Blade Runner as a Postmodernist Film

Postmodernism is a term that is difficult to pin down but it used more and more widely to describe aspects of the culture of the last three decades. One of the main features is its eclecticism the mixing and matching of different stylistic elements. Some who use the term welcome it as liberation from the ideas of and reverence for "high culture" (for example, opera, ballet, painting, classic literature, etc) and the disparaging of "low culture" (television, popular cinema, comics, etc). Others see postmodernism as a trivialisation of culture by irresponsible academics caught up in admiration for the glitter of consumer capitalism and its moral emptiness.

Postmodernism describes conditions prevailing in the last three decades of the twentieth century, especially in the production of media artefacts, where there is a superabundance of images and styles in television, pop videos, film, advertising, etc - which are readily available for recycling. The traditionally valued qualities of coherence, meaning, originality and authenticity are replaced by a random swirl of empty signs to produce a culture of disposable imitations, superficiality, "simulacra" (copies without originals), style valued over substance, surface appearance over depth, a mixing and matching of diverse styles.

Another aspect of postmodernism arises from the view that it is no longer possible to have general theories of how humanity and society function, called "grand narratives" or "metanarratives" - theories which attempt to explain how history and society functions (such as Marxism which explains historical development in terms of the class struggle).

One way of approaching postmodernism is to see it as an attempt to deal with the breakdown in the way we look at things which have come about in recent years with the advances in information and communications technology. In previous eras it would take a considerable time for ideas to circulate. With email it is possible to send messages to anywhere in the globe in seconds; you can read a web version of a newspaper from anywhere in the world on the internet on the day of publication. There is therefore an overwhelming amount of information available to us. This, according to some, must have a profound effect on the very way we think.

The main stylistic features of postmodernism might be summed up as follows

· Depthlessness a concern for surface appearance, style over substance. This involves a playful attitude towards cultural artefacts

· Hybridity - an eclectic mixing of styles from different times and places, recycling of images, mixing and matching, intertextual references, the transformation of found materials into a new text (called "bricolage")

· Intertextuality, referencing not just different genres but the way in which specific texts are "quoted" in other texts. (Think of the way that television advertisements where incidentally Blade Runner director Ridley Scott learned his trade often refer to films, television shows and even other adverts.

· Intertextuality often involves another feature of postmodern texts how the same text can be appreciated in different ways by different audiences the mainstream audience which reads the film in a straightforward way and the "cineliterate" (or "smart" or film buff ) audience which recognises the intertextual references.

Despite its underlying seriousness of tone, Blade Runner has several features which would allow us to consider it a postmodern text.

· The replicants are "copies without originals" ("simulacra")

· There is an eclectic mixture of styles in the set design, props, clothing etc. 140s film noir styles (both Rachel and Deckard) coexist with punk (Pris), sixties fashion (Zhora) and Hari Krishna. Bryant is the embodiment of the corrupt policemen in film noir and crime film for the last five decades. The language of the street, "cityspeak", is an amalgam of Japanese, Chinese, Spanish and German. There are diverse architectural styles giant futuristic buildings resembling Mayan pyramids with microchip exteriors, modern-day downtown LA with New York.

A good example of postmodernist style in Blade Runner is the scene where Deckard runs after Zhora through the city streets at night. She is wearing fashion from "swinging sixties" Londona see-through raincoat he wears a 140s trenchcoat. The streets are teeming with a diverse population of punk rockers, chanting hari krishna followers, people in 10s military uniforms, and in oriental headgear; there are Catholic nuns in extravagant headwear that was no longer worn by the 160s. Passers-by are carrying familiar-looking umbrellas but with neon handles. In the background are neon advertising blimps for familiar brand-names such as Atari and Budweisser. On the streets there are cars and buses. This cornucopia of diverse and eclectic images is shown against an equally eclectic soundtrack. These combined images and sounds express the chaos of modern urban living as much as anticipating what life in the future will be like.

The film's intertextual reference is not limited to its generic hybridity. It "quotes" other texts. As Rick Instrell puts it

Post-modernism has a self-conscious fascination with style, with mixing different genres; it frequently uses parody and pastiche … But whereas parody tends to poke fun at the style it is imitating, often in order to satirise it, pastiche tends to imitate in order to flatter the style it is imitating. Pastiche, in particular, is a central feature in the surface or depthless nature of post-modern texts. Images refer only to themselves or other pre-existent images rather than any realities in the world outside. In Blade Runner, examples of this abound. Deckard traces Zhora the replicant snake charmer to a nightclub, affecting a slightly effeminate voice to disguise his real intent. This is surely a direct reference to the scene where private eye Philip Marlowe (Humphrey Bogart) visits the Geiger bookstore in the 146 classic The Big Sleep. There is no sense of parody in the playing of the scene, however. The reference is merely available to you provided you are familiar with The Big Sleep.

This tendency to "quote" from other texts is typical of the modern advertising industry where Ridley Scott developed his skills.

Toni Collette is phenomenal as Muriel, an unattractive, emotionally repressed young woman whose life revolves around Abba and getting married. She lives in Porpoise Spit with her severely dysfunctional family when she decides to leave and pursue her dream. Marriage represents the ultimate success and happiness, but through the course of the film we see Muriel profoundly mature from a naive introvert into a strong woman, shaking off her need for marriage as a form of acceptance.

Toni Collette stars as Muriel, a social outcast who dreams of getting married. Unfortunately, no one has ever wanted to date Muriel, let alone marry her. One day she hears about a foreign swimming sensation in danger of deportation back to his home country unless he can find a wife. Muriel signs up for this duty and prepares herself for the day she has wanted for her entire life to arrive. Collette gives a decent, goofy performance as Muriel, and the soundtrack is comprised of ABBA songs, giving the film a light, fluffy feel.

Dr. Faustus as a Christian Play

Dr. Faustus can be viewed as a Christian play for many reasons. Many thought of this play as a morality play. A morality play is the "conflict of the personified human soul with sin amid contending vices and virtues, and ends in one of two ways, triumph or damnation" (Sunayana, Dr. Faustus). This definition explains the story of Dr. Faustus. Throughout the entire play, one can pick out many Christian-like aspects.

One aspect is the conflict between good and evil. Throughout the play, the decision between good and evil arises again and again. For example, Dr. Faustus has a choice between remaining faithful to God or gaining power. He would have power for 4 years, but then he has to give his soul up to hell. Making choices in favor of the good side means that Dr. Faustus would have to remain normal like every other person. He already has many accomplishes, but he is not satisfied. Making choices in favor of the bad side means that Dr. Faustus would have more power for 4 years, but after that he would have nothing but torture. Dr. Faustus makes many choices between good or evil and heaven or hell.

One might relate Dr. Faustus to the story of Adam and Eve. Adam and Eve were told not to eat off of the tree. They did not listen and as a consequence their pleasures were taken away from them. Dr. Faustus had wealth and popularity. He wanted more than that and as a consequence he would have eternity for torture. Both would not accept what they already had. They both wanted more than they had and would not listen. Both Adam and Eve and Dr Faustus had a wonderful life, but they took more and were punished for their decision to do so.

Write my Essay on Dr. Faustus as a Christian Play cheap

Another aspect that relates to Christianity is the setting of the play. The setting of the play is between the heaven, the hell, and the earth. Just as in the Christian religion, the heaven, the hell, and the earth are the three main places one life and morals are made up. In the Christian religion, how one acts on Earth determines where they will rest for eternity. In the same respect, Dr. Faustus did not believe in the heaven, the hell, or the after life. He also did not believe he could repent his sins. He was told to talk to God and repent his sins. He did not think it would work. His actions and thoughts led him to his damnation.

One of the main parts of the play is the seven deadly sins. The seven deadly sins played a big part in the play. The seven deadly sins consisted of pride, covetousness, wrath, envy, gluttony, sloth, and lust.__________ Pride is the first sin. Dr. Faustus's flaw is his pride. Although he has had a lucky successful life, his pride makes him KNOW he can do more. He is very competitive, and he is not satisfied with anything. He is a very intelligent man and has a good life, but he is not satisfied. Covetousness is the second sin. He shows covetousness by wanting a wife. Wrath is third sin. Wrath is showed by Dr. Faustus's impatience. Dr. Faustus shows his impatience through people he interacts with in the play. For example, he gives Benvolio horns and he silences them. Envy is the fourth sin. Envy is also showed throughout the play. Dr. Faustus envied people with power. Although he had power in his profession, it was not enough. He had to know more and learn more. He wanted to pass every other person in his or her knowledge and power. He had envy for people who could do more than he could. Gluttony is the fifth sin. Gluttony is also well known in this play. He shows this by wanting to use the dark arts. He was well known without moving to the dark arts, but this was the next step out of the knowledge he already attained. He was a well-educated man, but that was not good enough for him. He did not want what every other normal person on the earth had. He wanted more and better pleasures. In his eyes, he wanted power and pleasures equal to God. Sloth is the sixth sin. Especially at the end, sloth is shown in the play. He has a chance to repent his sins but he didn't. He did not think he was able to. Lust is the seventh sin. Lust is the sin of self-control and greed. In my opinion, greed is Dr. Faustus's middle name. Greed is shown throughout the entire play. Although someone would give up everything they owned to have the life Dr. Faustus had, he was not happy with all of the accomplishes he had. He wants more knowledge than any other normal person has. He wants to be equal with God's power. If he realized the wealth and accomplishes he already had in the beginning of his quest for knowledge, then he would have never been in the situation he was in. He should have accepted what he already had, but he was greedy, and he was punished for his greed. (Pink Monkey, Dr. Faustus)

Another aspect one may find in the play is the good and the bad angels. One may recognize this as the angels that sit on a person's shoulders. People are brought up to recognize these as their conscience. The good angel sits on one shoulder and tries to persuade the person to do good things. The bad angel sits on the other shoulder and tries to persuade the person to do the bad thing. Dr. Faustus has these angels with him in the play. The angels might be telling the audience was Dr. Faustus is thinking on the inside. The good angel represents heaven and God. The bad angel represents hell and eternity of torture. Dr. Faustus wants to have many more pleasures than a normal person, and he wants to have knowledge and power of a superior. The bad angel uses this to persuade him. He tells Dr. Faustus about all the wealth and power he will have. When he hears this, he ignores the good angel.

Some of the Christian aspects jump out at the reader, while others the reader must look for. There are many aspects in this play that resembles a Christian play. In my opinion, I would relate this story to a Christian play because it has mane components that a Christian play also would have.

My mother told me to always look on the bright side. I heard through the grapevine that the boss is about to abandon ship. Someone else in the department is airing dirty laundry in an attempt to get the boss's job. Who, is the question of the day. John is a good guy but is all talk and no action. There has always been bad blood between Mike and me, but with his back against the wall would he become a back stabber? Stephanie has always been the belle of the ball, everyone likes her. Eric is bigger than life and always has a smile for everyone. He cares more about his bike than his job. But it is better to be safe than sorry, they should both be watched. Keith is the brown noser of brown nosers, he would say anything to get ahead as long as he didn't get caught with his hand in the cookie jar. Maybe if I dangle a carrot in front of Brad he would tell all. He usually knows where the skeletons are buried. Bill is always full of himself, but he isn't really a glutton for punishment, I don't think he wants that job. The funny thing is that they all think that I am jockeying for the job, but the grass is always greener on the other side, and I am happy where I am. Richard seems to be grasping at straws, trying to draw attention away from his past mistakes. Aaron is the one who deserves the position, but he's something of a loose canon and doesn't really play well with others. Susan is madder than a hatter and couldn't be trusted with anything more stressful than her current position. Richard is lower than a snake's belly, he could be burning some bridges to get ahead. Roy had some success with his last project and has been milking that for all it's worth, hoping that it would lead to something like this. There is more to Dan than meets the eye, he always seems like a glass is half full kind of guy. Steve is slow as molasses in January, everything would come to a halt with him at the wheel. Jeff likes to toot his own horn, he isn't the type to rat on someone else. Brett likes to think of himself as the top banana, but he would need to turn over a new leaf to do this job. Oh well, another day another dollar. To be honest with you, we would be lucky if it is someone from the outside.

At the beginning of the novel, Great Expectations, Pip was a young kid who did not know how to read the names on his parent's tombstones. He was scared by a convict and believed that he would eat his liver if he did not do certain favors for himretrieve food and a file. In the end, Pip is a grown man, and has matured a lot over the course of the novel. He started off poor, and then he received a vast sum of money from a benefactor. When Pip first met Estella he was a young boy who was intimated by her, but by the end of the book they are friends. Even though many of Pip's characteristic's changed overtime some stayed with him nightmares, feeling of guilt and innocence, and love for Estella.

When Pip is young he does not know much about the world. He cannot read or write. The first scene of the book, Pip is in the graveyard looking at his mother and father's tombstones and he cannot read the words that appear on them. The first feature that Pip had when he was young, and that he continues to have in his older years are nightmares. When Pip sees the man in the pub that aims in invincible gun at him, and then stirs a drink with the file Pip gave Magwitch, Pip is frightened and has a nightmare of this occurrence. He narrates

I had sadly broken sleep when I got to bed, through the thinking of the strange man taking aim at me with his invisible gun, and of the guiltily coarse and common thing it was, to be on secret terms with convicts…I was haunted by the file too. A dread possessed me that when I least expected it, the file would reappear. I coaxed myself to sleep by thinking of Miss Havisham's, next Wednesday; and in my sleep I saw the file coming at me out of a door, without seeing who held it, and I screamed myself awake. (7)

This shows that Pip is scared by the man and the file, who pointed the invisible gun at him. He also thought he was going to get in trouble with the law for helping a convict. Pip still feels this way towards the end of the novel. After Miss Havisham burnt in the fire, and Pip burnt as well, from saving her, he had a nightmare of Miss Havisham running at him. Pip says, "If I dozed off for a minute, I was awakened by Miss Havisham's cries, and by her running at me with all that height of fire above her head" (404). This conveys that Pip was having nightmares of the incident just like he had nightmares when he was a young boy. So, Pip never changed and he continues to have nightmares even when he is older. Another thing similar to Pip having nightmares is that he sees the white ghost, which is Miss. Havisham. He sees this ghost the first time he leaves Miss Havisham's house. Pip says

Write my Essay on Pip's Unchanged Characteristic's in Great Expectations

And I saw a figure hanging there by the neck. A figure all in yellow white, with but one shoe to the feet; and it hung so, that I could see that the faded trimmings of the dress were like earthy paper, and that the face was Miss Havisham's, with a movement going over the whole countenance as if she was trying to call me. (64)

This is when Pip was younger but he also sees her again when he goes back to visit her before she is burned. Pip articulates, "A childish association revived with wonderful force in the moment of the slight action, and I fancied that I saw Miss Havisham hanging to the beam" (401). So even though Pip has changed some much this childhood, innocent, image is still with him and he has not forgotten about it.

Throughout the novel Pip is guilty and innocent. When Pip helps his convict, Magwitch, by sneaking him a file and food Pip feels extremely guilty. Page 17 shows how Pip is guilty. This incident is before the convict is caught; Pip is imagining that everyone is out to get him and that they are chasing him because he stole the pie. When the convict is caught and Pip is there with the search party, Pip feels guilty that he does not receive and punishment because the convict gets him out of it. After they catch Magwitch, Pip feels as if he should get in trouble for helping a convict. Nothing happens to Pip so he feels a feeling of guilt. Pip is also scared that Joe will eventually find out what is happening to him

That, if Joe knew it, and at any subsequent period of our joint domestic life remarked that his beer was flat or thick, the conviction that he suspected Tar in it, would bring a rush of blood to my face. In a word, I was too cowardly to do what I knew be right, as I had been too cowardly to avoid doing what I knew to be wrong. (41)

This shows that Pip does not want Joe to find out what he did, but in a way he does too. He is scared of both possibilities because he is extremely guilty because he is not in trouble, and at the same time he does not want Mrs. Joe and Joe to find out because Mrs. Joe will probably smack him. Pip's social class changes after Pip receives a large sum of money from a secret benefactor. Pip believes that he is better than Joe and everyone else from Kent. Joe visits Pip in London and Joe gives Pip a long speech how Joe and London don't work together and it's not where Joe belongs. Joe leaves and Pip says to himself

The fashion of his dress could no more come in its way when he spoke these words, than it could come in its way in Heaven. He touched me gently on the forehead, and went on. As soon as I could recover myself sufficiently, I hurried out after him and looked for him in the neighbouring streets; but he was gone. (4-5)

After Joe gives his speech Pip is emotionally upset and he is stuck on what to do. Joe was one of his best friends and now they are not anymore because Pip left him and forgot about him.

When Pip sees Estella for the first time he is stunned by her elegant beauty. When Pip meets her for the first time he is in love. He feels so bad and embarrassed when Estella ridicules him. At the end of chapter 8, Pip says, "I was a common labouring-boy; that my hands were coarse, that my boots were thick; that I had fallen into despicable habit of calling knaves Jacks" (65). Pip's love for Estella continues throughout the novel. Pip draws his own conclusion that Miss Havisham is his secret benefactor and that she is because she wants him and Estella to get married. This conclusion is wrong and Pip finds this out later. Pip goes to Estella and Miss Havisham and professes his love to her. Pip and Estella strike up a conversation about Drummle the man Estella has been with and Pip says, "You would never marry him, Estella?" (6). Estella replies, "Why not tell you the truth? I am going to be married to him" (6). As we have talked about in class, this is the climax of the novel because this is when Pips heart breaks. He still has love for Estella the rest of the novel, and Estella and Pip meet up again in the last chapter of Great Expectationsit has been eleven years. Estella and Drummle's marriage did not work out and Drummel died. In the end, Pip and Estella walk of hand in hand just as friends.

The three traits I have explained to you are all closely related. Some of the incidents in the story can be thought of as depicting Pip's nightmares, guilt or innocence, and love for Estella. These the traits of Pip's character show us that he really never changed when he received the money. His social class changed, but he never grew up to become and adult because he was always given money, and never really earned it by himself. I think that after Magwitch's death Pip became more of a man because then he had to make a living on his own. Because Pip always kept these three traits I think that it means that Pip always had a part of Kent in his heart, and he never forgot about it even though it seemed he did.

What happens when too much carbon dioxide gets omitted into the Earth's atmosphere? The condition known as Global Warming occurs. Global Warming is the rising of the Earth's surface temperature due to chemicals in the atmosphere. Global Warming has many threats on the climate and even the health of the people on this planet. Some of these threats include the altering of crop seasons and even effect the way organisms survive on the planet. The first thing I think I should discuss when talking about global warming is what causes it to occur. Gases such as carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide, which are known as greenhouse gases, all build up in the atmosphere of the earth. All these gases make it so that it becomes harder for the radiation that the sun shines into the atmosphere to escape. The heat continues to build up and this is what causes the temperatures to increase. I know this seems like the temperatures increase massively but in the last hundred years the average temperature of the Earth has gone up between 0.8 and 1.0 degrees farenheight. Also in the last fifteen years, we have had the ten warmest years in record. Global Warming also helps the Earth and it has been for many years. Without global warming, the Earth's temperature would be a lot lower than the 60-degree average. Unfortunately due to there being many more harmful "greenhouse gases" being placed into the atmosphere, instead of the temperature staying at a constant, its rising. What are many of the dangers of the Earth's temperature rising? First of all it cause many of the glaciers that are floating in the Arctic and Greenland to melt. This in turn causes the sea levels to rise around the world. In the last hundred years alone the seas around the planet have risen anywhere from four to ten inches. I know it does not sound like a massive change but being able to raise all the seas in the world a whole ten inches is a huge problem. Sea levels also continue to rise is because the hotter temperature cause the ocean water to expand. An example of the sea level causing problems could happen on a little Native Island in the middle of an Ocean. On these islands usually where native tribes live, if the sea level rises three fourths of a meter then half of the island will sink. This could happen in many different islands around the world and if the water keeps on rising as it is, then farming land near the seashores will be flooded and the crops will be destroyed and many farmers will be left without much to live off of. The melting of the glaciers are also causing some problems in the Himalayas. Many of the tips of the mountain's in that area. Massive flooding and rivers that are well above their normal levels are threatening the crops and homes in the area. Many of the locals that live in the area and many of the scientists that are surveying the area are saying that the glaciers are melting at a phenomenal rate. Another danger that comes with the changing of the climate is that the increased heat causes more evaporation to occur in the hotter climates. This causes there to be more precipitation in many other climates that are not used to handling massive rainfalls. The increased rainfall also leads to speeding up the process of the sea levels rising. Health is also something that becomes threatened because of global warming. Heat becomes a huge factor in the health of humans, especially the elderly. Incidents such as heat stroke head exhaustion and diseases increase drastically. The heat makes it possible for mosquitoes and other insects to transmit diseases. This is something that happened in New York during this summer. A very rare disease called St. Louis Emphyitis (spelling?) that would spread in puddles of water that mosquitoes would drink out of due to the heat. These mosquitoes would then bite humans and infect them with this disease. I don't recall how many people, if any died due to this, but it did cause a bit of a panic in the New York Metropolitan area. Heat is not the only weather problem. Global Warming doesnt only increase temperatures in hot areas. It also decreases temperatures in cold areas. An example of this has been the cold spell that struck the Midwest. In Montana, temperatures plummeted to 0 degrees below and stayed there. The coldest weather ever recorded plagued our countrys heart for over three weeks and still hasnt returned too normal. A related incident has been the blizzards of the East Coast. Some places in New York State got over twenty feet of snow. So what is in store for Earth in the future? Possible nothing. There are many people that believe global warming is nothing more than the normal rise of temperature around the world. So if this is the case, we have nothing to really worry about. Unfortunately, this scenario of normal raise in temperature might not be the case. If it isn't, Scientists estimate that the global temperature will rise between five and nine degrees by the middle of the 1st century accompanied by a sea-level rise of one to four feet. Once the temperature reaches a certain threshold, the polar ice caps will began to melt. While those living in the Arctic may find that a nice surprise, the implications for the rest of the world are serious. Even a partial melting of the polar ice caps will cause sea levels to rise so much as to completely wipe out most coastal cities. This includes such big cities such as San Francisco and New York. Those cities that are not totally wiped out by the water will eventually be hit with hurricanes much more severe than any other one in history. Of course, inland cities are not safe either. Rather than surging seawaters and hurricanes, they will face drought. So what can be done in order to keep from all of that from happening? We need to stop putting so much pollution in to the air. No matter what there will always be a little bit of Carbon Dioxide omitted into the atmosphere. If we could just limit all the coal and fossil fuels that we burn, there will not be so much "greenhouse gases" and it would keep all of that from happening so quickly. There have also been many attempts by the United States Presidents Administrations in order to help slow down the effect. In my lifetime I know that I won't see anything too drastic happen due to global warming, but there is a chance that my children and grandchildren will. Hopefully they wont.
