"...a crew of young workers appeared on their way back to the village. He gazed at them with a peculiar feeling of interest and desire that he could not understand" (p. 45). The Baron experiences homosexual feelings. He is perplexed on his condition and wishes it away.
The Baron is now questioning who he is, his character and his appearance. He realizes his actions are not normal, and cannot be his; his perception of what is going on is that he has a woman's spirit within him. The reasoning used is his sudden apprehension toward hunting and his fascination with his target, the birds. These qualities have never been a part of his life, which mainly consisted of women and hunting.
A dualism between the characters becomes apparent when the discussion of love is proposed. Both characters realize they are together. "I come to sleep with you, Baron, sir." (p.4) Clara openly expresses herself to the Baron. This in turn advances to a feeling of completeness between the two characters.
