

Set Design is an important Dramatic Form and Convention, as the building of Gary

and Sue-Anne's house is a solid metaphor for the chaotic journey that people make as

they try to build there lives. It also represents the getting over of Gary and Christine's

emotional, physical and previous experiences that have been holding them back.

The houses physical appearance also represents how the characters are coming along

in their journey for survival. When Christine experiences a loss of hope she attacks the

house. As shown in Act Two, Scene Ten, Christine attacks the house out of anger and

desperation, she no longer sees her life has any direction and is starting to tear down

the one thing that represented survival and direction in her life. This stage direction only

reiterates that the house is a solid metaphor for survival.

The 7 Stages of Grieving also uses the Dramatic Form and Convention of set de

sign to give us an insight into the struggles faced by Indigenous Australians. In,

1. Prologue, the scene is set

"A large block of ice is suspended by 7 strong ropes. It is

melting onto a freshly turned grave of red earth. The performance area is covered in a

thin layer of black powder framed by a scrape of white."

The layers of black and white earth represents the two races'. There is a great deal

of significance of the use of dirt in this design as it symbolises the two races trying to get by sharing the same land. The white earth surrounds the black earth much the

same way as white society has boxed itself around Aboriginal history and tradition.

Compacting their traditions and values, allowing no room for freedom of movement.

The 7 strong ropes represent the 7 stages of grieving. Suspended by the ropes is a

large melting block of ice. The ice is dripping onto the red earth, this give a visual image

of crying, its as if the melting ice is crying out of grief for Indigenous Australians over

the land that is being ripped away from them by white society. The use of this design

has powerful emotional depth to it. The audience feels drawn to the performance on an

emotional level. The design layout has immediately personalised the performance and

sent a powerful message as to what the content of the play will address.

The characterisation of the characters in Gary's House is also a very important

Dramatic Form and Convention as the audience is able to grasp an understanding of

the socio-economic stasis of the characters, allowing a greater depth of understanding

of the play and it's social context. This Dramatic Form and Convention, is vital to the

performance as it reflects the on the audience's understanding of the society in which

the characters are surrounded. Gary and Sue-Anne are portrayed as "Great Aussie Bat

tlers". This image sets them apart from society as they struggle to survive. The charac

ters in Gary's House are all very stereotypical. Gary is an angary, lonely and handwork

ing male. He is trying to make a go of whatever card his life has dealt him. He is a prod

uct of his childhood and lack of integration into society. The performance allows the

audience a look at to why Gary is the way he is. In, Act One, Scene four, Gary states how growing up in foster homes without a "proper family" and the chance to experience

love has made him they way he is. There is also a greater depth to Gary as the audi

ence sees his understanding of his lack of sociolisation within society, when he says,

"I watch other people- with their friends and their kids and that- and I copy

how they talk to each other. I'm trying to learn.....

But....Someone says something to me and I get it wrong and-y'know..."

Although this is just a basic understanding of Gary's personality, the point is that he has

an understanding. No matter how insignificant it may seem, Gary understands in some

way that it is because of his childhood and lack of integration into society that he has

become who he is. He also realises that its too late to change, that he cant learn these

traits just by looking at people its something that is taught as a child. Although Gary

never had a chance to experience love from family as a child, he often expresses his

love for Sue-Anne, which begs the question, do we learn to love or are we born with an

innate ability for it? This home is Gary's last chance- in and out of foster homes all his

life he finally has a go at a real family and future.

Dave is portrayed as a distant character, who is afraid of commitment, as seen in Act

One, Scene Nine, when Christine begs Dave to "please stay". Dave turns his back

and walks away. Dave is drawn to family hence he doesnt leave when he is able to.

Through Dave staying we see a transformation of his character when he is the one

begging Christine to "please stay".

Sue-Anne displays many childlike qualities. She is self-absorbed and is always reliant

on someone to take care of her. This is stereotypical of her socio-economic standing.

Gratitude, affection, respect, sympathy and empathy are all feelings Sue-Anne has no grasp of due to her own cultural and social displacement.

Christine is a hard product of society. She has a cold demeanor and comes across as a

force to be reckoned with. She is stereotyped as a woman of power, placing emotions

behind in order to succeed in her career. The character of Christine is a representative

of feminism. Christine has also had a hard life but has taken a more educated and

isolating path than Gary. She expresses her feelings best when she says,

"I dont expect anything from anyone and I'm not disappointed."

Throughout the performance we see her transform into the very thing she was trying to

surpress, but ultimately she has realised that what she was trying to surpress is the one

thing that makes her happy.

The 7 stages of Grieving uses the Dramatic Form and Convention of characterisa

tion to appeal emotionally to the audience concerning Aboriginal issues. The perfor

mance has family orientated characters and is performed in a family portrait style. The

actor expresses her own personal grief as well as Indigenous Australians as a whole.

Characters are only ever mentioned in the performance and are all portrayed by the

same person. This makes it seem as if the actor is a representative for the Aboriginal

community and is trying to reach for some sort of empathy from the audience.By telling

deeply emotional stories to the audience the actor is giving a deeply intimate portrayal

of life as an Indigenous Australian.

With the use of Naturalised based experiences the performance gives the audience a

lot to think about. In 1. Mugshot, the actor only presents the facts, allowing the audience to make up there own mind.

The Dramatic Form and Convention, tension is used in Gary's House and plays a

significant role. The tension in Gary's House is created by information we know about

the characters. Information such as the characters moral and value codes, for example,

just the mere fact that Sue-Anne and Gary are unmarried and pregnant, and that Gary

is old enough to be Sue-Anne's father as well as the language that they use, makes the

audience aware of a moral point of view. The tension of the play provokes the perfor

mance as well as the audience to question society. It is also through the socio-

economic stasis of the characters that we see a context for the play form.

The Dramatic Form and Convention, tension created in The 7 Stages of Grieving

is one of upset of Indigenous Australians towards Anglo-Saxons and Police. The perfor

mance is primarily about raising awareness, creating remorse, guilt, understanding and

"sorriness". This tension is created by putting the essence of the performance into the

hands of the audience. Its the audience's interpretation of the performance that gives it

meaning and tension. It is through the intensity of emotions that the actor creates, that

delivers tension to the performance.

The Dramatic Form and Convention of language used throughout Gary's House is

highly significant to depicting the characters struggle to survive in Australian society,

and the experiences had by them.

The performance is dominated by colloquial, Australian slang speech.

Sue-Anne describes Gary and herself as "derros" in Scene One, Act One. The use of

the word "derro" reflects on Sue-Annes social, economic and educational stance. This

language suggest Sue-Anne has had little education and limited or no socialisation

skills. Each Character in Gary's house has a style of emotive language that is individual

to that character. Christine for example has a sophisticated speech that contains a lot

of anger,

" Is it too much to ask one of my solicitors to ring me back?

[pause] Don't get a tone with me missy."

Where as Gary's language is uneducated. He finds it hard to understand things. Gary

too has a lot of pent up anger that he sometimes releases,

"When I was ten years old I marched into the Tae Kwon Do

school and I said 'Teach me how to kill a person."

Both actions and words are equally important in Gary's House. By the way the charac

ters act we grasp an understanding of the message being told. Sue-Anne takes up

smoking after she has the baby, and repeatedly is told off by Vince and Christine, yet

Sue-Anne still isnt able to grasp the concept that what she is doing is damaging for the

baby. This tells the audience about Sue-Anne's self-absorbed and childlike personality.

The 7 Stages of Grieving uses Traditional tribal language and Aboriginal pronounci

ation (broken english). The purpose of using tribal speech is mainly to educate and give

insight to the audience about Indigenous Australian traditions. The use of broken en

glish words such as "Gubberment" is included as it reflects the social, economic and

educational background of who is being portrayed. Words carry the weight of the perfor

mance as it is primarily of a storytelling genre, where colloquial and generalised language is symbolic of Aboriginal people. This language encourages an air of intimacy

between the actor and audience.

.

The actor pauses after speaking a lot in order for the audience to reflect on what was

just said. The actor has direct dialogue with the audience and talks about things she

has experienced which again creates an air of intimacy between the two. This is shown

in, 11. Murri Gets a Dress,

"have you ever been black? You now when you wake up one

morning and your black?"

The language used throughout The 7 stages of Grieving gives the audience and emo

tional insight into the Aboriginal culture as well as reaching out for some understanding

from us.

From the use of the Dramatic Forms and Conventions discussed, we can see clearly

that Gary's House and The 7 Stages of Grieving do in fact reflect the society from

which they spring. The use of Dramatic Forms and Conventions adds a deeper under

standing of the social, economical, educational and emotional context of the perfor

mances and the characters. It is with these Dramatic Forms and Conventions that

meaning is added to the performances

The Canterbury Tales offer many characters whose vocation does not match his or her tale. This often provides humor and provokes much thought. Yet Chaucer makes the parson match his tale. This provokes a more serious train of thought. Thus Chaucer shows forth his brilliance in his versatility of subject matter.

The first thing one should notice in the Parsons tale is that the Parson refuses to tell a fable. In lines 0-6, the Parson gives his reasoning for a straightforward prose. He will not tell a story mixed with chaff and wheat. Rather, he chooses to tell a tale in nonfiction prose so all can understand with clarity. His object is not so much to tell an impressive story but to show forth what he deems important.

Second, he speaks in a respectable medieval manner by calling upon authorities. Whereas the wife of Bath says she will not reference authorities, he does so unashamedly. He references the Biblical figures Matthew, Jeremiah, Solomon, David, Jesus, Job, Hezekiah, Ezekiel, Peter, Jeremiah, Moses, Isaiah, Micah, John, Joseph, Paul, Zechariah, and Luke. In addition he refers to scholars and saints such as Ambrose, Isidore, Gregory, Augustine, Chrysostom, Bernard, Seneca, Basil, Damasus, and Galen. As Augustine has been the most influential person in Church history, Augustine is the most quoted authority he uses.

Moreover, he includes a lengthy discussion on mortal and venial sins. He exemplifies many ways one may fall into one of the seven deadly sins. Such offenses include birth control as murder and nocturnal emission as adultery. He also gives guidelines how to prevent those sins. He offers hope to the penitent by setting forth the prescribed method of reconciliation ordained by Holy Church. He takes his duty as a Christian seriously. He wishes none to suffer or perish but to serve God and Holy Church.

Thus, the Chaucer creates a character altogether appealing to the medieval mind. He exemplifies the medieval ideals better than the other characters in The Canterbury Tales. By making the perfect character, Chuacer amplifies the humor of the other characters shortcomings. This shows forth Chaucers versatility in writing.
