Underlying Philosophy

Kasimir Malevich was born in 1878 in Kiev.

In the late 1800's he studied at the Kiev School of Art. In 100 he left and started working on his art. These early works were described as 'Impressionist'. From his early days, Malevich was not concerned with nature or analysing his visual impressions, "But with man and his relation to the cosmos".

From 105-08 Malevich painted a number of works that were appealing. They were executed with a highly rhythmic brushstroke, different to many artists of this time. In terms of construction they were based on and influenced by the work of Czanne, Van Gogh, Gauguin and Derain whom he had studied.

Custom writing service can write essays on Malevich

'The Flower Girl' of 104-05 is typically Impressionist, with a strong horizontal division cutting the background scene, with a "rhythmic brushstroke" being used. (Not near Abstraction).

Malevichs first independent works date from 108, these were large gouache (water coloured) paintings of peasant rural themes-related to the Agricultural series, which he had viewed.

It is evident throughout his gouache works there is a shortening of perspective. "Peasants in Church" of 10-10 is of a mass of static, interwoven people, where three-dimensional space has been all but crowded out. The people have lost any separate identity of "form, face or gesture".

"The Woodcutter" of 111 is Malevich's first known Cubo-Futurist work. The figure has merged with the background of cylindrical logs. The D perspective has been replaced by colour contrast, to indicate the solidity of form. (Moving towards abstraction)

"Malevich has no elegance, his full intense colour is applied in a dense, even rhythm".

Towards the end of 11, he was influenced by the Synthetic Cubist works by Picasso and Braque. This lead to a change in colour and the abandonment of Cubo-Futurism. Malevich put odd figures and shapes in his work, attempting a collage, taking his work to "surrealist proportions". An "Englishman in Moscow"(see right) is evident of this. (Abstract tendencies in work)

Malevich has experimented with many types of art, but is most well known for his Suprematist work, which he is said to have started in 11. This movement lead him towards abstraction, where his work became strange and obscure, where the artist himself could only understand the work. Much of this work is reported to have been displayed upside down as it has no features to notify which way it was designed.

During his time as an artist religion was a large influence in his style of work.

Andy Chang

English 1-H

B. The Shattering of the Conch

To see what the shattering of the conch symbolizes, one must what the conch symbolized from the beginning of the novel. The conch shell symbolizes the law and order of the old adult world which Piggy tries so desperately to protect. The conch symbolizes the boys old proper English-selves, when they obeyed authority. When the rock destroys the conch, anarchy quickly ensues because any hope of strong, central leadership has been abandoned. The island society collapses into chaos.

The quotes here are from the beginning of the novel to the end, showing the progress of the deteriorating conch.

1. "Ralph smiled and held up the conch for silence"(). At the beginning of the novel, the boys acted like their proper English-selves. Everything was in order, and many of the boys were calm here.

. "I'll give the conch to the next person to speak. He can hold it when he's speaking"(). The conch is still making things organized for the boys. The conch here symbolizes the organization, which is a basic principle for the boys growing up as proper.

. Jack says "The conch doesn't count on top of the mountain,…so you shut up"(4). As the novel progresses, the conch starts to slowly deteriorate. The boys start to get annoyed of each other, and they bend the rules of the conch, making it less powerful.

4. "Hands were reaching for the conch in the light of the setting sun"(81). Many "hands" reaching for the conch shows that organization of the group is falling apart. Also this occurred at the setting sun which means, darkness is starting to over power the conch.

5. After Ralph says he has the conch, Piggy says and realizes that "there ain't no need,…What's the others going to think?"(156) The conch has deteriorated in its power to organize. Now, one can see that as the conch started to weaken in power, many of the boys started to become savages.

6. "The rock struck Piggy at a glancing blow from chin to knee; the conch exploded into a thousand fragments and ceased to exist"(181). The shattering of the conch symbolizes the final act that makes the savages completely lose their old proper English-selves. Since now the main organizer is broken, the island society collapses into chaos.

Johannes Kepler (1571-160)

Johannes Kepler was born in Weil der Stadt in Swabia, in southwest Germany, not far from France. Kepler was born on December 7, 1571, a premature child.

He was a mathematician and an astronomer. Kepler is most famous for his discovery of the three laws of planetary motion. Also, to a lesser extent, he is known for his work on convex lenses. Furthermore, he also gave the modern explanation of the workings of the eye. He brought about the acceptance of the heliocentric concept.

He truly believed in the Copernican system, so he saw the planetary orbits as six concentric circles. He felt the universe would somehow show mathematical beauty or symmetry. He put forward a theory that the orbits might be arranged so that regular polygons would just fit between adjacent ones, and maybe somehow this reflected some invisible underlying structure holding it all together. He then realised that this was wrong because the universe was three-dimensional. He realised that instead of thinking about circles, he should be thinking about spheres, with the planetary orbits being along the equators.

He argued that the five regular solids determined the distances of the planets from the Sun in the Copernican system, if one supposed that a planets orbit was circumscribed about one solid and inscribed in another.

Through these findings and arguments, Kepler can be seen in many respects to mark the beginnings of what is now called modern science. Kepler developed his experimental laws from Brahes data on Mars. Kepler said, By the study of the orbit of Mars, we must either arrive at the secrets of astronomy or forever remain in ignorance of them.

Kepler then widespread, saying that his laws applied to all the planets, including the earth, without ever actually proving that this was true. This law even applies to comets, though he did not know it at the time. Though Kepler may not have thought of such things so far ahead, the generality of his laws predicts and explains the movement of satellites orbiting the earth.

To Kepler, the solar system was the core, most important part of creation. Keplers approach is quite appealing in the context of modern physics.

Kepler died in Regensburg in the year 160.

Emotional Speech Analysis William Shakespeare's "Julius Caesar" is a well-written stage play. Shakespeare included many good speeches in his plays; one of the best was the one delivered by Antony. Antony's speech came very shortly after Julius Caesar's death, and the city was in much chaos. The crowd had just heard Brutus's speech. Brutus was one of the murderers of Caesar. His speech appealed to ones emotions and used many rhetorical devices. Antony uses repetition to appeal to a common folk's emotions. He repeats the words "Brutus is an honorable man". The statement, however, was really being said with a sarcastic tone. Brutus is really not an honorable man. This restatement is emphasizing the importance of the sarcasm. The word honorable becomes a bad word by the end of his speech. This played directly on the emotion of patriotism and not to appear stupid. Another use of repetition and rhythm would be him describing Caesar as ambitious. He also turns the mean of ambitious around. In this case, however, he turns it from bad to good. His repetitive use of the statement kept a rhythm to his speech. This appealed to the emotion of appearing not foolish. This is a good emotion to appeal to, because one wants to always feel smart and educated and have an opinion on something. Antony also used rhetorical questions. The most prominent question was whether the people thought Caesar was truly ambitious. He was not expecting a reply when he would ask whether Caesar was ambitious. The emotion of appearing not to be foolish would probably best go along with this statement and rhetorical device. The people would probably just nod and agree, without thinking twice. Antony's speech was filled with rhetorical devices affecting the emotions of one. His speech was directed to the common people of the city. His speech swayed the entire crowd from siding with Brutus to side with him. While Brutus's speech used logic, Antony was able to convey his message better by appealing to the emotions.
