I believe the novel, The Handmaid's Tale, was a genius's masterpiece. The whole book is Offred's diary that is found later and analyzed as one of the only pieces of evidence on the history of Gilead. By the end of the book, I started thinking about Gilead as a piece of history, and at the same time, the possible future. How do I know that I'm not going to end up just like Offred, trapped in a world that seems to just have shoved it's way into my life? I cannot believe that this fate is in my future, because we are conditioned to believe that we can help circumstances. Humans tend to always believe we are going forward in life. We like to believe we are not like our parents, grandparents, or ancient ancestors. We like to believe that we do not have the same social environment as them. We like to believe that we are constantly progressing, and constantly eliminating obstacles, extending to a sort of utopia. However, Atwood makes us think, Where are we going? When we get there, where do we go next? If there really is a utopia in our future, how do we know when we have reached it? And if we do reach a utopia and know it, does the world end then, because it can no longer progress? Gilead is supposed to be the near future although outsiders may see the past lack of freedom, captivity, sexism, discrimination, deprivation of education, war everything our history books tell us not to do. Even in the "Historical notes" when Professor Pieixoto calls Offred's Underground Femaleroad an "Underground Frailroad" (74) we see the same not so subtle sexism we saw two centuries ago.

It seems to me that most of Gilead revolves around the idea of a womb. A woman's womb is considered a flower. Offred constantly mentions flowers the lilies, the red, bleeding tulips that open up. Offred once finds Serena Joy hacking away at her flowers. I think she felt like her womb has disappointed her, and just as her flowers, her womb is useless. Offred gets two eggs in her breakfast every morning. Every morning, Offred examines her eggs; she admires them, treasures them, and almost worships them. Offred notes, "I think that this is what God must look like an egg…. If I have an egg, what more can I want?"(17). They are conditioned to believe their only value is in their womb.

The world of Gilead is almost entirely justified by biblical precedents. In the beginning, when God created man in his image, he then 'took a rib' from man (Adam) to create a 'companion' for him. Woman (Eve) is meant to be a follower of man. Of course, Eve is the one who defies God, and 'makes' Adam do so as well. I think the Bible is saying that women are trouble, and should not be given privileges. Atwood seems to play on this observation as well. In the 'Historical Notes,' Pieixoto repeats a quote; "Our big mistake was teaching them to read. We won't do that again."(8). Judd took the women's reading and writing privileges away, therefore eliminating the threat of defiance or rebellion. This is entirely justified by the Bible.

The Handmaids are stripped of their names and given names such as Ofglen, Ofwarren, and Ofcharles. The name, Offred, suggests she belongs to Fred, the commander. To rob someone of their name is to rob them of their identity. They have no identity. This is vividly apparent when Offred is meeting with Ofglen and realizes it is a different girl that approaches her. Offred asks, 'Has Ofglen been transferred, so soon?' The woman says, "'I am Ofglen.' Word perfect. And of course she is, the new one, and Ofglen, wherever she is, is no longer Ofglen. I never did know her real name." (5). Their name serves it's purpose, to state who their Commander is, and that is all anyone ever needs to know or wants to know about them.

Custom Essays on The Handmaid's Tale: By Margaret Atwood

'The Ceremony', I believe, is incredibly destructive to the whole community, all for the sake of procreation. Serena Joy cries every time she takes part in The Ceremony. She must lie in a room and watch her husband have sexual intercourse with another woman who is lying on her stomach. This gesture, to watch, is disgusting on its own, but the fact that it is her husband makes it worse. Not to mention the fact that she is not allowed to have sex with him herself. She cannot bear children on her own. This takes away from her womanhood and, I am sure, makes her jealous of Offred. The Commander feels as though he is sinning knowing what he is doing to his wife. Offred is being degraded, violated, abused, mutilated, used… and "the Commander is fucking." (116). She must detach herself. There are no words to describe the horror of this act.

After the Commander has invited Offred into his office a couple of times, they must go to another Ceremony. Here the Commander has sex with her because it has become more personal. Later, Nick becomes a way for her husband, Luke, to live on, and she makes love to him.

Reading this novel now shocks me more, because the war is going on. I feel like Gilead is possible and is more likely now that we have so many nuclear weapons. I fear the day when Gilead takes over our society, and wish this day never to come.

Introduction

Help with essay on Feminism within Roald Dahls Childrens Book, The Witches

Like all of Roald Dahls books, The Witches is a highly entertaining and humorously sarcastic look at many of the fears and realities that children face. As the title indicates, this particular Dahl story is about witches. From this simple understanding we know that the tale is about women, for only women are witches, males are warlocks. With that perspective in mind the following paper examines how one could look at Dahls story from a feminist perspective.

The Witches

It should be noted, first and foremost, that while can argue many different perspectives in an examination of this story, the perspective being offered is one that indicates Dahls book is a very negative look at feminism and at women in general, providing a somewhat derogatory understanding of who women are.

In understanding how Dahls work seems negatively directed at women we first look at the fact that women have, perhaps throughout history, been negatively classed as a witch if they voice their opinions or make a stand of some kind. Good women were called ladies and were never considered witches. And, in all honesty, there is only one good woman in Dahls book. That woman is not just any woman but a grandmother. In this respect we can argue that the grandmother symbolizes the ideal female who is neither pretty nor truly opinionated. She is nurturing for she takes care of her grandson and loves him. That is her life and she is not sexual, pretty, or threatening in any way. She is the ideal female, in the opinion of the stereotypical and ignorant male.

We are then left with all the other women in the book, all of whom are angry vicious witches. In the following we gain an introduction into who these women are, and they are far from nurturing and positive

In fairy tales witches always wear silly black hats and black cloaks and they ride on broomsticks. But this is not a fairy tale. This is about REAL WITCHES. REAL WITCHES dress in ordinary clothes and look very much like ordinary women. They live in ordinary houses and they work in ordinary jobs. That is why they are so hard to catch (Dahl ).

This simple introduction leads us to know that we would never be able to recognize a witch, for she does everything just like everyone else. She works and dresses like any other woman. We do not ever see these other women, but we assume they are mothers and good women like grandmothers. This is further emphasized in the following, which provides us an incredibly negative look at women A real witch hates children with a red-hot sizzling hatred that is more sizzling and red-hot than any hatred which you could possibly imagine.......Even if she is working as a cashier in a supermarket or typing letters for a businessman or driving around in a fancy car (and she could be doing any of these things), her mind will always be plotting and scheming and churning and burning and whizzing and phizzing with murderous bloodthirsty thoughts (Dahl 7).

Considering that the women we see are all witches, save the grandmother, we are led to assume that all these women we see who do not have children hate children and all they stand for. They are vicious and cruel creatures that look like everyone else and who act like everyone else. But, when we get them behind closed doors their evil comes forth as they ultimately try to destroy children.

Symbolically we can argue that what we are seeing is a picture of feminists who argue that women should not be obligated to have children. Feminists have often been seen in a negative light because society assumes they should have children. These witches are those evil women who do not want children. A woman who does not want children is presumed to be very unnatural and in this novel, so unnatural that she is an evil witch that wishes to destroy children.

This also symbolizes how much of a threat such women can be. They look like everyone else, but we better watch out because these independent women are actually incredibly evil. They are successful and appear to be perfectly fine, but they do not have children. This is a sign to a man that a woman is either a lesbian or a feminist in many ways. In Dahls novel we see this very powerful possibility for there is something wrong with these women who have no children.

Dahls novel just takes it one step further and indicates that any such woman is clearly an affront to nature itself. They are evil and they are dangerous creatures. They plot to rid the world of children, and thus symbolically are trying to change the course of a society in which women love children and nurture children.

In further understanding this particular perspective we note that the grandmother is more than a simple nurturing woman, she is also a witch hunter, indicating that any good woman would want to rid the world of women who did not want children The Witches, the main character is seven years old. His Norwegian grandmother, a retired witchophile, becomes his guardian upon the death of his parents...He....enlists the help of his indomitable grandmother to stop the witches evil plot to kill all of the children in England (Royer). In this we can clearly see how the grandmother is guilty of indicating women without children are evil.

We also note that the winners of the battle are a boy and a grandmother who hates witches, or women without children. This presents us with the power of men, for the boy is essentially the mastermind and power in the story. And, the grandmother is certainly on his side wishing to propagate the notion that women should always love children.

It becomes obvious that the story of The Witches offers many negative looks at women who are less than ordinary. And, interestingly enough, Dahl has often been criticized for such approaches Dahl has been accused of sexism by feminists in England, and has been criticized for his negative portrayal of witches by witches societies in the United States. These critics point to statements such as the following in making their case against Dahl But the fact remains that all witches are women (Royer). Many argue that the witch, such as Dahls witches are seen as a celebration of and a reaction against the power of the female imagination, female sexuality, and feminist politics (Bewitched by Witches). One individual, in response to Dahls derogatory attitude towards witches, and thus women as well, states While The Witches presents the same old stereotypes about our kindred, i.e. dwelling on the idea that Witches are evil persons determined to kill children, Dahl has eliminated the !

notion that Witches are ugly, old hags. The resulting message is preposterous (New Moon Rising).

Conclusion

In the end we see that the perspective of women in Dahls book is not a pleasant nor by any means a positive perspective. However, it should also be noted that Dahls books are primarily works that address the distrust for the adult world. Dahls works have always insisted that the children are perhaps wiser than adults, and that they should truly examine the world around them through their own lenses, not through the lenses of those who are in authority. As such one could take another argument in regards to the feminist perspective in this particular work, perhaps arguing that the witches are nothing more than representative of controlling forces and women, such as his grandmother, symbolize the wisdom and strength of women in general in helping children fight against unjust authority.

The story of "Our Town" takes place in the early 100's. There are many important characters in this play. One of the most important persons in this play was the stage manager. He plays the part of minor characters in the play, he gives background information that is vital to the story, and he tells what happens in the future and adds opinions to the story.

First, he plays the part of minor characters in the play. When there are parts in the play that are very small, maybe only one or two lines, the stage manager takes that part and plays that person for the moment. The novel, To Kill a Mockingbird, by the American author Harper Lee, is about how society kills innocence with evil. The setting of the book takes place in the 150?s, where racism was a big deal to society. Throughout the novel, Lee uses a mockingbird as a analogy to the characters, which makes the title so convenient to the novel. If we were to view a bird?s world, blue jays would be viewed as the bullies. They are loud, territorial, and aggressive. The blue jays represent the prejudice ?bullies? in Maycomb and society. The mockingbird is a symbol for two of the characters in the novel Boo (Arthur) Radley and Tom Robinson. The mockingbird symbolizes these two character because they do not have their own songs. Whereas, the blue jay is loud and obnoxious, the mockingbird only sings other birds songs. If a mockingbird does not sing its own song, we characterize it only by what the other birds sing. We see the mockingbird through the other birds. In the novel, the people of Maycomb only know Boo Radley and Tom Robinson by what others say about them. These characters do not really have their own ?song? in a sense and are therefore, characterized by other people?s viewpoints.

Boo Radley, one of the well known symbolized mockingbirds, show how a good person can be injured by the evil of mankind. Boo a character who never steps foot outside of his house, nor maintain any relation with the people of Maycomb; causes people to fear him and make up stories about him without even getting a chance to know him. Mainly prejudice like this is what keeps Boo in his house. In the novel, Scout connects Boo with the mockingbird. Mrs. Maudie defines a mockingbird as one who ?don?t do one thing but make music for us to enjoy. They don?t eat up people?s gardens, don?t nest in corncribs, they don?t do one thing but sing their hearts out for us. Boo is exactly that. Boo is the person who put a blanket around Scout when it was cold. Boo was the one putting gifts in the tree. Boo even sewed up Jem?s pants when they were tore. Boo was the one who saved their lives. On the contrary to Scout?s primary belief, Boo never harms anyone. Scout also realizes that she wrongfully treated Boo when she thinks about the gifts in the tree. She never gave anything back to Boo, except love at the end. When Scout escorts Arthur home and stands on his front porch, she sees the same street she saw, just from an entirely different perspective. Scout learns

what a Mockingbird is, and who represents one.

Tom Robinson, one of the best examples in the novel of how innocence is destroyed by evil. Tom is a black man who, who the community of Maycomb judge him by the stereotype of black males. On his way home from work, he is often called upon by a young white girl, Mayella Ewell, to help her with her chores. Not because Mayella is white, but because Tom is genuinely and kind, he helps her with her chores. When Mayella shows her affections to Tom, he does not make any effort to physically push her away for her approaches, but instead decides to flee without harming her or Bob Ewell. Later in the story, the honest and helpful Tom is unfairly convicted of rape against Mayella Ewell. By running from the crisis that Mayella put him in, instead of staying and asserting himself, Tom gives the Ewells freedom to make whatever claims they want in court; which causes the stereotypes of black males to cloud the heads of the jury members and citizens, Tom is founded guilty for a crime he didn?t commit.

Before reading To Kill a Mockingbird, the title itself means nothing. The title is the foundation of a house. It is just a slob of cement, and cannot be interpreted. While reading the book, pieces of wood fit together and the house starts to stand up. After reading the book, the house is fully painted and decorated. The landscaping is complete, and the house is beautiful. Several things and people represent the Mockingbird throughout the novel, but Hyper Lee mainly uses Boo Radley and Tom Robinson to represent the symbolic theme. Boo is an outcast in the neighborhood, and Lee is trying to show that every neighborhood has a Boo in it. She shows how Tom is the representative of the outcast in society throughout the United States, therefore showing us that there are Tom Robinson?s in all of our neighborhoods or communities. When Atticus tells Jem and Scout that it is a sin to kill the mockingbird, this refers to the actions directed towards Tom and Boo. It was a sin to dislike Tom and Boo based on what others say about them. They were punished by the people in Maycomb because they did not have their own voice. Lee is trying to explain to her readers that there are many people without their own voice in our society. But, as it is a sin to kill the mockingbird, it is a sin to kill those without a voice. The message of the novel is to stop knocking those people down who do not have a voice. Once again, it is a sin to kill a mockingbird, which is explained in To Kill a Mockingbird. The mockingbird symbolized innocence and purity. To kill a mockingbird is to destroy that innocence.

The controversy of animal experiments has long been debated in our society (Rowan 1). Time and time again the question of whether or not scientific researchers should have the right to perform experiments on animals has been an issue. Should researchers be able to perform experiments on animals? Should researchers only be able to perform limited experiments on animals? Or should researchers not be able to perform experiments at all? These questions are argued over every day, everywhere in the world. There are many people for all sides of the debate. This is an extremely huge controversy today (Rowan 1).

Many say that animal experimentation is pointless. When it comes to animals and their rights there is a definite fine line between our needs and our taking advantage of these species we consider inferior (Posner 1). Several thousands of animals are experimented on each day; yet there have been close to no cures found. Why continue experiments on animals if there is no point to it? Scientists who are performing outdated and inaccurate tests that prove no benefit to humans or animals are wasting millions of dollars every year (Animal Experimentation). A lot of money is spent on research; however this money instead could go to hospitals, hungry people, or even the building of more schools.

Order Custom Essay on Animal Cruelty

It is said that humans and animals react differently to drugs (Animal experimentation). This is a proven fact that you cannot argue against. If one kind of

animal is repeatedly tested on with the same drug (which is practiced continuously); this will all be done for no reason. What would the purpose be? Many animals would have been killed and we would have still no cure. Moreover, scientists say it is impossible to recreate a human disease into a perfectly healthy animal (Animal Experimentation1).

One thing to keep in mind is that to invent new methods for animal experiments are being invented. Congress has recently suggested replacing animal experiments with other relevant models when available (Werner 2). Dummies could be used in exchange for animals. To this day our technology is so advanced, computers are predicted to help us in many more ways then we realize. People believe one-day computers will replace the use of animals. Cutting down on many experiments should be another definite plan, so that there is less animal suffering and less loss of lives.

Considered by many, the worst and saddest downfall to animal experimentation is the pain and suffering the animals are forced to undergo, which is unbelievable. You can compare their experiments to brutal torture. Many experiments include starvation to the death; breaking of the bones, vertebrae, and ribcage; heart puncturing, skin and fur burning; chemical injections; removing of the skin; implantation of tumors; drilling the vision. Some experiments can even get as foolish as forcing the animal to smoke tobacco

and marijuana, and even forcing the animal to take LSD. Can you imagine a human being physically forced into smoking marijuana or taking LSD, both illegal drugs?

To speak of levels of psychological moralities, researching through the experimentation of animals is a bad example of positive morals. The point where justifying morally right from wrong has been crossed with animal experimentation. Human hearts have turned cold and vicious. Human minds have mutated into finding the

easier, less guilty way out. Professional, scientific researchers have narrowed their options down to certain animals, animals that will not be difficult. Rabbits are selected to have chemicals dropped into their eyes because their eyes do not cry or water; beagle dogs are selected for their calm temperament when people harm them.

It is true that, animal experimentation can be helpful. Experimenting on animals can help scientists to discover new ways to cure diseases. But once again, you have to ask yourself, if hardly any cures are found, why continue with the endless torture and excruciating pain? Imagine a society where humans are the guinea pigs. After all, man is animal. You meet your death by starving. You may even be burned all over your body, or even get lung cancer from being forced to smoke tobacco (Animal Experimentation). Doesn't sound fun does it? When humans are exchanged for animals in research experiments, humans will not be able to be experimented on since our laws prohibit that

torture. And what about cruelty to animals? It is understood by many that animal cruelty was outlawed. To this day, animal experimentation is the worst type of animal torture one

could imagine. It is difficult to even think of what it would be like if humans were used in place of animals.

The animal rights activists believe that animals suffer as humans do and that all creatures, regardless of having a moral- reasoning capability, are entitled to freedom of torture and pain. As scientists became more advanced, the experimenting became more creative. A scientist studying for head trauma strapped an animal in machinery to receive high impact blows to the head that left the head severely damaged. Another time to examine for severe burns, pigs were restrained so that they could not escape and then burned alive with flames until flesh could be removed to examine. Was this really necessary? How does this directly benefit us?

Animals are not the only things being destroyed our environment is also destroyed. We do not stop and think about the consequences of our actions until it is already done. Pesticides and other chemicals have been damaging our land due to pollution. Not only on land but also in rivers, oceans and even our plants (Animal experimentation). If we keep this up we may not have clean water to swim in, fresh air to breath, or clean soil to grow our plants in.

Animal experimentation needs to be stopped. The endless, continuing tragedy of millions of animals dying has to stop. This has to start with someone, somewhere. As a society we need to wake up and start thinking about how we can stop the cruelty towards animals, instead of how to kill them. If it is morally wrong to kill unborn babies, why is it

not morally wrong to kill and torture poor, defenseless animals? (Cruelty Prevention) The public does not see what goes on behind closed doors. This is because product testers do

not want people to see the animal suffer and die. Once they are done with the experiment they kill the animal off as if it meant nothing. Is this how people were brought up to kill innocent creatures and not even thinking twice about what they are doing? When will this sick torment end?

There is a group called PETA (People for Ethical Treatment of Animals) that have over a hundred thousand members in it. Its one of the largest animal rights organizations in the world. The organization seeks to tell the public and educate them about the attitudes towards animals. By showing films and pictures they hope to reach many people, and show them that there are alternatives to their experimenting. PETA was founded in 1980. It was established to protect all rights of all animals. With this organization developed, cruelty towards animals has been the same. Nothing has changed. Why do people still chose to do wrong when they know perfectly well that animal experimentation is not right? What we need to do is get off the high horse and realize that we are no better than any other animal that roams the earth. We may be more powerful and smarter than most animals, but that does not give us the rights to treat them as we do in animal experiments. It is not amusing or right.

Autobiography of a Face, by Lucy Grealy, is a memoir of disquieting candor and power of a cancerous adolescent experiencing and experimenting with the repercussions of chemotherapy and the threats of a manipulating society. Grealy gives her adult years somewhat shorter shrift than they deserve, but the account of her arduous coming of age is both haunting and inspirational as she makes a lyrical statement about the complex relationships between beauty and self-worth in our humanity, about the ruthless " importance in this world of having a beautiful face." Her journey entailed a painstaking recovery from physical deterioration, through mental and intellectual maturity and growth--regarding the intrinsic impact of society's discrimination on appearance, towards a receptive, introspecting human being.

Obliviously diagnosed with Ewing's sarcoma, and staunchly put under operation after operation, bone grafts deteriorating time and time again, destroying and un-mending her jaw, Lucy initiates her thoughts quite early, saying, "I was my face I was uglinessthough sometimes unbearable, also offered a possible point of escape " (7). She quickly accepted her eccentric reflection in the mirror as nothing but a label on her inner self, and struggled between confronting her conflict and running away from it to find refuge. Strangely, the hospital became a refuge for her, despite the pain of chemotherapy. (" Pain, if nothing else, was honest and openyou new exactly what you were dealing with", indicating she was comfortable with things that she had over, a strange sense of control and stable expectation, whereas school continued to be intolerable and home was increasingly unstable). The world seemed a far scarier place than the operation table, and the jeering of strangers cut deeper incisions than a surgical knife. The hospital was the only place she didn't feel self-conscious or inferior in, and there, she tried to come to terms with her disfigurement. It was during lonesome afternoons in Intensive Care, that she came across cognitive epiphanies, even during her teen years after she believed her face to be a locus of despair and an excuse for being "unlovable". "Instead of proving my worth on the chemo table, I would become a hero through my understanding of the real beauty that exists in the worldI decided that it was my very ugliness that allowed me access to this other beauty" (150) she said, after having difficulty in understanding and disgust towards patients who were having cosmetic surgery that didn't appreciate how lucky they were to be merely healthy, let alone normal---so she demonstrated with her decision, the strive for remarkable stoicism and effort to transcend petty needs for insubstantial things like boyfriends, and attraction.

Her mother's weakness to confront disconcerting and painful situations like illness, permeated its way through Lucy's mind , during her later years, when she not only suppressed tears during chemotherapy, but ,also, natural desires of every teenage girl the desire to be pretty. Her sister was going through puberty and there were times when, she couldn't help but wish for an aesthetic face, only to quickly respond to her envious reaction with, " My face was my face, and it was stupid to wish it any other way" ( 140), bluntly illustrating her, self-enforcing a burly façade as a defense mechanism. This improved her skills in detaching herself from her desires, lowering her expectations, and hence, decreasing any disappointment that would follow. It also protected whatever ounce of surfaced dignity that remained when not distrustfully reminded by a mirror. However, repressing had its toll, and the more she negated her feelings, "the more they crowded in", and spiraled into a vapid, self-destructive and loathing cycle. This ultimately separated herself from people whom she thought never have experienced the depth of " bottomless grief". (Ugliness). Her life was put on pause because of the reverberations of suppressed jealousy. A 'pause' meant, an indifference towards surrounding, a form of seclusion, and she believed being beautiful was to live with just the opposite sensations of life, " without the great burden of isolation, which is what feeling ugly felt like" ( 177). This feeling produced a deeper one of confinement, and extrication from society and the communitygetting a job wasn't something she was up for because her face posed as more of a problem than her rsum. Her isolation and image only served as an underpinning to the definition of her " self", which only assisted her drowning self-esteem. Her obsession with the disadvantages of her looks eventually took a deeper dive into an aura of guilt " I wasn't worthy of being looked at….my ugliness was equal to a great failure" (185), and thus a person with that intensity of shame, definitively would develop deeper tendencies to either thrive, or die, in the world of the introverted.

Lucy, plunged into the pools of thriving and dying when it came to the consequences of living in one's own head. Her fate and faith increased now and then, as illustrated when she stated, " I considered the desire to have my body develop into a woman's body a weakness, a straying from my chosen path of truth…as I lay in bed at night I considered by powers my heightened sense of self-awareness, feeling not as if I had chosen this bath but that It had be chosen for me" (151). Her gender role and development was warped through society's critiquing which soon became mainly her own constant critiquing. The function of beauty, as society portrayed to women was to obtain the norm of love, attraction, and need. Her void being just that, a healthy social life was out of the question, even when she attended the University of Iowa and shamefully surfed through transient partners to obtain the missing construct of loving and belonging. (That she rarely received from her alienating family). That, along with random taunts in the streets from strangers, solidified all feelings of anomaly---as a woman, a member of society, a partner, and an individual.

Lucy spent her entire lifetime searching for self acceptance through other people's acceptance, ignoring the reality of her true conflict clarifying her identity as something apart from her face and the extrinsic world. She managed to become very self-actualized, and wise, it being an obvious auspice when she realizes the greatest ignored realities of such things as pain early on her life--- "Anxiety and anticipation, I was to learn are the essential ingredients in suffering from pain, as opposed to feeling pain pure and simple"(16). She used intelligence to anchor herself superior to all that had hurt her in the past, and to all that continuously intimidates every imperfect person in today's society. The negative but typical role of society in her life would have been (and was for a few years), to obliterate her mental image and composure, but she promoted her ends by intuitive self-counseling, worldly exploration of human life, and surpassed universal truths. All forms of pain and anger, both emotional and physical, eventually found healthy expression through creative observing and writingand she first found this gateway of escape in college as she notes, "Language itself, words, and images, could be wrought and shaped into vessels for the truth and beauty I had so long hungered for" (1). Writing represented her first sense of control over a creation pertaining to something appealing and beautiful. (As opposed to, for example, makeup). Through developing a full sense of self-definition, she enhanced mental aptitude and strength to retain equanimity while living in a judgmental, unforgiving world, and blessed herself with her own forgiveness, and liberation of genuine quality; Never again to feel or face the threat of a shallow, indecent, expecting society.
